161. Sharing the proceeds of Growth | Douglas Carswell | Home
What's worse than an unfunded tax cut? An unfunded spending commitment. At least if you borrow to reduce tax, you have a less sclerotic economy to show for it in the end.For several years now the debate about tax cuts has been shut down. Whenever anyone so much as hints at the need for lower taxes, up pops a Treasury minister to remind us about the dangers of unfunded tax cuts. See here and here and here.

162. Britain’s ‘Conservative’ Govt To Introduce SUGAR TAX Even Though Evidence Suggests It Doesn’t Cut Calories
Britain will introduce a sugar tax on soft drinks in 2018, the ‘Conservative’ Chancellor George Osborne announced on Wednesday. The shock announcement hit share prices in drinks and sugar firms, while left-wing campaigners celebrated the move. The IEA studied areas with consumption taxes, and found that “even the wide-ranging food tax regime of Hungary only affects a fraction of the calorie supply,” adding: “Early evidence from Mexico suggests that a ten per cent tax on sugary drinks led to an average daily decline in consumption of 36ml per person (Colchero et al. 2016). As Tom Sanders, a professor of nutrition and dietetics, notes, this is the equivalent of 16 calories and is ‘a drop in the caloric ocean”.

167. Center for Consumer Freedom – Philly Mayor’s New Soda-Tax Proposal Is Plain Nutters
We’re sure Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has gotten more than his fair share of playground teasing for his last name, but with his new proposal to tax soda, he’s certainly living up to it. Yesterday, in front of an unhappy city council, he announced a misguided pitch to reintroduce a two-cents-per-ounce excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. But his memory must be short: Just one year ago, a nearly identical tax on soda fizzled, thanks to Philadelphians tired of politicians using “sin taxes” on snacks to plug budget shortfalls.Philadelphia’s public schools are facing a $629 million education budget gap, but Mayor Nutter’s plan to solve the problem partially through a tax on sugary drinks is a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. Apparently the mayor and other tax advocates believe it will pull the double whammy of swelling city coffers while slimming citizens’ waistlines. But this wrongheaded tax has been tried before – with miserable results.

Labour has proposed a new tax raid on the pension savings of more than 300,000 wealthier Britons, in one of Ed Balls's first big policy announcements. The shadow chancellor said those earning more than £150,000 should only receive basic rate tax relief on their retirement savings. 175. Osborne's tax breaks for frackers: at once too much and too little – and far, far too late...
Two cheers for George Osborne's latest announcement on tax breaks for frackers. Actually, maybe one cheer, because I can see at least a couple of things seriously wrong with it.The first is that it is a function not of high principle and sound practice but of the internecine warfare which has been ravaging this useless Coalition throughout its existence. Fracking would be great for Britain and it's what our economy very much needs sooner rather than later. All the relatively sane members of the Coalition have long known this from Owen Paterson and Michael Fallon to Osborne himself. But at every turn they have been hamstrung by the Lib Dem green ideologues at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, led by the dreaded Ed Davey, who have put every conceivable obstacle in the nascent industry's way. Osborne's tax break, in other words, is merely an expensive means of trying to counter DECC's obstructionism.
