306. Apple to unveil 'digital textbook tools' - Telegraph
Apple is expected to announce a new tool for creating textbooks in a bid to digitally overhaul the way students learn.According to reports, the education event, which Apple has scheduled for this Thursday in New York, will see the company announce a new way to create textbooks which can be viewed on an iPhone or iPad.Rather than become a textbook publisher, Apple will announce software for creating ebooks that is similar to its GarageBand music software. The software would make creating an ebook far simpler than it is at present, Ars Technica reported.

307. Who governs England?
Assuming Scotland votes to stay in our union this September, we will find devolution back on the agenda soon afterwards. All three main parties have promised more powers for Scotland. All three will I am sure wish to honour that pledge. This time it will not be possible to duck the issue of who governs England? It will be too unfair for Westminster to carry on as if nothing had happened with respect to the government of England, whilst the rest of the UK led by Scotland gets yet more powers for self government in their own Parliament and Assemblies. The SNP agrees with me about this. The SNP does not think their MPs at Westminster should settle matters for England that are settled for Scotland in the Scottish parliament.

308. Matthew Sinclair: Abolish the EHRC, cancel high speed rail, cut business subsidies - how to save...
The largest savings to be found in the public sector tend to be in the biggest budgets: welfare payments and remuneration for staff. However it is also important to look at other, smaller budgets where it is possible to make cuts that don’t affect households in the same way. Any savings there will make the overall fiscal austerity package easier for families to bear. In this article I have looked at six: a further quango to abolish; cutting subsidies to business; freezing the foreign aid budget; cancelling high speed rail; and scrapping the Green Investment Bank.

310. Double standards?
Today I wish to contrast the way politicians and some in the press respond to bad conduct in banking and in healthcare. It seems to me that we overdo the allegations and the expression of revulsion when bad bankers are revealed, whilst taking an altogether more relaxed attitude to healthcare errors.Barclays has recently been fined Ł290 million. It has admitted that some traders acted in a way designed to promote the bank’s and their own personal interests which sought to distort an interest rate in the markets. The traders have all been fired and are the subject of regulatory and criminal investigation to see if further action should be taken against any of them under the law.

311. Daily Kos: This week in science: Serious as a heart attack
Just after Christmas I had some sharp stomach cramps, not unlike indigestion. Over the last year I've lost some fat, put on some muscle, and greatly improved my aerobic capacity. During the holidays I worked out extra hard to max out the benefit of eating a lot of rich food. So the likely culprit was GERD, an ulcer, or maybe even a hernia. But just to be safe, a number of tests were ordered. This week one of those specialists, a cardiologist, laid it on me: a mild heart attack.

312. With The `Transgender` Movement, Liberalism Has Finally Descended Into Total Madness...
The Department of Education is very good at demonstrating why it shouldn’t exist. It put on its most convincing display this week when it ruled — you know, like a court, except it’s not a court — that Illinois’ largest school district violated the “civil rights” of a gender-confused boy by not letting him use the girl’s locker room. The school district now has 30 days to force underage females to change in front of the “transgender” student, or it will lose funding. Clearly, this is the role our Founders envisioned for the federal government.I have a few points I’d like to make about this case. Let’s go through them one by one.1. Barack Obama is facilitating the sexual abuse of underage children.

317. The Islamist 'Trojan Horse' Plot: Why Lessons Won't Be Learned
"No evidence of a conspiracy". Do you remember that reassuring phrase? You should because it was being enthusiastically bandied about in the left-leaning media (led, of course, by the BBC) less than a week ago - as the pull-out headline quote from local headteacher Ian Kershaw's "independent" report into the Birmingham schools Islamist Trojan Horse plot.Elsewhere in the report, Kershaw (most definitely not to be confused with the distinguished Hitler historian) conceded that anxiety at Birmingham City Council about perceived racism or Islamophobia may have contributed to the problem. But in the main Kershaw's conclusions were optimistic.

319. Going for growth – deregulation
Past governments and the present government speak the language of deregulation, but end up regulating more.Opponents always try to blame deregulators for whatever ills in society regulation was trying to cure. Sensible deregulators no more want fraud, credit bubbles, unsafe factories or bad employers than anyone else. There are two main issues. How effective is each regulation – does it really reduce the incidence of the ill you dislike? Is the cumulative burden of all the regulation tolerable, or does the burden in turn create worse ills like too few jobs and lower living standards?
