529. UK CABINET RESHUFFLE: Cameron Culls Gay Marriage Opponents, Axes Male Ministers
British Prime Minister David Cameron has targeted opponents of his flagship 'Same Sex Marriage' legislation, as well as reducing the number of men in the British cabinet in tonight's long-awaited UK Cabinet reshuffle. The move has seen older, middle class minsters dumped in an unprecedented cull, with the only two Secretaries of State who voted against gay marriage – Owen Paterson and David Jones – being sacked.Cameron is embarking on his final ministerial changes before the general election in May 2015. Whilst no appointments are made until tomorrow news that younger women will replace the old guard is now the talk of Westminster. There are also concerns that Paterson and Jones were the two key right-wingers in the Cabinet. Paterson was the notably pro-farming Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

530. Stop hoarding cash, businesses told as UK narrowly avoids double-dip recession | Mail Online
The UK has narrowly avoided a double-dip recession, but will struggle for the rest of the year unless businesses stop hoarding cash and start investing, a forecaster warned today.Emergency measures from the Bank of England, European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve have boosted confidence and stabilised financial markets, pulling the UK back from the brink of recession, the Ernst & Young ITEM Club said. The ITEM Club has forecast that UK GDP growth will be a 'dismal' 0.4 per cent this year, which is half the 0.8 per cent estimated by the tax and spending watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, before rising to 1.5 per cent in 2013 and 2.6 per cent in 2014.

532. Tory MP Robert Halfon: We Should be the Party of Redistribution, Full Employment, Social Justice
In the immediate aftermath of UKIP council seat gains across the United Kingdom, the 'little to the left' website Conservative Home held its annual conference in Westminster.Noteworthy amongst other reported comments were those by Conservative Party MP and Tory HQ darling Robert Halfon. Halfon's position in Harlow is precarious at best, and recently dozens of young Tory activists took to the constituency in an attempt to shore up Mr Halfon's vote.So it may have hurt a little to see UKIP gain 5 seats on Harlow council yesterday, as well as taking over a third of the popular vote in the area – mostly from former Tory voters.

533. Labour would bring back 50p top rate of tax so the richest pay their fair share, says Ed Balls |...
A Labour government would re-introduce the 50p top rate of tax to force the rich into paying their fair share, Ed Balls pledged today. The shadow chancellor said he would reverse the decision taken by the coalition to reduce the amount levied on Britain's highest earners - those on more than £150,000 - so he could help reduce the deficit.Mr Balls told the annual Fabian Society conference in central London this morning that 'those with the broadest shoulders' should bear a 'fairer share of the burden'.However, his plans could cause 'unmitigated disaster', a tax campaigners' group warned, while businesses said the call smacked of a 'knee jerk reaction'.

535. Now LibDems want to tax jewellery: New wealth tax plan to target ALL assets
Families will be forced to pay tax on heirlooms under new plans drawn up by the Liberal Democrats while tax inspectors would have powers to enter homes and value items.Last night, both the jewellery and mansion tax moves were condemned by the Lib Dems’ Conservative Coalition partners as ‘the politics of envy at their worst’.The plans come in a policy document drawn up by party tax experts – including Ms Munt and key Clegg ally David Laws – as groundwork for the Lib Dems’ next General Election manifesto.

536. When I criticised the NHS, my elderly mother was harassed – which helps explain the mess...
Three years ago, at the very moment that he was presiding over the abominations at Mid Staffs – and, as we now know, several other hospitals – Andy Burnham, then Health Secretary, was calling me ‘unpatriotic’ for pointing out the poor performance of the NHS in international league tables.I mention it, not to have a go at the poor fellow – the rest of the country is already doing that – but to explore the connection between the tendency to shout down any criticism of the NHS and the number of British hospitals which are, as the Keogh Report put it, ‘trapped in mediocrity’. Any organisation that is treated as being beyond reproach is bound in time to become flabby, self-serving and producer-centred. It happened to the mega-charities. It happened to the United Nations. It would be surprising if the NHS were an exception.

538. Ed Miliband can pretend that Falkirk was just 'a few bad apples', or he can admit that Labour is...
This weekend Ed Miliband is fighting for control of his party. And at the moment, it’s a fight that isn’t going all that well.Miliband’s first big problem is that he has not yet been able to settle on – or get his shadow cabinet and ministers to agree on – a settled line on the scale of the crisis. This morning I was on the radio with Owen Smith, the shadow Welsh secretary, and his basic message was “nothing to see here, move along”. Falkirk, he claimed, was a one-off, perpetrated by a few rotten local apples. There were not really any wider issues, the whole thing was a storm being whipped up by a malign press, and it was time for everyone to calm down. The difficulty for Labour is that Owen Smith’s apples defence isn’t compatible with the strategy Ed Miliband and his team have slowly – some would say too slowly – been developing over the past 48 hours.

539. 100,000 extra pages of EU rules under Labour | Roger Helmer MEP
Research by the think tank Open Europe has shown that the Acquis is now over 170,000 pages long in total and that from 1998 to 2008 the number of legal acts in force in the EU has gone from 10,800 in 1998 to over 26,500 in 2008.While some legislation may be advantageous, for example if it helps complete the internal market, the sheer volume of new EU rules represents an added burden on business and highlights how Labour has failed to prevent powers being passed to the EU in a number of important areas. For example, EU labour market laws already account for over 20 percent of the total cost of regulation in the UK. Despite this, the UK government has agreed to a new directive that would force employers to give agency workers equal rights as full-time staff, thus adding new burdens to business. Labour MEPs are also still seeking new ways to scrap Britain’s opt-out of the Working Time Directive, which has been essential for workers and businesses to remain competitive.

540. Watch out for the food police! | Roger Helmer MEP
As a politician with a broadly libertarian outlook, I’m getting increasingly frustrated by the government’s assumption that it’s entitled to tell us what to eat and drink. I think it’s a fundamental right of all grown-ups in their right mind to decide for themselves what they choose to put into their mouths. By all means let the government offer good advice (if it can’t help itself). But it should stop seeking to persecute those who exercise choices other than those approved by the powers-that-be.

542. The paradox of democracy in the UK
Let me return like a moth to the flame to the question of UKIP. I get plenty of criticism on this site for fighting the good fight against the use and extension of EU power on the simple ground that I do not join UKIP, who happen to agree with some of my views. I will try again to explain why I and other like minded Conservative MPs will continue to battle for the restoration of UK democracy as Conservatives.

544. BRITAIN’S EU MEMBERSHIP: Cameron faces new EU Treaties and a referendum whether he likes...
Interrogation of the latest EU summit reveals a Coalition Europe policy facing total collapse: the Prime Minister’s veto had no effect whatsoever, the City wants to be part of the banking union now, and Britain’s rejection of further integration inevitably means Treaty renegotiation and at least one referendum by 2015. But whether full Union ever materialises remains severely in doubt, with tensions rising to fever pitch between Berlin and Athens, and Italo-Spanish bond yields rising inexorably. The distraction of Diamonds (and the Tories working 24/7 to disguise how the Libor Party is virtually a division of Central Office) has kept media and public attention away from Europe’s continuing slide into chaos for a week or so now. But the biggest thing coming to light is just how comprehensively David Cameron has misjudged the situation there – and shown himself to be comletely devoid of any power or influence.
