369. Tobacco Smuggling Reaches Epidemic Proportions as Lawmakers Seek to Challenge Criminal Activity
New York City is currently seeing an epidemic of bootleg tobacco as a result of high taxes on cigarettes. The situation is similar to other areas of the world, where criminal gangs are finding themselves by selling cheaper tobacco to people who cannot afford the higher prices of legitimate cigarettes.

370. Why Britain and U.S. Should Pursue a U.S.-UK Free Trade Area
A referendum on British membership in the European Union is scheduled for 2017. EU supporters argue that exit from the EU would hurt Britain’s economy and, in particular, its ability to negotiate trading arrangements with the rest of the world—a responsibility currently exercised by the EU on behalf of all of its member states. But there is every reason to believe that Britain, the world’s sixth-largest economy, would be able to negotiate trade agreements independently. If Britain does decide to leave the EU, one of its central priorities should be to negotiate a modern free trade area (FTA), based on sovereignty and freedom, with the United States. This is a goal that the U.S., which should abandon its policy of supporting the EU at the expense of the sovereignty of its member nations, should also champion.

371. Ken Livingstone charged Londoners £260 for shoes via Mayor's credit card | Local Government
Ken Livingstone has been grossly hypocritical over tax avoidance and is under investigation to see if he has broken the rules. He says journalists haven't asked his accountant any questions about it but he hasn't released his accountant's name. But I think a story broken by the Mail on Sunday this morning into his expense claims when Mayor of London from 2000 to 2008 represents a far worse scandal.

372. How 'man of the people' Ken enjoyed lifestyle of a jet-setting executive - all on the taxpayer...
Ken Livingstone spent tens of thousands of pounds of public money as London Mayor on first class air travel, luxury hotels, fine wines and even a £260 pair of shoes.Documents show that among a string of expenses claims he used a special Mayor’s credit card to pay for a £282 dinner with Ed Balls, then a Labour Minister, at a top London restaurant. Afterwards he dipped into public funds to pay for his £30 taxi home.Mr Livingstone spent £135.94 on a desk lamp, £41.25 on a shirt, £42 for an ‘emergency passport’, and £23.87 on water at a Paris hotel overlooking the Eiffel Tower. He bought fine wines from upmarket supplier Laithwaites, including four cases of Rioja Luis Canas Reserva 2001 (£475); two cases of Corneau Cyllene Pouilly Fumé 2005 (£199); three cases of Rovalley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (£299); and six half bottles of Foudre No 8 Cognac (£95). One of his Laithwaites wine sprees cost £2,884.

373. D.C. Council Members Thumb Their Noses at Poor People | Godfather Politics
Like so much of what goes in Washington, lawmakers believe that passing a law overrules reality. The latest attempt to subvert economic law is the approval of “a bill requiring some large retailers to pay their employees a 50 percent premium over the city’s minimum wage, a day after Wal-Mart warned that the law would jeopardize its plans in the city.”I live on the edge of west Cobb County in Georgia. Wal-Mart wanted to put a store a few miles from our home on a four-lane road that connects the city of Marietta and Dallas, Georgia — Dallas Highway. The county added a number of provisions that the large retailer refused to accept. So instead of Cobb County getting the tax revenue, it went to Paulding County just across the Cobb County to build the new store that is not visible from the road. Paulding got customers from Cobb and Paulding counties, but Paulding got all the tax revenue.

374. As the Wisconsin Tea Party gives Obama a bloody nose, Bill Clinton stabs him in the back –...
Tuesday night saw a double whammy rejection of Obamanomics – once by the voters and once by former President Bill Clinton. Given a choice, the people of Wisconsin took Republican fiscalism over Democratic populism in a recall vote that let Tea Party favourite Scott Walker keep his state’s governorship. Incredibly, Bill Clinton – the man the White House sent to represent the President during the election – compounded the result by admitting that the country was in a recession and by urging Congress to extend the Bush tax cuts. That makes him the most senior liberal in the nation to cast doubt on Obama’s economic strategy. The people of Wisconsin are trending towards Romneynomics in 2012. So too, it would seem, is Hillary Clinton's husband.

375. Texas booms while California busts | Mark Hemingway | Special Reports | Washington Examiner
Among the states, it has become clear there are two competing visions of political economy in America, embodied by California and Texas. One vision involves the economic devastation that comes of an overregulated economy. The other reveals the prosperity unleashed by smaller government. Broadly speaking, the two states have many similarities. They have diverse...

376. Sweden’s failed Tobin tax experiment | City A.M.
BAD ideas have a habit of never really going away. There were renewed calls at the weekend for a Tobin tax on financial transactions, a deeply flawed concept which remains popular in influential circles. Supporters should acquaint themselves with an excellent study published in the mid-1990s by the Canadian government’s depository services programme, which remains the definitive article on the subject.

377. Climategate – Corus Redcar Steel Works The Price Of Gordon Brown’s Insane Climate Change Policies
One of the topics on tonight’s Question Time was the last shift at Redcar Steel Works which is being moth balled by it’s owners Corus Tata. There was a great deal of passion and anger about the closure of Redcar, the prospect must be frightening for members of the workforce in their 50’s; the chances of people in this age group ever getting another job are about the same as finding a snowflake in the Sahara.

378. Ministers condemn UN inspector slamming Government's housing and welfare policies | Mail Online
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith reacted with fury after UN inspector Raquel Rolnik issued what he called an 'utterly ridiculous' report.Miss Rolnik's visit to Britain last year as the UN's 'special rapporteur' on housing, during which she met dozens of council house tenants, visited food banks and travellers' sites and invited written submissions, prompted a storm of controversy. The academic, brought up a Marxist, offered an animal sacrifice to Karl Marx when she was studying for her master's degree in architecture, according to her sister.

379. Sajid Javid MP: How to rebuild the British economy | Conservative Home
Sajid Javid is the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove and was previously a senior Managing Director with Deutsche Bank. In this Platform, he builds on his Maiden Speech of last week, and argues that the global economic outlook puts even more pressure on us to start cutting public spending immediately. Not only have we inherited an utter economic mess from Labour but the global economic outlook is about to complicate matters further.Let’s remind ourselves of the domestic disaster that we have been left to clean up. At 12 per cent of GDP, Labour passed us the largest deficit in Europe. During their 13 years in office, Labour took our visible national debt from £351 billion to £894 billion, an increase of 155 per cent.Labour also mastered the dark art of off-balance sheet borrowing, in much the same way as RBS, Citibank and Enron did. For instance, our PFI liabilities are estimated to be at least £150 billion and our public sector pension liabilities an eye watering £2,000 billion. Combine these with the visible debt and, at £3,044 billion, you have one of the most indebted nations on Earth.

381. Quarter One 2012 – Government carries on growing, construction shrinks
The headline figure of minus 0.2% for economic growth in the first quarter of 2012 may be revised at a later date. It confirms that the economy is becalmed at best. It will doubtless lead to more demands from some to raise public spending and borrowing, to provide an additional fiscal stimulus. Readers should look more carefully at the underlying figures before rushing to such a false conclusion.

382. Politics: Democrats in denial: ObamaCare clearly killing jobs | Best of Cain
It is often said that liberals don’t understand economic incentives. If they did, it’s presumed, they would have known that ObamaCare would destroy jobs by making labor more expensive.I don’t think it’s true that they don’t understand how these incentives work. As two items in the news the past week demonstrate, they understand the incentives perfectly well except when they’re too invested in denying the truth about them.Last week, I wrote about the Cadillac Tax, which essentially the Democrats’ attempt to eliminate “too good” health insurance by levying a punitive tax on companies who provide more generous benefits than Democrats prefer. When they included the Cadillac Tax in ObamaCare, Democrats understood exactly what they were doing. They were trying to eliminate something they don’t like by adding to the cost of that thing.

384. These Senators Could Be in Ethics Trouble Over the IRS Scandal | TheBlaze.com
The smoking gun in the IRS targeting scandal could be found in the Senate, one advocacy group says, pointing out a correspondence it believes pressured the tax agency to impose extra scrutiny on conservative groups as part of a Democratic election strategy in 2010 and 2012.The Center for Competitive Politics, which opposes campaign finance restrictions and other limits on political speech, filed a complaint with the Senate Select Committee on Ethics against nine Democratic senators, most notably Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin of Illinois and Carl Levin of Michigan, for repeated lobbying of the IRS to probe conservative groups. It also specifically cites Charles Schumer of New York, who was the lead author of letters to the IRS signed by Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire; Tom Udall of New Mexico; Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island; Al Franken of Minnesota; Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Jeff Merkley of Oregon.
