81. The extraordinary safety of nuclear power | Roger Helmer MEP
I want to say a bit more about last Friday’s nuclear debate at Exeter University. I was struck by the misconceptions that were expressed. The local Green Party man argued that Somali pirates were motivated to hi-jack ships and kidnap tourists as a protest against the social injustice caused by the nuclear industry (honest, I’m not making this up). One speaker from the floor said she understood the safety statistics, but couldn’t we understand public concern over nuclear power when we remembered Chernobyl and Bhopal? I had to point out that Bhopal was a chemical industry accident, and had nothing whatever to do with nuclear power. Indeed she’d neatly illustrated my point that accidents and disasters occur from time to time in all major industries. Within the electricity generation industry we need to look at the statistics to see which technologies are safer. In my speech, I pointed out that many prominent environmentalists were now calling for nuclear energy. There’s “Environmentalists for nuclear power”. There’s James Lovelock of the Gaia hypothesis, and granddaddy of the environmental movement. And George Monbiot, a lifetime opponent of nuclear who has just had a Damascene conversion to the cause. But although I myself have been a long-time supporter of nuclear power, I must confess that I was bowled over by the statistics that I mugged up on before the debate. Nuclear is not merely as safe as coal or gas or hydro. It’s not just a bit safer. It’s hugely safer, by several orders of magnitude. That’s hundreds or thousands of times safer.

82. Beware of "Smart Meters" | Roger Helmer MEP
Pretty soon you’ll be offered a “smart meter”, with all sorts of sales talk about the benefits and savings it will deliver. But smart meters may not be all good news. The Mail on Sunday has an interesting article pointing out that there are serious flaws in their design, and that many problems have not been resolved with these expensive systems. There’s a happy, smiley marketing campaign which advises consumers of the benefits of the system — “helping the consumer” to understand how to reduce electricity use and therefore lower bills, and so on. But they don’t discuss the risks: the wireless system may not be robust; it may be vulnerable to malicious hacking; the programme nationally will cost £11bn; and it indeed may change the way consumers are billed — but not in the way the energy companies and government are selling the idea.

83. On green issues no one talks more 'crap' than David Cameron – Telegraph Blogs
"Get rid of all the green crap" David Cameron has told his aides. According to today's Sun, at any rate. I'm sure Lynton Crosby will be delighted – even if Downing Street has subsequently issued a careful statement saying that this doesn't sound like the kind of language the Prime Minister would use.So that's a non-denial denial then. But even if Cameron did issue such a directive, in slightly more prime ministerial terms, crap remains what, essentially, he was talking. Let us not forget that only last week Cameron was explicitly linking Typhoon Haiyan to "climate change."

86. Germany's clean energy plan backfired - Salon.com
The nation's move away from nuclear power drove it right back to coal. When a nuclear power plant closes, a coal plant opens. At least, that’s the way things are shaping up in Germany, where the move away from nuclear energy appears to have backfired. For the second consecutive year, according to Bloomberg, the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions are set to increase.German Chancellor Angela Merkel made headlines back in 2011 when, in the wake of the reactor meltdown in Tokyo, she announced the impending closure of Germany’s 17 nuclear reactors.

88. Wind turbine fires 'ten times more common than thought', experts warn - Telegraph
Study backed by Imperial College finds wind turbines prone to "catastrophic" fires but the true scale of the problem is unknown. Wind turbines may catch on fire ten times more often than is publicly reported, putting nearby properties at risk and casting doubt on their green credentials, researchers have warned. The renewable energy industry keeps no record of the number of turbine fires, meaning the true extent of the problem is unknown, a study backed by Imperial College London finds on Thursday.

91. Polarbeargate? – Telegraph Blogs
This is too good a story not to repeat, not least for the headline it invites: (H/T Ed West; Julian Morris)JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A federal wildlife biologist whose observation in 2004 of presumably drowned polar bears in the Arctic helped to galvanize the global warming movement has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated for scientific misconduct, possibly over the veracity of that article.

92. ARCTIC ICE COVER | Roger Helmer MEP
The following alarmist paragraph seems typical of what we read today: “The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot. Reports all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met with as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.”Yet in fact it’s a quote from the US Weather Bureau dated 1922, ninety years ago. There are other similar reports from the late 19th and early 20th century. Climate alarmism is not a new or recent phenomenon. We read breathless accounts of Russian icebreakers making their way through Arctic seas as though this was unprecedented, yet similar voyages are recorded a century ago.

93. Wishful thinking at the CBI | Roger Helmer MEP
I was struck by an article in The Sunday Telegraph of July 20th, by the CBI’s Deputy Director General Katja Hall. “Let’s dispel the myth that we have no allies in Brussels”, it’s headlined. And as an example of wishful thinking, of the triumph of hope over experience, this would be hard to beat.

94. Lies, Damned Lies and Newspaper reports | Roger Helmer MEP
I think it was Enoch Powell who said that there’s no more point in a politician complaining about the media than a sailor complaining about the sea. He was right, of course. So I try very hard not to respond to what looks like deliberate provocation, never mind defamatory fictions and lies, in the press — nor indeed the often even more outrageous calumnies in the social media. Some appalling stuff was published in the papers during the Euro and Newark election campaigns, and for the most part I avoided comment. But now that both of those campaigns are over, I’d like to respond to a couple of the more egregious claims.

95. UKIP sets the agenda, ...and drives the government re-shuffle | Roger Helmer MEP
Perhaps the most striking feature of David Cameron’s extensive reshuffle is that is largely a defensive response to UKIP. We are setting the agenda. We are making the weather. The three main themes of the reshuffle were:Presenting a more eurosceptic facade: Philip Hammond, described as “a vociferous eurosceptic”, becomes Foreign Secretary, spun as “The most openly sceptic Foreign Secretary in decades”. Michael Fallon goes to Defence. He too has a eurosceptic reputation – though it’s difficult to see how he’ll bring that to bear in the defence rôle. Priti Patel becomes Secretary to the Treasury, and is a lady of robust opinions. On the other hand the nomination of Lord “Who’s He?” Hill as EU Commissioner raised some eyebrows – and got Jean-Claude Juncker googling to find out who he was.
