449. Climategate: Obama's boot boys strike back – Telegraph Blogs
When I first read this morning that the police had paid a nocturnal visit to the blogger Tallbloke to confiscate his computers I thought at first it was a non-story. Jolly annoying and inconvenient for Tallbloke, obviously, but nothing too sinister. Tallbloke was one of the first people contacted when mystery whistleblower FOIA 2011 leaked the Climategate 2.0 files onto the internet; the ongoing investigation by Norfolk police into the identity of the Climategate leaker has been singularly unsuccessful; so it seemed sadly inevitable that in their flailing desperation to be seen to be doing something, anything, to get their man, the Norfolk plod would resort to tactics like this. (H/T Sir Gawain Towler)

451. Greenpeace's forest policy is unsustainable – Telegraph Blogs
Here is a guest post from one of my environmental heroes, Patrick Moore. The reason he's an environmental hero is because, unlike so many campaigners in the green movement, he doesn't believe that in order to save the world its necessary to destroy Western industrial civilisation.I highly recommend his superb book Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout which describes how he lost his faith in the organisation he co-founded:

So there we go. Among the people who will not, I suspect, be shedding any tears at Mr Toad's long-awaited departure from the Cabinet are:David CameronEveryone in the Cabinet, even including Michael Gove who likes – and is liked by – almost everybody in Parliament.Everyone in the Conservative partyEveryone in the Labour partyEveryone in UKIPPretty much everyone in the Lib Dems. His ex-wife.Every newspaper including the Daily Mirror – which really ought to like him given how pathologically left-wing he is but has happily made an exception owing to the man's unremitting, weapons-grade vileness.

453. With Tory MPs like this who needs to vote Labour? – Telegraph Blogs
Just when I've vowed to lay off writing about the wind industry for a while because I'm so utterly nauseated by its putrescent stench, along comes a story like this:Sacked Energy Minister Charles Hendry has not wasted any time cashing in on his expertise; he has just been announced as the chairman of the wind energy giants Forewind. The consortium comprising of four international companies -Scottish and Southern, RWE, Statoil and Statkraf – was awarded the contract in 2010 to build the huge “Dogger Bank” windfarm 125 kilometres off the Yorkshire coast.Though Hendry has waited for the appropriate cooling off period of three months since leaving government, a look through his declared meetings while a minister leaves an unfortunate taste in the mouth: between June 2010 and October 2011 Hendry hobnobbed six times with the representatives of the companies that make up Forewind, and now he is their boss.

455. Official: the more scientifically illiterate you are, the more you believe in 'climate change'...
Before I head off for my well-earned rest after my last well-earned rest, I can't resist drawing your attention to this delicious story by Lewis Page in the Register.Turns out that a stunt arranged by the US climate alarmist establishment to discredit sceptics has backfired horribly:A US government-funded survey has found that Americans with higher levels of scientific and mathematical knowledge are more sceptical regarding the dangers of climate change than their more poorly educated fellow citizens. The results of the survey are especially remarkable as it was plainly not intended to show any such thing: Rather, the researchers and trick-cyclists who carried it out were doing so from the position that the "scientific consensus" (carbon-driven global warming is ongoing and extremely dangerous) is a settled fact, and the priority is now to find some way of getting US voters to believe in the need for urgent, immediate and massive action to reduce CO2 emissions.Needless to say, the authors of the report fail to draw the logical conclusion from all this. Rather than see it as further proof that Anthropogenic Global Warming theory has about as much in the way of legs as the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, they instead ascribe it – a bit like Steve Jones did in his embarrassing and discredited report for the BBC Trust on the BBC's lamentable science reporting – on false consciousness. What's needed, the authors of the report appear to believe, is not better science – but more PR and spin.

458. San Francisco Aided and Abetted the Murder of Kate Steinle
After admitting to shooting and killing 32-year-old Kate Steinle, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an illegal alien, was asked why he had come to San Francisco. He responded that “he knew San Francisco was a sanctuary city where he would not be pursued by immigration officials.”“Sanctuary cities” are cities within the United States that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws and authorities—similar to the defiance of Southern states to federal law during the civil rights era.By some estimates, there are more than 150 U.S. cities that are endangering the safety of their citizens by refusing to turn over dangerous, criminal aliens to the Department of Homeland Security or inquiring about the immigration status of suspects when they are arrested.

460. IMF bail outs | John Redwood's Diary
I support President Obama, who has said that the USA does not wish to put more into the IMF to bail out members of the Eurozone. The USA thinks the Eurozone should do more for itself. I do not think the UK should be putting more of our money at risk in the Euro through the IMF either.IMF programmes are for sovereign countries. They usually require austerity packages, which are plentiful in Euroland, and devaluations, which are ruled out within the Euro. They require states going through an IMF programme to follow appropriate monetary policies for them controlled by their Central Banks and governments. Again, Euroland members cannot do this, as they have to accept the one size does not fit all policy laid down by the ECB and the EU.

461. Will France and Greece get an end to austerity? | John Redwood's Diary
Over the next few weeks democracy in Euroland is on trial. Most pundits and commentators agree that French electors voted in Mr Hollande to end austerity. Most agree that the massive swing against Pasok and New Democracy in Greece was a swing against austerity policies in the Euro and EU. The problem is, the voters may end up with little changed austerity policies come what may.Part of the reason is the voters’ own mistake. Many French and Greek voters who want an end to austerity think they can have that without withdrawing from the Euro. I fear that is very difficult if not impossible. Voters in Euroland seem reluctant to accept that the whole architecture of the single currency is founded on austerity all the time the huge imbalances between Germany and the rest persist. If the rich areas refuse to send much money to the poor areas – as they do – the poor areas have to deflate, cut wages and costs severely, until they can compete. This cruel economic logic is not popular, but voters are reluctant to conclude that the currency is at fault.

462. Why is the US economy doing better than the UK? | John Redwood's Diary
All the so called neo-Kenysians are out and about telling us that the US is recovering well owing to further fiscal stimulus, whilst the UK is said to be faltering thanks to a government “cutting too far and too fast”. It is time to debunk this nonsense.Let me start by saying I think Keynes was a great economist. His insights into the creation of money, inflation, and growth are important. All mainstream political parties are heir to his traditions in several respects. All agree that the state should borrow to offset a fall in demand in a recession. All agree that there needs to be controls over money and credit creation with a monopoly money system organised by the state. The Central Bank has to decide on overall levels of money and credit. They do not, however, tend to follow his precepts in a boom, when they ought to be asking the state to control spending and repay debt.

463. Vince Cable's latest stuff on the economy is a pathetic waste of time | Telegraph Blogs
The coincidence of timing really could not have been more perfect. Vince Cable chose this morning to unveil the British Business Bank that his department is working up. The Business Secretary is an interventionist who thinks the government (already spending 43.3 per cent of GDP) is not doing enough for the economy. As Vince was burbling on in a radio interview about his department getting involved in the tunnel-digging industry and much else besides, a report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was also landing. It exposed the failure of the government's previous great interventionist initiative, the Regional Growth Fund. When the fund was launched by Nick Clegg he set a target of "delivering" 36,800 jobs, by doling out £1.4bn to companies. As Clive Aslett said the other day: you know a policy is a lemon when you hear Clegg announcing it. And so it has transpired. The symbol of the Regional Growth Fund might as well be a small, ellipsoidal, yellow citrus fruit. The PAC report reveals that so far the fund has only created 2,400 jobs. Only £60 million has reached front-line businesses with £470 million "parked" with intermediary bodies such as local authorities and quangos who are working out what to do with it.
