417. Ex-Australian PM John Howard sticks it to the greenies – Telegraph Blogs

418. Texas booms while California busts | Mark Hemingway | Special Reports | Washington Examiner
Among the states, it has become clear there are two competing visions of political economy in America, embodied by California and Texas. One vision involves the economic devastation that comes of an overregulated economy. The other reveals the prosperity unleashed by smaller government. Broadly speaking, the two states have many similarities. They have diverse...

419. The EU seeks more austerity and less growth
Several contributors want to hear more about the many ways in which the EU affects or controls our lives. There are all too many ways, following years of EU directives and regulations, based on the huge powers transferred in The Treaties of Rome, Nice, Amsterdam and Lisbon, to name but four that rarely get mentioned. In recent years the EU has been granted large new powers to regulate banks and financial institutions. This week-end reports ciruclated that the EU is now considering imposing capital surcharges of as much as 10% of a bank’s assets on EU large banks on top of the minimum 7% capital ratio required already. The aim is to stop EU banks getting into the mess they got into in the 2008-12 period. That is a worthy aim, but this remedy does not seem to be based on any sensible analysis of why various large EU banks got into difficulties in that period or what is needed to get us out of the mess. There is little recognition that Central Banks and regulators got it wrong as well as the commercial banks, producing a toxic mixture.

422. Greenpeace and The Guardian: yet again, sticking up for the bad guys – Telegraph Blogs
When is a scandal not a scandal? When it comes via Greenpeace and is splashed over the front page of The Guardian, I'd say. While obviously I'm delighted that The Guardian and Greenpeace think I'm so powerful that I have the ability to effect a 180 degree shift in government onshore wind policy just by the mere threat of standing in a by-election, I do think a little examination of news priorities might be in order here.In an op-ed for tomorrow's Daily Telegraph (which will probably appear online later this evening), I explain – not for the first time: but hey repetition is always useful if you want to get your idea across – why it was that I chose to stand in Corby as the anti-wind farm candidate. It's because I honestly believe that the Great Wind Energy Scam is by far the greatest scandal of our age. As I've argued time and again, in articles like this, this, this, and this, the wind industry is a very expensive solution to a non-existent problem.

423. Osbrown economics has failed. What next? - Telegraph
It is not working, is it? There has been almost no growth for two years. Output is still below the pre-crisis peak.Ministers might say they are “paying down our debts”, but they keep adding an extra £100 billion plus to them every year.So big has the gap become between what government spends and what it takes in tax, by 2015 George Osborne will have presided over the largest Keynesian fiscal stimulus in our history. With ultra-low interest rates and endless rounds of QE [quantitative easing], he will have overseen a massive monetary stimulus, too.So much stimulus, yet so little to show for it – besides more debt.Should we be surprised? No, actually. If you continue to run the economy the way that Gordon Brown did when he landed us in this mess, you are likely to remain there.

424. White Wednesday changed politics utterly: I'll be celebrating the anniversary with a reunion in Oxford | Daniel Hannan, Daily Telegraph Blogs
The key date in modern British politics is 16 September 1992: the day the pound dropped out of the ERM. Much of what has happened since needs to be understood in the context of the damage done to the Conservatives and the way in which Labour benefited, despite itself, from the.economic recovery that began once sterling was unshackled. It’s worth reminding ourselves of what took place. The ERM had existed since 1979 and, by the late 1980s, was seen as a transitional phase on the way to monetary union. It takes an effort of will to recall quite how solidly the British Establishment, in those days, wanted to be part of the single currency. The CBI, the TUC, most newspapers (including Max Hastings’ Daily Telegraph), the Labour and Lib Dem parties: all called for ERM membership as a prelude to EMU.Margaret Thatcher had her doubts: she disliked the implications for sovereignty, and felt in her bones that the scheme was unsound economically.

425. Lambeth Labour face further questions over taxpayer-funded propaganda Left Watch
Lambeth Council - whose high taxes I have the misfortune of paying - have a long track record of propaganda at taxpayers' expense. In the past they have run poster campaigns making political attacks on austerity and welfare reform, and published costly newspapers attacking the Government, all the while complaining that they don't have enough money for actual services. This time, they've sunk even lower - which by the standards displayed so far is pretty low indeed. A new series of leaflets and posters seeks to scaremonger about changes to the fire service - presenting as a news headline a completely fabricated story about children dying in a Lambeth school fire.

426. Foster parents 'stigmatised and slandered’ for being members of Ukip - Telegraph
A couple had their three foster children taken away by a council on the grounds that their membership of the UK Independence Party meant that they supported racist policies. The husband and wife, who have been fostering for nearly seven years, said they were made to feel like criminals when a social worker told them that their views on immigration made them unsuitable carers.Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the couple said they feared that there was a black mark against their name and they would not be able to foster again.Last night campaigners representing foster parents described the decision as “ridiculous” and warned that it could deter other prospective foster parents from volunteering.Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip, described the actions of Rotherham borough council as “a bloody outrage” and “political prejudice of the very worst kind”.A spokesman for Rotherham metropolitan borough council said last night: “After a group of sibling children were placed with agency foster carers, issues were raised regarding the long-term suitability of the carers for these particular children.

427. Just why is Tory MP Tim Yeo so passionate about green issues? – Telegraph Blogs
For those who've missed it, Tim Yeo MP has been engaged in an online debate at the Centre For Policy Studies with former chancellor Lord Lawson on the subject "Is there an economic case for going green in an age of austerity"? As you'd perhaps expect from a man named "Politician of the Year" at the inaugural 2011 Green Business Awards, Yeo very much believes there is. We'll examine more closely why a Tory MP might feel so strongly about this in a moment. But let's first see what Lord Lawson has to say:

428. New Labour brought back slums and illiteracy, betraying Old Labour's legacy – Telegraph...
It is not unusual these days to hear something dispiriting or annoying on the BBC’s Today Programme (although it is still compulsive listening) but I was unusually shocked to hear last week a reporter’s account of conditions in Slough. She had accompanied a inspector from the borough council tracking down unauthorised buildings from wooden sheds to substantial breeze block buildings in back gardens of mainly terraced houses. These were it seemed, rented by a new generation of Rachmans to people living with little or no access to washing or toilet facilities.

429. Britain once had the greatest Civil Service in the world. Then along came New Labour –...
For some time I have found myself driven to the conclusion that not all the cock-ups of this Government are the responsibility of the politicians. Of course, most are. It must have been solely the decision of the Prime Minister to blame his country, that is our country, for most of the problems afflicting the world today, but I fear that the Civil Service has a hand in some of these unfortunate escapades.Sadly, I think that during the NuLab years great damage was done to the Civil Service.

431. Nick Clegg's bigotry is holding back our recovery - Telegraph Blogs
Nick Clegg has a low opinion of his fellow countrymen. True, he withdrew his claim that opponents of same-sex marriage were 'bigots' – though contriving to do so in a way that seemed at once sly and half-arsed. But he stands by his assertion that Eurosceptics are 'infantile'.Around 45 per cent of the population oppose same-sex marriage, and I'd be surprised if every single one of them, from John Sentamu downwards, were actuated by an irrational dislike of gay people. Then again, what do I know? When it comes to opponents of the Brussels racket, though, I'm pretty confident that most people have well-founded economic, democratic and localist objections. The Deputy PM doesn't pause to consider this possibility. In his mind, only the 28 per cent of…

432. Wind Industry Big Lies no 1: fossil fuels are more 'subsidised' than renewables –...
Is Labour MP Barry Gardiner vilely dishonest or just incredibly stupid? Personally – since he appears to be a litigious sort of fellow – I'm plumping for the latter. That's why, I think it's quite possible that when he was at his public school Haileybury his nickname was "Dork Brain." (Though I have no more evidence for this than Gardiner does for most of his hysterical views on climate change)But I leave you to draw your own conclusions after his recent claim, in an interview with Energy Live news, that the Coalition is favouring fossil fuel energy over wind energy through generous subsidies. (H/T Bishop Hill)
