Yesterday I asked in Treasury Questions what the extra £64.6 billion current spending this year is being spent on, compared to 2009-10. The Chancellor did not have time to itemise the main increases, so I thought it would be of interest to set out what they are spending the extra on. I appreciate these are all cash sums, so where pay and prices have risen some of the money is needed to pay for such increases.The biggest increases are on benefits. This year benefits are scheduled to cost £7.1 billion more than last year, and £19 billion more than 2009-10. Gross Interest charges are forecast to fall by £2.6 billion this year compared to last, but are up by £13.9 billion compared to 2009-10.

Many busy people only get a bin collection from their Council. They don’t have children at school, are not around when many of the leisure facilities are open and don’t need social services. Of course we benefit from others using these services and should be pleased that people in need and pain can get help. However, it does make the Council Tax bill even more unpalatable if the one service you have to use is only available fortnightly.

The Prime Minister and his Deputy chose a tractor factory to pre launch the Queen’s speech agenda on Tuesday. They heralded the opening words of the Gracious Speech, that this new session of Parliament is going to be dedicated to sorting out the economy and promoting faster growth.It does not worry me that the Speech was light on new bills. The UK is scarcely short of laws. Much of what needs to be done now requires competent administration rather than lots of new legislation. The health, welfare and school reforms require patient and purposeful execution and follow up.Nor does the backdrop of their news conference cause me as much concern or amsuement as some journalists who wrote the obvious pieces about tractor production statistics, and the sea of blue and yellow tops sported by the workforce. The government after all has said much about leading an industrial revival, so it needs to paint its picture, and it needs to listen more to people who make things to see what else it can do to promote more home grown manufacturing.
