74. Boris Johnson speech's extraordinary attack on the 'quitters, the splitters, the kippers' |...
The London Mayor addresses a rally of Conservative activists tonight, before his official speech to the conference faithful in Birmingham tomorrow.Mr Johnson vowed to take on the 'quitters, the splitters, the kippers' who are trying to undermine the Tory party. And he mocked defectors with an extraordinary sex joke. He told delighted Tory activists:'The EU commission wants to ban vacuum cleaners on the grounds that they are too powerful.‘If you do not handle your vacuum cleaner correctly, you may end up inhaling the hamster – the budgerigar through the bars of the cage.‘And I have read that there are some people – probably the type who are thinking of defecting to UKIP – who present themselves at A&E with barely credible injuries sustained through vacuum cleaner abuse.’The outspoken remark is likely to infuriate UKIP supporters, and will draw comparisons to when defence minister Anna Soubry said of Mr Farage: 'I always think he looks like somebody has put their finger up his bottom and he really rather likes it.'

77. The Chancellor's medicine may be harsh. But Ed Balls would be economic poison | Mail Online
George Osborne has many enemies. Something about the Chancellor of the Exchequer exasperates people even when he tries to be nice, as he did during moments of his Autumn Statement yesterday. After telling the nation that he is cutting corporation tax, increasing investment allowances for small business and scrapping the scheduled 3p increase in fuel duty, he said: ‘We’re all in this together.’ Voters could be heard jeering as far off as Colwyn Bay.It’s not his fault, but most of his life has been financed not from his earnings like the vast majority of the population, but instead from the family fortune. George Osborne may occasionally catch a cold like the rest of us, but he is rash to pretend he knows from experience what it is like to struggle to pay a mortgage. The Chancellor’s core message yesterday was brutally honest and inevitably bleak. He restated his conviction that Britain is on the right course back to economic health, but then had to acknowledge it is taking longer than he had hoped to get there. He sped through a list of numbers — financial figures which are incomprehensible to most of us — before declaring that the national debt will only start falling in 2016 rather than 2015 as previously announced, and then only if a lot of other factors go to plan. Most of his policy changes tinkered with small amounts of money which will provide marginal incentives for economic growth. They will have little or no effect on businesses or industrial behaviour, but are the only carrots the Chancellor can offer when he has so little money to spend. He sat down looking like an apostle who has announced that the Second Coming is indefinitely postponed, and waited for the Pharisees to start throwing stones. But then Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls rose to his feet — and almost immediately got his tongue tied up in them. Instead of telling the Commons that public debt has risen, he roused Tory derision by saying the opposite.

79. The dirty tricks dossier: ANDREW PIERCE reveals Labour's union vote-rigging scandal is far more extensive & disturbing than Red Ed has admitted
Even as Ed Miliband was delivering a landmark speech this week in which he rather unconvincingly claimed he would weaken the unions’ stranglehold over the Labour party, his problems were spreading like a malignant tumour. After enduring yet another torrid week because of the party’s incestuous relationship with Unite, he had hoped to draw a line under allegations of an underhand union operation to rig the parliamentary candidate selection in Falkirk, which the union denies. His officials continue to insist that Falkirk — where Unite is accused of signing up its members to the local party (some without their knowledge) — was a one-off aberration.Yet despite Mr Miliband’s pledge to change the system in which union members pay a levy to Labour unless they choose to opt out, his office has received at least three letters from activists demanding an investigation into ‘serious irregularities’ in the selection procedure in another constituency. I can also reveal.....

80. Miliband's growing reliance on unions exposed: Labour's paymasters provide 77% of party's funding
Ed Miliband's growing dependence on Labour’s union paymasters was laid bare yesterday as it was revealed that the barons are providing 77 per cent of the party’s funding.Figures released by the Electoral Commission watchdog revealed that the Unite union, led by far-Left firebrand Len McCluskey, was again Labour’s biggest donor, contributing £772,195 between April and June.In total, the unions gave Labour more than £2.4million in the second quarter, out of a total of just over £3million, which included lump sums of £485,830 from the GMB and £458,080 from Unison.Labour’s reliance on union cash is particularly stark since the figures also show that Labour is in a staggering amount of debt, with outstanding loans of £12.8million, compared with £2.6million for the Tories. The party was forced to increase its overdraft facilities by £2.4million earlier this year with the troubled Co-operative Bank.
