290. Center for Consumer Freedom – Philly Mayor’s New Soda-Tax Proposal Is Plain Nutters
We’re sure Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has gotten more than his fair share of playground teasing for his last name, but with his new proposal to tax soda, he’s certainly living up to it. Yesterday, in front of an unhappy city council, he announced a misguided pitch to reintroduce a two-cents-per-ounce excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. But his memory must be short: Just one year ago, a nearly identical tax on soda fizzled, thanks to Philadelphians tired of politicians using “sin taxes” on snacks to plug budget shortfalls.Philadelphia’s public schools are facing a $629 million education budget gap, but Mayor Nutter’s plan to solve the problem partially through a tax on sugary drinks is a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. Apparently the mayor and other tax advocates believe it will pull the double whammy of swelling city coffers while slimming citizens’ waistlines. But this wrongheaded tax has been tried before – with miserable results.

291. Gordon Brown cancels a UN press conference after just one reporter turns up - Telegraph
Gordon Brown learns the hard way that when you are no longer in office, it can be tough to draw a crowd.A press conference by the former Prime Minister at the United Nations in New York was cancelled this week when not enough journalists turned up to hear him speak.Mr Brown, who has recently been named the UN special envoy for global education, was at the United Nations General Assembly delivering a speech about a new UN initiative to put more children through school. He was scheduled to address reporters at 4pm on Wednesday to discuss the project, but unfortunately just one journalist - a reporter from the Daily Telegraph - arrived for his briefing.

292. Entrepreneurs still on strike
Mr Brown left the Coalition government a nasty posion pill. He put Income tax (and NI) up to 52% on top rate payers, and he raised National Insurance, the tax on jobs. The incoming goverment moved a little to take some of the sting out of the NI, but left the high top rate of Income Tax in place. They then added to the problem by raising Mr Brown’s very competitive 18% rate of Capital Gains Tax to 28%.

293. How an Oxford degree - PPE - created a robotic governing class » The Spectator
If graduates from an architecture school designed buildings that were unfit for human habitation or doctors from a university’s medical faculty left death in their wake, their teachers would worry. The graduates of Oxford’s Politics, Philosophy and Economics course form the largest single component of the most despised generation of politicians since the Great Reform Act. Yet their old university does not show a twinge of concern.

294. What has happened to deregulation?
One of the promises of Conservatives in Opposition was to remove needless or burdensome regulations, to allow more people to set up and grow businesses.Such general promises are always popular, and many in business feel they do have to spend too much time and money on compliance with regulations which do not help them be safer, better or more honest.I drew up a set of policies before the 2001 election as Shadow DTI Secretary. I did it again for Michael Howard as his Shadow Deregulation Secretary, a post created to stress the importance of the task by giving it a seperate voice around the table. I did it again for David Cameron as part of the Economic Policy Review. Indeed, that single chapter swamped much else in the report, as the media thought it more interesting than the advice on general economic policy, transport, education and training, energy or pensions.

295. Global Warming Activists Don't Like It When You Follow The Money | The Daily Caller
Environmentalists like to claim skeptics are making money off hampering global warming regulations, but those same activists are making a lot of money promoting global warming alarmism.A recent video from The Guardian claims that there is little money or power to be gained from environmental activism. The money behind activism pales in comparison to those of their fossil fuel-financed opposition, according to the video. The video even claims that “most of the money in solar and wind power comes from savings to the consumer.”In the case of Al Gore, prominently featured in the video, the former vice president has levied his global warming activism from a net worth of $700,000 in 2000 into an estimated net worth of $172.5 million by 2015. He’s not alone in his financial endeavor.

296. Wind farms: even worse than we thought - Telegraph Blogs
The Global Warming Policy Foundation has produced yet another devastating report: this time on the economics of wind farms. Turns out they're even worse than we thought. Not only do the Bat Chomping Eco-Crucifixes (TM) ruin views, kill birds, cause bats to implode, destroy the British film industry, frighten horses, enrich rent-seeking toffs like David Cameron's father-in-law Sir Reginald Sheffield Bt, drive up electricity bills, kill jobs, create fuel poverty, cause old people to die of hypothermia, wipe out property values, drive people mad with strobing and noise pollution and enable smug liberal idiots to spout rubbish like "Oh, I don't mind them. Actually I think they're rather beautiful", but also by 2020 they're set to drive up consumer bills in the UK alone by Ł120 billion.

298. Sir Patrick Moore, proud patriot, would never have got a job in the modern BBC – Telegraph...
The highest possible compliment you could pay Sir Patrick Moore, who has died full of years and honour, is that he would have never got a job as a science presenter with the modern BBC.First, he was too talented – a veritable renaissance man. Sir Patrick was a handy spin bowler, a talented composer and a virtuoso xylophonist who played a version of "Anarchy in the UK" in front of the Queen at a Royal Variety Performance as well as once duetting with Albert Einstein on the piano.Second, he knew too much about science – real science: in his case astronomy, which he had studied with the obsession of an autodidact, as opposed to the faux science of global warming which is the obsession of all modern TV scientists.

299. Labour tramples on a young activist who wouldn't follow their script Left Watch
"Thursday 5th May 2011 was the proudest day of my life. I had just got elected as a Councillor for Wavertree Ward on Liverpool City Council. I was the youngest ever councillor in Liverpool, and beat Lib Dem Lord Storey who had served for 38 years. You called me on the Friday afternoon - to my absolute surprise - to congratulate me on my election win."So begins a heartfelt letter from Cllr Jake Morrison to Ed Miliband. Until this week, Cllr Morrison was a proud and enthusastic Labour activist - particularly since he received the personal call from his party leader he mentions above. But no longer. Jake Morrison has been suspended by Labour pending an investigation. The reason? He claims it's because he fell out with his local MP, much-touted rising star Luciana Berger. If so, this is a remarkably grubby tale of petty vendettas within the Labour Party.

300. Told you so: When discussing replacing the Human Rights Act with Sanity, be careful how you phrase it
I seem to remember in the not too distant past mentioning below an article on ConservativeHome or somewhere that we needed to be careful how we phrase it when discussing replacing the Human Rights act with something that has a bit more sanity to it (though I can’t currently find it).I knew this because I’d previously seen on Yahoo Answers (part of Yahoo, the 4th most popular website in the world) leftie idiots asking why UKIP want to revoke Human rights, after they’d had pretty much the same idea, which I got the best answer for correcting them..........

302. Obama: driving a green dagger into the heart of the American dream - Telegraph Blogs
When it comes to pinpointing the nadir of the Obama administration, future historians are going to suffer a serious case of option paralysis. Was it Benghazi? The NSA? His use of the IRS to harass the Tea party? The various scandals involving his black ops department, the EPA? Obamacare?Personally, though, I think the one they will eventually plump for is Obama's Climate Action Plan of June 25 2013. The economy, after all, is everything. Without an economy you can't afford a domestic policy, let alone a foreign policy. So you'd think the very last thing any president would do as his country began to show the first vague signs of slow – and quite possibly illusory – recovery after a long recession would be to jeopardise it with a whole new raft of utterly pointless regulation and wasteful government expenditure. Why it would be like seeing a man drowning and, instead of throwing him a life line tossing him a lead weight. But that's just what President Obama has done with today's Climate Action Plan whose gory details you can read here.

In an article for The Sunday Express Michael Gove has come out fighting after his difficult week. He reminds us of Labour's educational failures: Across-the-board failure: "Over the past 10 years this country has slipped from fourth in the world to 14th for the quality of our science education, seventh to 17th for literacy and eighth to 24th for maths." Poor children...

304. 'You've sided with the Right. No state school is going to touch you' – Telegraph Blogs
Does anyone know of any open-minded inner-city London schools who wouldn’t mind having a deputy who is a little Right-wing in her thinking? Hmmm, I didn’t think so.Having been given the cold shoulder by some schools and by many people working in the state sector, I resort to seeing a head hunter, specifically one who puts forward heads and deputies for jobs. I explain that I realise I might be a little difficult to place, that not all schools might want me, that it would take a school with very open-minded governors to take me on.
