529. Does a party have to be united to stay elected?
I feel one of the old myths reappearing in the political debate. Some are out and about saying that the Conservative party has to be more united to stay elected. They clearly remember no political history.Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair were both very successful Prime Ministers when it came to winning elections. Both won three in a row with large majorities. Both led divided parties, with very visible splits. Margaret Thatcher faced continuous opposition especially in the early years and at the end, from the so called “wets”, senior politicians including Cabinet members who thought her economic policy was wrong. They regularly briefed the press against her. There were occasional resignations and vocal opposition in the Commons from backbench sympathisers of the rebels.

530. How Australia surrendered to the wowsers – Telegraph Blogs
Today is ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand. It seems an appropriate time to reflect on what Australia was and what it has become.I said the other day what a marvellous achievement it was, the way those early generations of Aussies turned a relentless hell into a fair approximation of paradise on earth. What I see now, however, is a fair proportion of the current generation doing their damnedest to reverse the process.

531. What roads policy would you like?
Starting today I am producing a series of pieces which invites bloggers to send in their ideas on what should be on offer in a Manifesto for May 2015 in various areas.Let us begin with roads. The Labour years saw little roadbuilding, followed by substantial further cuts in capital as their response to the financial crisis at the end of their period in government. The Coalition lived with most of those cuts for the first half of this Parliament, but is now relaxing the controls on capital expenditure.

Britain's biggest banks would be broken up by law under a Labour government, Ed Miliband has warned as he unveiled a raft of ideas which he says are needed to stop consumers being ripped off by big business. As the Labour conference begins in Manchester today, Mr Miliband threatened to forcibly ring fence high street banks from their high-risk investment arms if they fail to go further and faster with reforms designed to prevent a repeat of the 2007 crash. While Labour is ahead in the polls, Mr Miliband's personal ratings still lag behind those of David Cameron.

535. Palin slams loyal to Obama Sen. Begich with epic Thatcher quote, his own record...
Really, Mark? Really?Margaret Thatcher used to say, “I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.” So, thank you, Mark Begich, for making me and others exceptionally cheery today! Mark, after looking at your voting record I can see why you are looking for a distraction. You have voted FOR Obamacare, FOR massive tax increases, FOR carbon taxes which could cost Alaskans 21,000 jobs, AGAINST pro-life legislation, and there’s so much more. You even flip-flopped to oppose the nation’s balanced budget amendment. You agree with, and vote with, ultra-liberal Senators Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid approximately 90% of the time. Mark, you recently said, “Alaskans pick who they want based on what’s good for Alaska.” Couldn’t agree more, Mark, which is why many hope to see great changes for our great state following the upcoming 2014 election.

Finland is about to embark on a fascinating economic experiment that could change everything about the way we see welfare, benefits, and cash transfers to the poor. In 2017, Finland will introduce a type of universal basic income scheme, in which most of the country's welfare state will be abolished and replaced with a single €800 (£579, $879) per month stipend, payable to all Finns, regardless of their income, tax-free.

541. Fewer people are going hungry than under Labour | Conservative Home
The Labour Party talk a lot about the increase in the number of Foodbanks stressing that as proof that under the Conservative-led Government the poor have got poorer. Usually there is a some further implication that this is because the Conservatives don’t care – or are actively antagonistic towards the poor. The alternative explanation – that the need was always there but that more of it is being met as more foodbanks have opened is dismissed.

542. Centre for Social Justice joins the fray over child benefit - Daily Express
"Ditching child benefit for households with a higher-rate taxpayer could trigger a wave of family breakdowns, a think tank warned last night. The Centre for Social Justice said the Government’s “faulty and unthinking” proposals could stop parents getting married or even living together, eroding “the stable foundation two-parent families provide within society”. The centre, which has close links to Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, fears the change will encourage parents to claim falsely that they live alone."

The public has been misled, mostly by Labour politicians, into believing that the public spending crisis is the fault of the banks. The reality is that from 2001, the Labour Government borrowed and spent too much, and also relied upon massive tax income from the financial sector at “the top of the froth”.
