81. Labour-run York City Council's contempt for residents | Local Government
Cllr Chris Steward a Conservative member of York City Council on the record of the Labour administrtion that pledged to "make consultation genuine"It was a simple promise when in its 2011 Local Election manifesto Labour in York said they ‘will make consultation genuine’, however predictably it is one they have not lived up to. In fact ‘not lived up to’ is one greatest understatements since Liam Bryne said there was ‘no money left’, the Labour councillors running York have taken ignoring residents’ wishes to new levels.

82. Tim Loughton announces the speeding up and simplification of the adoption system The Tory Diary
By Paul Goodman Follow Paul on Twitter Only 60 babies a year in need of adoption are being placed permanently with families, compared with four thousand in 1974. Overall, the number of adoptions has fallen by 8% since 2007. The average time between being taken into care and being adopted is two years and seven months - and there is now a record number of children in care. One of...

83. Jesse Norman MP: The Government needs to make the case for Big Society principles once again |...
Governments are instinctively nervous about policy assessments, and it’s not hard to see why. Policy assessments are asymmetric: if positive, they often add little politically to what was already known; if negative, they crystallise failure, to the inevitable embarrassment of those involved.Yet such assessments are a vital tool of political reflection and improvement in government. So, then, what assessment should we give to the Big Society?

84. Is there a solution to the Coalition's NHS problem? The Tory Diary
Up until the last election I had my doubts about the implications for other Whitehall budgets of the NHS spending pledge but I understood the politics. Cameron wanted to neutralise the NHS as an issue by spending more on it than could probably be afforded... but in doing so he could concentrate on other difficult areas of reform. That strategy was then thrown out of the window when Andrew Lansley introduced his reforms during the Coalition's breakneck phase. After spending long years in opposition cuddling up to the professions and saying there'd be no reorganisation (although Lansley claims he was transparent) we were suddenly embarking on a very big reorganisation. The professions are now at war with Mr Lansley and he's fighting back - accusing them of obsessing about their pay and perks.Nonetheless some Tories saw significant merit in the initial reform blueprint - notably Nick de Bois MP - but Lib Dem rebels led by Baroness Shirley Williams then got to work and diluted the reforms until the point they have become blunted and bureaucratic.

85. Another African-American Senator Sees the Truth and Changes Parties - @Jarkesy Political
Another African-American senator sees the truth and changes parties. When you stop to consider just how many conservative blacks there are in America today, it’s quite heartwarming. These folks are called all sorts of names by liberal white men and other blacks who also take up space on the left. That part is disheartening. However, these conservative blacks are by no means overwhelmed. They seem to have a strength that wells up from within them. Could it be that being right about what’s wrong in America is a blessing in and of itself? Ask the many black conservatives over at Move-On-Up. They could tell you.

88. Boris offers a positive Conservative alternative to Labour's mess on education | Local...
Boris Johnson's education enquiry and delivery plan are perhaps the first sign that the government is managing to move beyond sorting out Labour's mess to construct a positive Conservative alternative. There are several reasons why this is difficult, most connected with what I've described as the octopus of progressive education, which has got its tentacles and suckers into every Conservative initiative from the Bullock committee onwards. The academic boasting of his third-class degree at the Wellington Festival was just one recent example of a person opposed to Conservative values who had been given far too much influence, in his case, over the National Curriculum.

89. The Tories have gone astray – and I helped - Telegraph
Ever since 1997, the Conservative Party has put strategy above principle, with disastrous results. Are you one of those who thinks that there isn’t much to choose between the political parties these days? Are you crying out for politicians who say what they believe, rather than what they want people to hear? Well, I have a confession to make. I have spent much of my career in the political backroom, out of camera shot, out of sight. First a researcher for the Conservative Party machine, then a tour of duty in the bunker of No 10 for the last three Major years, followed by a few years advising Michael Howard and David Cameron. This was a period in which the Conservative Party had a political nervous breakdown, was committed, had care in the community, and then found its feet again.

90. If you want people to come to your party, make the invitation inviting - Telegraph
It's no wonder the Tories are losing members when Conservative associations appear to be stuck in the Fifties.Tonight we’re going to a party. Our friend Eleanor is having a Significant Birthday, so we’re off to Hackney to help her celebrate/commiserate. (Eleanor is a glass-half-full woman, so it will be the former.)There will be a party-within-a-party, too, made up of people who know Eleanor and one another for the same, increasingly peculiar, reason: we are all Conservative Party members. I wonder how many of the Hackney Tory Collective will be there? Fewer than we once were?Even true-blue Barnet, where I live now, has lost hundreds of members over the last few years. Paul Goodman, former Tory MP and editor of ConservativeHome, suggested on Wednesday that national membership has fallen from around 250,000 to around 100,000 since David Cameron became leader. Why? Does it matter? If so, what to do?Plenty of outraged readers will stop here, and start typing their answer to the first question into the comment box, or onto a sheet of note-paper. I’ve answered myself, they’ll say. Membership has fallen because (not since) David Cameron became leader.

92. Labour's claim of TfL "surplus cash" is nonsense | Local Government
The Labour Party have been busy campaigning outside tube stations today with the message that the fares increase is wrong as Boris Johnson already "takes more in fares from you than he needs." Boris supporters have also been outside tube stations with a leaflet which backs the tube upgrades that are taking place as key for economic growth.Commuters are being told by the Ken Livingstone campaign that TfL "has amassed hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus cash." Really? It looks to me from TfL's last Annual Report that there is debt of £6.3 billion and an annual interest bill of £400 million.

93. Heard the truth about the "Bedroom Tax"? It was Labour's idea | Ipswich...
In 2004 the Labour Government introduced nine pathfinder authorities for a new scheme of housing benefit called Local Housing Allowance. This replaced housing benefit for those in private sector rented accommodation. The LHA introduced the concept that claimants were entitled to a number of bedrooms based on their circumstances. When it was being debated in Parliament, Conservative MPs challenged the Government over its implementation in the private sector only. They asked if the Government planned to introduce it into the public rented sector. The Labour Government said:“We hope to implement a flat rate housing benefit system in the social sector, similar to that anticipated in the private rented sector to enable people in that sector to benefit from the choice and flexibility that the reforms can provide. We aim to extend our reforms to the social rented sector as soon as rent restructuring and increased choice have created an improved market.”So it was always the intention of the Labour Government to introduce reforms to the social rented sector, in the same way as they had introduced reforms to the private rented sector.

94. Anne McIntosh faces second deselection battle after spectacular falling out with local party -...
A senior Conservative MP is in a battle to avoid being deselected after a spectacular falling out with senior members of her local constituency party.Members of Thirsk and Malton Conservative association will meet this Autumn to decide whether effectively to sack their MP Anne McIntosh, who is a chairman of a Commons select committee, as their candidate for the 2015 general election. The party’s local executive board had decided not to re-adopt Miss McIntosh as its 2015 candidate in January but its decision was this week overturned by the Conservative Party’s national board which ordered another contest in September after a three month inquiry.Miss McIntosh survived a similar process in the same seat in 2009, when relations with her local party were said to have “irretrievably broken down”.

95. Labour controlled Camden council spends £186,877 on union officials | Local Government
Amidst all the debate about the £10 million a year the trade unions find to give to the Labour Party there should be some reflection as to why the unions have so much spare cash in the first place. It is because the salaries of 2,493 union officials are picked up by the taxpayer.Today the Conservatives are highlighting the £186,877 spent by Ed Miliband’s local council, Labour-controlled Camden, on full-time equivalent union officials from Unison and the GMB trade unions. These two unions alone have donated more than £8 million to Labour in the last two years.
