385. What's the difference between a high street banker and a back street fraudster? | The Deep End (ConservativeHome)
Has the backlash against the bankers gone too far? Perhaps, but given the sheer number and variety of banking scandals, it’s a wonder they’ve got off so lightly. In an essay for the London Review of Books, John Lancaster’s theory is that because the scandals have come so thick and fast, we haven’t been able to focus on what really should be making us angry

386. Austerity is working – but we must continue to challenge its diehard critics | City A.M.
THE “BACKFIRE effect” is a term coined by the US political scientist Brendan Nyhan to describe how a person’s deeply-held convictions may actually get stronger when presented with contradictory evidence. In one recent study, Nyhan and his colleagues presented a group with information confirming the safety of vaccines. Faced with the facts, those who already distrusted vaccines became even less likely to vaccinate their children.I think we can now see a backfire effect in response to the government’s economic strategy. Faced with evidence that the plan is working – whether record jobs, a 9 per cent rise in investment spending, or the fastest growth in the G7 – some of austerity’s most diehard critics double-down their opposition.

By Tim Montgomerie Follow Tim on Twitter. Over at the New Statesman I'm described as an "economic neanderthal" by the left-wing economist David Blanchflower. 390. West Coast Main Line: Rail-bid civil servants 'exchanged derogatory emails about Virgin boss Richard Branson | Daily Mail
Derogatory emails about Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Trains were allegedly sent between civil servants under investigation over the shambles of the West Coast mainline franchise. The messages were between a dozen staff at the Department for Transport, which has been accused of allowing the development of a culture characterised as ‘ABB – Anyone But Branson’.The emails were allegedly sent between those responsible for overseeing the franchise bidding and other decision-makers connected with the route. The Government awarded the new £7billion franchise to FirstGroup, but cancelled it before the planned handover in December after Sir Richard’s Virgin group, which offered £700million less, made a successful legal challenge on the grounds that the Government ‘got its sums wrong’.

391. More voters recognise Gromit's pal than Ed Miliband (and that other one's Yvette Cooper, not...
The chattering classes may have judged Ed Miliband’s conference speech this week to have been a success, but did the public really take much notice? To test how he scored with voters, we sent reporters across the country to show people photos of him and four other major Labour figures (as well as Wallace from Wallace & Gromit, to whom Miliband has been likened) to see if they could identify them.In Manchester (where Labour’s conference was held), only four out of ten people could name Miliband — but eight out of ten recognised Wallace. We also asked people to identify deputy leader Harriet Harman, shadow chancellor Ed Balls, Ed Miliband’s brother David and shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper.Poor Yvette! No one we asked in London, Leeds or Plymouth could name her. Although plenty tried — suggesting names including Carol Vorderman, Anne Robinson and Anne Diamond.

395. Why does Londons economy perform so much better than the rest of the UK?
When I wrote the Economic Policy Review with colleagues before the last election, one of the most striking findings we highlighted was the persistent outperformance of the London economy compared to the rest of the UK. Indeed, we discovered that the further from London you went the slower the growth. We also reported that the regional economies in the UK that received the largest subsidies and the most government assistance and intervention performed the worst. Some of you are ready to leap to your keyboards to say that you should not claim cause and effect when of course government spends more and intervenes more in parts of the country with poor prospects. Let me spare you the anger. Part of the reason the poorer parts of the country receive more government help is that they are poor to start with. That’s why governments of all persuasions send them more money. They are locked into a single currency with London, so they need transfer payments to survive.
