289. The hidden result of Cancun: dictators get more gas-guzzling cars and private jets –...
Here’s the truest point I’ve heard a politician make about the Cancun global warming conference. UKIP’s Paul Nuttall mockingly congratulates fellow European politicians – just back from the conference – on ensuring that dictators will get more Mercedes cars and private jets.

290. Should the Conservative party lurch right or left?
There will be all manner of calls in the next few days for a change of direction by Conservative Ministers, in the wake of the big swings to Labour in the local elections. The main feature of the elections was a swing to the left as conventionally described. Labour took many votes off the Lib Dems, and some votes off the Conservatives. It extended its hold on many northern towns and cities, and showed an ability to win some seats in the south as well.

292. GE nuclear reactor eats its own waste
As The New York Times observed in its Sunday story on nuclear power, just a few years ago, utilities were telling the Nuclear Regulatory Commission they wanted to build 28 new reactors. Fast forward to today, with the economy driving down energy demand and prices — and climate legislation on the backburner — and those reactors are still on the drawing board. But technological breakthroughs can transform a sluggish sector into a futuristic game-changer. Case in point: GE Hitachi’s Advanced Recycling Center, (ARC). The ARC technology is basically the anti-nuke: it actually burns nuclear waste (even weapons-grade plutonium), and emits exactly zero CO2.Here’s the secret: The system uses a liquid metal — sodium — to control the nuclear reaction, instead of high-pressure water. The sodium-cooling allows the reactor to “burn” the leftover energy in its used fuel — nuclear waste that, in traditional water-cooled reactors, would be taken and stored for thousands of years. In fact, when used fuel is removed from a traditional water-cooled reactor, 95 percent of its potential energy is still untapped.

293. Dithering Europe is heading for the democratic dark ages - Telegraph
A Greek economy run by Brussels will ignore the lessons of history, leading to more misery, writes Boris Johnson.Every day we read of fresh horrors: of once proud bourgeois families queuing for bread, of people in agony because the government has run out of money to pay for cancer drugs. Pensions are being cut, living standards are falling, unemployment is rising, and the suicide rate is now the highest in the EU – having been one of the lowest.By any standards we are seeing a whole nation undergo a protracted economic and political humiliation; and whatever the result of yesterday’s election, we seem determined to make matters worse. There is no plan for Greece to leave the euro, or none that I can discover. No European leader dares suggest that this might be possible, since that would be to profane the religion of Ever Closer Union. Instead we are all meant to be conniving in a plan to create a fiscal union which (if it were to mean anything) would mean undermining the fundamentals of Western democracy. For the sake of bubble-gumming the euro together, we are willing to slaughter democracy in the very place where it was born. What is the point of a Greek elector voting for an economic programme, if that programme is decided in Brussels or – in reality – in Germany? What is the meaning of Greek freedom, the freedom Byron fought for, if Greece is returned to a kind of Ottoman dependency, but with the Sublime Porte now based in Berlin? It won’t work. If things go on as they are, we will see more misery, more resentment, and an ever greater chance that the whole damn kebab van will go up in flames.

294. Actor James Woods: ‘The World is Fighting Islamic Terrorism… Democrats are Fighting for Men to Pee in Ladies’ Rooms’
Actor James Woods thinks that while there are global issues of terrorism, starvation and disease to address, “democrats are fighting for men to pee in ladies’ rooms.”In recent weeks there has been a debate in several states about “bathroom bills” that would require a person to use the restroom that corresponds with their biological gender. Critics have characterized the bills as hostile to transgender people, while defenders argue that the bills are necessary to keep people safe from predators.

295. UK national debt hits staggering new record of over £1TRILLION | Mail Online
The Government's £1trillion debt mountain is the legacy of nearly a decade of the state living beyond its means under Gordon Brown's Labour government, and the pain caused by the financial crisis. The debt, which is measured as the state's liabilities minus its cash, only increased gradually in the early part of the century when the economy was booming. But the financial crisis sparked an explosion in Whitehall borrowing.

299. How Margaret Thatcher's Big Bang could protect the City from Brexit, 30 years on
By breaking the cartel that had dominated the exchange and opening up London to international firms, the sudden deregulation caused by the Big Bang laid the foundations that have helped to propel London into a global powerhouse for finance. But the fuse for the 1986 revolution was lit four years after that, when following the 1983 election Nicholas Goodison, the chairman of the stock exchange, offered to Cecil Parkinson, the secretary of state for trade and industry, to deregulate the City instead of facing a restrictive practices trial. The result was a host of measures that broke the vice-like grip on business exerted by traditional firms, which until then had dominated British finance.

301. Australia vs. the United States: Two Charts that Tell You Everything You Need to Know about Social Security Reform
There are two serious problems with America’s Social Security system. Almost everyone knows about the first problem, which is that the system is bankrupt, with huge unfunded liabilities of about $30 trillion. The other crisis is that the system gives workers a lousy level of retirement income compared to the amount of taxes they pay during their working years. Younger workers are particularly disadvantaged, as are African-Americans because of lower life expectancy. These are critical issues, but perhaps looking at a couple of charts is the best way to illustrate why the Social Security system is inadequate.

302. The riches of London | John Redwood's Diary
Many of you have pointed out in your responses to yesterday’s blog that London has always been richer than the rest of the country. There have always been rich people who want to congregate near to the royal court or to the seat of government, rich people who want to enjoy the culture and society of a large city, people who come to London as it is by far the best known city in the country. There used to be many Englishmen who did well out of royal favour by being at court.London has always been more than the capital, drawing benefit from that. After all, Washington and Brazilia are governing centres, but they play poor second fiddles to New York and Rio. London has managed to be a large commercial and business centre, as well as a capital city. It used to have a great deal of industry. As a contributor has reminded us, 1930s London saw flourishing light industry in iconic buildings along the great arterial roads into the centre. It was the UK’s number one port, with plenty of wharves and port related industry and distribution. It lost its lead to better located places with deeper water like Felixstowe and Dover. Industry declined or migrated.
