353. Thatcher Would Have Opposed Reckless Defection Says Right-Wing Group #CPC14
A pressure group founded by Margaret Thatcher has claimed that the former Prime Minister would not have endorced defections to UKIP if she were alive today. Conservative Way Forward (CWF), which Thatcher headed until her death in 2013, made the claims at a private event at party conference.

354. The governments approach to Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
Knowing how important many of you think this issue is, I reproduce below the government’s account of what it has done so far to change the immigration system:“The first ever permanent cap on non-EU work migrants has now been in place for a year. The limit has not been reached in any month since the cap came into effect, so the numbers are falling while necessary skilled workers are allowed in.We have also reformed the student visa system – the largest route of entry. 116 licences to colleges have been revoked and another 179 licenses suspended. The reforms include a new accreditation system for colleges; new rules on the standard of English required for students; new restrictions to limit students working and bringing dependants; and ending the post-study work option for all but the very brightest. The number of Tier 4 student visas issued has fallen by 19% in the second half of 2011, compared to the same period in 2010.

357. If the real Margaret Thatcher had been like Meryl Streep's Iron Lady, I wouldn't have supported...
Last week I saw the film The Iron Lady. I regret to say it confirmed all my worst fears from having seen the trailer some time ago. This is primarily a film about an old lady suffering from dementia. The actress, Ms Streep, is well made up to resemble Margaret Thatcher in both old age and her younger years and has acquired a number of her gestures and movements as well as some entirely new to me.There are other people depicted in the film whom I did not recognise and some who were vitally important to her during her time as Prime Minister who did not appear at all.If you have seen, or intend to see this film, remember that it uses the name and reputation of Margaret Thatcher to sell tickets, but it is not about the Margaret Thatcher whom I knew and served in government. Above all, do not believe that the portrayal of Denis Thatcher is anything like that devoted, humorous, thoughtful and wise man. That is drawn for the same purpose.

359. Owen Paterson Is Trolling David Cameron, But Could He Be Plotting a Run for Tory Leader?
Overshadowed by the noisy departure of Baroness Warsi, another recently liberated Conservative is causing problems for his former boss, albeit in a slightly more subtle manner. While Warsi's weapon of choice was the Sunday Times front page, Owen Paterson's chosen medium thus far has been Twitter. The former Environment Secretary has spent the weeks since he was sacked epically trolling the Prime Minister, and his other enemies for that matter, online.Only a few days after he was fired, Paterson announced that he would be delivering the 2nd Annual Lecture of the Global Warming Policy Foundation in October. The organisation is chaired by Lord Lawson, a long time critic of David Cameron, and is considerably more climate sceptic than the government Paterson has just left.

360. Stop aping Blair and learn modernising from Mrs Thatcher's traditional style, Lord Lawson tells...
David Cameron has ‘a lot to learn’ from Margaret Thatcher and should give up on trying to imitate Tony Blair, a senior Tory warned last night.Former Chancellor Lord Nigel Lawson, who served in the Thatcher governments of the 1980s, also fired a broadside at the current Chancellor, George Osborne. He said Mr Osborne should give up his wider strategy role and focus on the economy in the wake of this year’s disastrous Budget.Lord Lawson said the Prime Minister was too influenced by Mr Blair, whose leadership was characterised by an obsession with focus groups, and a series of bruising battles with his own party.

365. Ruth Porter: Innovation and flexibility - not nostalgia and mourning - will revive the regions...
Growing up in the north of England shaped me in many ways, small and large - but perhaps the most significant was the fierce appreciation it gave me for the dirt and mess of large cities. The sense of history, of chaos and disorder, in some ways is what brought me to live and work here in London. Whether I loved London as a conservative or whether loving London and Britain’s other great cities made me a conservative, I’m not sure. Around each corner is something unexpected, roads rarely run straight and grand design is nowhere to be seen, replaced instead by layer upon layer of adaptation

There were 13 to start with but two left before the end. They went seven to four against Cllr Evans.
