484. What has happened to deregulation?
One of the promises of Conservatives in Opposition was to remove needless or burdensome regulations, to allow more people to set up and grow businesses.Such general promises are always popular, and many in business feel they do have to spend too much time and money on compliance with regulations which do not help them be safer, better or more honest.I drew up a set of policies before the 2001 election as Shadow DTI Secretary. I did it again for Michael Howard as his Shadow Deregulation Secretary, a post created to stress the importance of the task by giving it a seperate voice around the table. I did it again for David Cameron as part of the Economic Policy Review. Indeed, that single chapter swamped much else in the report, as the media thought it more interesting than the advice on general economic policy, transport, education and training, energy or pensions.

485. The case against Europe: Doomsayers wail that a euro break-up would trigger Armageddon. That's what they said about us leaving the ERM, but it sparked an economic boom | Daily Mail
DANIEL HANNAN: Every new bailout is hailed as the end of the crisis. Every one fails, leaving the markets as sceptical as before.Over 13 years as an MEP, Daniel Hannan has witnessed first-hand how Brussels works. Now he has written a forensic analysis of why it’s rotten to the core. Yesterday, in part one of our exclusive serialisation, he laid bare the EU’s utter contempt for democracy. Today, he examines the rise — and imminent fall — of the euro . . .How did so many clever people get it so wrong? The flaws in the euro project were visible at the outset. It was never going to be possible to jam widely divergent economies into a single monetary policy.Yet, in every national parliament, in every central bank, in every university faculty, in every BBC editorial conference, there was a collective suspension of disbelief. Why? What were supporters of the single currency thinking?

486. The Left hates Margaret Thatcher because she reminds them they are wrong about everything | Daily Mail
Now and again, we are reminded of the sheer nastiness of a certain kind of Leftie. Not, let me stress, all Lefties: I have Labour friends who are motivated by a more or less uncomplicated desire to help the disadvantaged. But they march alongside some committed haters who define their politics not by what they like, but by what they loathe. They also define opponents not as human beings with whom they disagree, but as legitimate targets.A lack of empathy, bordering almost on sociopathy sits behind their talk of caring and sharing. On sale at the TUC Conference, before a storm of protest forced their withdrawal, were T-shirts glorying in the eventual death of Margaret Thatcher.‘A generation of trade unionists will dance on Thatcher’s grave,’ says one, emblazoned with the image of her tombstone.Another is wrapped in a bag printed with the words: ‘In the event of Thatcher’s death, open bag and wear T-shirt immediately.’ The T-shirt has a picture of the former prime minister’s Spitting Image puppet, with the slogan: ‘Hey ho the witch is dead.’Unbelievably, the ‘unemployed’ workers who produced them are taxpayer-funded.Stop and think for a moment about what these T-shirts are celebrating.Lady Thatcher is a frail and elderly grandmother. Yes, she was a strong-willed, divisive politician — and thank heaven she was.A more conciliatory figure would almost certainly not have made the changes necessary to rescue Britain from the mess we were in by the late Seventies.

487. The REAL scandal of White Dee: It's not just her brazen milking of benefits, but the system that makes it a more rational choice than working
Pay people to be poor, observed the American economist Art Laffer, and you’ll never run out of poor people. He was talking about the welfare trap: the way in which, if a country gets its benefits rules wrong, people will rationally choose to live on the dole rather than take low-paid jobs.White Dee, the star — if that’s the right word — of Channel 4’s thought-provoking documentary Benefits Street, has attracted renewed criticism for continuing to claim handouts while receiving appearance fees as a result of her notoriety.

491. Labour wants to introduce the one policy guaranteed to make the housing crisis worse | City A.M.
The UK's housing crisis is no secret, and political solutions are offered two a penny.Unfortunately, Ed Miliband's plan to limit rents is perhaps the one thing that can be relied upon to make the situation worse for Britain's renters. At the launch of Labour's election campaign in Redbridge, Miliband is expected to say that "the next Labour government will legislate to make three year tenancies the standard in the British private rented sector".These tenancies, Miliband is set to say, "will limit the amount that rents can rise by each year too - so landlords know what they can expect each year and tenants can’t be surprised by rents that go through the roof."Like any price ceiling, Labour's pledge will reduce available supply, if rents are capped below their market level. Economists call such policies rent controls, and they are a rare area of consensus among academics.

495. Tories, Tea Partiers, Nazis: Chris Huhne lashes out at the forces of evil – Telegraph...
When he lays into the 'Tory Tea Party tendency', I'm guessing that Chris Huhne means me. I am, as far as I know, the only elected Conservative actually to have organised a Tea Party – that is, an anti-tax rally (see here). Not that the Environment Secretary seems to have our views about tax in mind. Rather, he is using 'Tea Partiers' in the sense that most British Lefties do, to mean 'horrid people'. The Environment Secretary usually claims that his opponents are like Nazis. This time, though, he's taking off the gloves. Never mind Adolf Hitler; these Right-wing Tories are like… like… Sarah Palin!

496. How the Government could cut spending by over Ł10 billion without reneging on its policies The...
A big thank you to Andrew Haldenby of Reform, Ruth Porter of the IEA, Chris Nicholson of Centre Forum, Matthew Sinclair of the Taxpayers Alliance and Neil O'Brien of Policy Exchange for participating in our ThinkTankCentral series last week on how George Osborne could cut the growth of public spending further and faster in the budget.I reckon that at a very rough estimate their ideas stacked up to some Ł50 billion - getting on for a tenth of all public spending. Admittedly, some contributors' ideas overlapped and some calcultated savings differently. As I read and edited them each day, I tended to divide them up in my mind into four categories.
