225. Roger Helmer MEP: The Man in Whitehall says no to local opposition to windfarms Comment
On January 9th I wrote a piece about the proposed wind-farm overlooking the historic battlefield of Naseby and I undertook to write to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP. I also promised to share his reply with you. I attach it below. Clearly Mr. Pickles is a very busy man, so he referred my letter to Sir Michael Pitt, Chief Executive of The Planning Inspectorate.Sir Michael writes with commendable courtesy. His mastery of mandarin-speak is exemplary. It is worthy of the BBC’s “Yes Minister”, so much so that I wonder if the BBC consulted him on the script. That being so, and in the interests of clarity and the avoidance of doubt, let me offer you my paraphrase in more earthy and vernacular terms. He is saying, in effect, that we local oiks, Luddites and Nimbies can do whatever we want, but it won’t make any difference and he won’t care a scrap.

226. Labour Backed £4-a-Day Pay for Mentally Disabled - Guy Fawkes' blog
In 2003 the Labour government supported allowing some companies to pay people with mental health problems £4-a-day to man assembly lines. A government paper from when Patricia Hewitt was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, which argues that that some so-called “therapeutic work” should not qualify for the minimum wage.

227. There is almost a fortnight until the budget. Osborne is in danger of losing control of it....
The BBC's website reminds us that "the Chancellor's budget secrets are meant to be totally secret before his speech" - and that following the 1947 budget Hugh Dalton resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer after it was discovered that he had leaked part of it. Which prompts the thought that Gordon Brown was lucky not be around in the late 1940s: walloping portions of his budgets were regularly trailed. So - let's be frank - is George Osborne. So much of his last autumn statement found its way into the press that John Bercow decided to extend its presentation to Parliament to three hours - "not least so I can hear whether the Chancellor of the Exchequer has anything to say in the Chamber about these matters that he hasn't already said in the media".

229. Ed Miliband's speech: nice delivery and a new "One Nation" theme - but no substance or indication of economic maturity | Left Watch - ConservativeHome
Ed Miliband finished delivering his big conference speech a short while ago. It was nicely delivered (impressively, Miliband spoke for more than an hour without notes), felt strong and purposeful, and had a positive message of solidarity: "One Nation". Indeed, Miliband said "One Nation" countless times, determined to drill home the message and audaciously take the label away from the Conservatives.

I hope you’re ready for “The Dollar Menu” to become the “The Dollar Thirty-Eight Menu”.When things on the dollar menu are $1.38, who does that hurt the most? Poor people. That’s what liberals just don’t understand. They say things that make you feel good then implement policy that is doomed for failure.

232. Who's top and bottom of the Yellow B**tards League table? Left Watch
By Matthew Barrett and Tim Montgomerie On Wednesday, we reported that Tory MPs at the 1922 Committee wanted to "get those yellow b**tards", in reference to Liberal Democrats who were criticising Andrew Lansley's NHS reforms, having voted for it before. In today's Mail on Sunday James Forsyth writes that 10 Downing Street is at the end of its tether in having to deal with...

233. The New Statesman's attempt to paint Sayeeda Warsi's Tory critics as racist Left Watch
If you don't think Sayeeda Warsi is an ideal Tory Chairman you are a racist. The allegation is not made directly - smears rarely are - but readers of the New Statesmen are left in little doubt. The New Statesman is not the only place where you can read similar suggestions. Monday's Independent, Ian Birrell in The Guardian and ex-Statesman hack James Macintyre have all tip-toed through not dissimilar territory. I've ignored it up until now - some of it directed to me and ConHome - because you hesitate to give legs to such sulphurous stuff but it's being repeated too often to ignore.Let me deal with the racist thing first. Run a poll of Tory members and you'll find that Priti Patel is one of their very favourite new MPs. They aren't interested in her ethnicity but love her straight-talking Tory politics. Similarly there is much enthusiasm in the grassroots for the likes of Sajid Javid MP, Paul Uppal MP and Shaun Bailey as future stars. At the last election non-White Tories were selected in many heartland seats.

234. Anyone for the John Redwood manifesto? | Tory MPs | ConservativeHome
It is by far the best blog written by any Tory MP. Each day - without fail - John Redwood offers a thoughtful reflection on a policy or strategic issue of the day. I suspect many ConHome readers are already regular readers but here is my selection of the former Welsh Secretary's wisdom as blogged by him in the last couple of months. My guess is that many Tory Party members wish that wisdom was more regularly embraced by those leading our party...

235. Peter Hoskin: Paul Ryan has at least tried to educate the American people about their debt...
How easy it is to scoff at Paul Ryan. He’s the most politically extreme Vice Presidential candidate in several generations. He’s the rockin’ Randian who spends his time tickling catfish and stalking around forests, bow-and-arrow in hand. He has come to prominence on the back of gruesome predictions about what the American public finances will look forty years from now. He is not my type of Republican and, given how his ‘Path to Prosperity’ budget plan polls, he probably isn’t America’s either. And so — scoff, scoff, scoff. But before we all choke ourselves in delight or despair, it’s worth watching the full series of videos that he released to accompany his original budget plan last year. Here we have twelve minutes of a politician speaking about his country’s public finances.

236. Peter Hoskin: Will we have cause to celebrate the Coalition in its landmark year of 2017? | ConservativeHome
Have you got a five-year diary to hand? And, perchance, a pen? Lovely, I thought you would. Now please flick forward to 2017 and draw a big circle around the whole of that year. Then add some stars, smiley faces, arrows; anything that will help it to stand out. You see, 2017 is something of landmark year for education. As we discovered yesterday, it will be the year when Michael Gove’s new English Baccalaureate examinations are first taken and marked. It will, we hope, be a year that slams another stake into the unholy monster that is grade inflation. But 2017 doesn’t just… actually, wait, have you got a highlighter instead? That might be better than a normal pen. After all, as I was saying, 2017 doesn’t just feature landmarks in education. It is currently expected to be the year when our structural deficit is finally whittled down to zero and turned into a fiscal surplus. It is also expected to be the year when all working-age benefit claimants will have moved onto Iain Duncan Smith’s Universal Credit. We may as well just pattern our diaries with fluorescent yellow ink now.

Carleigh O'Connell had heard the insults about her body before. So when the 14-year-old from a New Jersey seaside town heard from a friend that the words "carleighs ass" had been spray-painted on a cement block by the ocean, she wasn't surprised. What is surprising was the high...

240. Candidate fury at CCHQ campaign demands » Spectator Blogs
Conservative MPs and candidates are, it’s fair to say, pretty exhausted this afternoon after last-minute campaigning for the local and European elections and all-nighters watching the results come in. But with the Newark by-election drawing closer, they’re not flopping into their beds just yet. All candidates have been summoned to a 10am briefing in Newark on Sunday. They were only told on Monday that the meeting was taking place, and that it was compulsory, with Grant Shapps demanding a personal explanation from those who cannot make it.
