66. The dirty tricks dossier: ANDREW PIERCE reveals Labour's union vote-rigging scandal is far more extensive & disturbing than Red Ed has admitted
Even as Ed Miliband was delivering a landmark speech this week in which he rather unconvincingly claimed he would weaken the unions’ stranglehold over the Labour party, his problems were spreading like a malignant tumour. After enduring yet another torrid week because of the party’s incestuous relationship with Unite, he had hoped to draw a line under allegations of an underhand union operation to rig the parliamentary candidate selection in Falkirk, which the union denies. His officials continue to insist that Falkirk — where Unite is accused of signing up its members to the local party (some without their knowledge) — was a one-off aberration.Yet despite Mr Miliband’s pledge to change the system in which union members pay a levy to Labour unless they choose to opt out, his office has received at least three letters from activists demanding an investigation into ‘serious irregularities’ in the selection procedure in another constituency. I can also reveal.....

68. One million useless solar panels - JoNova
Only five years ago Australia had a mere 20,000 solar systems installed on homes across the country. Now thanks to a Gonzo-Big-Daddy-Government we have over one million solar systems, almost all of them producing electricity that could have been made for something like a fifth of the price with coal. The Clean Energy Regulator spins it as though wasting money on inefficient equipment in the hope of reducing world temperatures is a good thing for Australia.

69. 'BBC's biased climate science reporting isn't biased enough' claims report – Telegraph...
Before commenting on the BBC Trust’s report into the BBC’s science coverage, I thought I’d take the trouble of reading the actual document rather than the press previews. I’m very glad I waited because the finished product is an absolute corker. Let me take you through some of my favourite moments. The report, as you may be aware, was written by my fellow Telegraph columnist Steve Jones. Besides being a fine and engaging writer, Dr Jones is a geneticist of distinction and I would certainly never dream of questioning his judgement in his fields of expertise (notably Drosophila and snails). Fortunately, as becomes quite clear reading the report, climate science isn’t one of them.

70. Tax incentives and tax avoidance | JohnRedwoodsDiary
As politicians and some in the media work the country into a frenzy against tax dodgers, please spare a thought for all those politicians and commentators arguing for more tax breaks to promote good works, more gr0wth and healthy lifestyles. One man’s tax dodger is another man’s prudent individual taking advantage of strongly recommended tax breaks which have been carefully honed by government. Some people pay less tax because they give generously to charity, some because they are making accelerated savings for retirement so they will not depend on benefits and taxpayers in their old age, some because they are investing in places and causes approved by politicians, some because they are lending their money to the government to spend on public services.

72. The Appalling Ignorance of the Climate Change Committee | Roger Helmer MEP
The Climate Change Committee is (it claims) “an independent committee” created under the terms of the infamous Climate Change Act 2008. Independent maybe, but fully bought-in to the IPCC carbon fantasy.Their latest pronouncements show a mind-boggling degree of ignorance. How can these people, utterly detached from the real world, advise government on anything? And how shall we cope with the economic fall-out from their prescriptions? See a report on their statement here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/9362804/Greenhouse-gas-emissions-fell-last-year-but-only-because-of-milder-weather.htmlLet’s see what they said.“Greater investment is needed in low carbon energy including wind power”. Haven’t they read all the research on emissions from systems consisting of wind plus back-up? Don’t they know that emissions savings from wind power are trivial or zero? That it’s just money spent on political gestures and garden ornaments, not power generation?

75. An energy policy that makes little sense - Telegraph
The very idea that an advanced economy such as ours faces an energy crisis within the next few years should attract the most urgent attention of our political leaders. Yet we appear to be drifting into a situation of great seriousness because they are all wedded to unrealistic decarbonisation targets that none seems willing to revisit. As Owen Paterson, the former environment secretary, is going to say in a speech this week, the country will “struggle to keep the lights on” unless something is done soon.Much of the current problem stems from mistakes made by the last government. Labour effectively scrapped the UK civil nuclear programme until, far too late in the day, it tried to revive it as part of this country’s commitment to lower CO2 emissions.

76. Solar Executive Tries to Intimidate Bill Gates Into Opposing Fossil Fuels - Forbes
Bill Gates has gotten a lot of criticism for endorsing–or at least for not opposing–poor countries’ use of cheap, plentiful, reliable energy from fossil fuels to improve their lives. Here’s the background: In a post on his “Gates Notes” blog entitled “Two Videos That Illuminate Energy Poverty,” Gates recommends that readers view two videos by the Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg entitled “Fighting Poverty with Fossil Fuels” and “Saving Lives with Fossil Fuels” (they’re worth watching, and each is barely over a minute). Poor countries, says Gates, "desperately need cheap sources of energy now to fuel the economic growth that lifts families out of poverty. They can’t afford today’s expensive clean energy solutions, and we can’t expect them wait for the technology to get cheaper."

77. How To Solve The Water Crisis: Use More Fossil Fuels - Forbes
It’s cliché to say we have a water crisis. It’s certainly cliché to blame it on “climate change,” i.e. fossil fuels. But if we look at the big-picture data, as against fixating on the most dramatic headlines about the places that happen to be in a state of drought (such as southern California, where I live), a different story emerges: thanks in part to increasing fossil fuel use, we are bringing about a world where our bodies and our crops have more of the water they need, not less.

78. The BBC's 'dirty little secret' lands it in a new scandal - Telegraph
The truth of a secret meeting that decided BBC policy on climate change has come out online.Unfolding in the shadow of the greatest crisis in the BBC’s 90-year history has been another scandal, rather less publicised, which again reveals how profoundly the BBC has gone off the rails, morally and professionally. Last week, I reported how the BBC had spent large sums of our money fielding an array of lawyers against a pensioner from Wales to hide what I called, with considerable understatement, “a dirty little secret”. But that secret has now been disclosed to the world, confirming how seriously the BBC has been misrepresenting its policy on one of the most far-reaching issues of our time.A year ago, I published a detailed report attempting to unravel what has long been a serious puzzle. How was it that, over the past six years, the BBC has been so ready to betray its statutory duty to impartiality by such relentlessly one-sided promotion of the scare over global warming and all it entails, such as the Government’s policy on wind farms? No organisation has done more to obscure the truth about an issue whose political and financial implications for us all are incalculable.

79. The lobbying strength of big business is puny compared to that of the global NGOs –...
It's hard not to admire George Monbiot for publishing all his earnings. As he says, journalists often have a giving-it-out-but-not-taking-it problem. I know a columnist, for example, who often writes that Britain needs to export more weapons, but who has never, to my knowledge, divulged that he goes shooting at the expense of a prominent arms dealer. This doesn't stop him dismissing MPs as uniquely venal and corrupt.

80. Reshuffles can go wrong
Past Prime Ministers have often been damaged by their reshuffles. The reason is simple. There is no sensible personnel function for Ministers in modern government. It begins with the failure to map the interests, experience and qualifications of the talent pool, the MPs and peers available for appointment. It is worsened by those who may include friends and spin doctors of the Prime Minister who think the best way to conduct the run up to a reshuffle is a discussion of the merits and especially the failings of the candidates in the press without involving them. It can reach a climax with job offers to people who have no wish to do the job in question, allied to attempts to sack people from office who had no idea they were likely to lose their job and who are most reluctant to leave.
