17. Joe Armitage: On entrepreneurship and tax cuts, David Cameron is another Margaret Thatcher | ConservativeHome
Joe Armitage is Chairman of Medway Conservative Future and Deputy Chairman (Political), Rochester East Conservatives. He’s also on a gap year interning for a Conservative MP. Follow him on Twitter. On the one hand, some people claim that David Cameron and Margaret Thatcher are cut from the same cloth. The Leader of the Opposition even went so far as to say Cameron was a “Child of Thatcher.” On the other, there are those within the Conservative Party who believe that David Cameron is not a conservative, that his policies are centrist and that he has abandoned conservatism: this, to me, is nonsense. The policies of the Coalition Government have produced encouraging results such as job and business creation, but they’ve also brought about an atmosphere which fosters growth, and it’s inevitable that the green shoots will appear.Ed Miliband recently told the Daily Telegraph that “Thatcher created an era of aspiration". It’s true, she did - but I also believe in decades to come, it will be said of Mr Cameron that he, too, is responsible for creation an era of aspiration. When you look at the mission of Lady Thatcher’s government and compare that mission to that of David Cameron’s government, there are many similarities. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting hard work, self-determination and expunging Britain’s dependency culture. That is also true of Lady Thatcher’s aim of self-reliance, individualism and rolling back the state in accordance with negative freedom. When you look at the policies of this Government and compare them to Lady Thatcher’s, one can see that the challenges are very similar challenges. In 1979, when the first Thatcher Government came to power, the highest rate of corporation tax was 52% and the highest Income Tax threshold was a hernia-inducing 83%. These levels of tax were discoursing growth, aspiration and self-development. When David Cameron’s government came to power, corporation tax was 28% and income tax was at 50% - obviously far lower than under Callaghan but too high nonetheless.

18. Global Warming 'Skeptics' Political Sway From UK To India | The Daily Caller
Skepticism of global warming may be more widespread than it is portrayed in the media, with nearly half of British lawmakers being labelled as climate “skeptics” and India’s prime minister casting doubt on claims of man-made global warming.A special report by PR Week shows that a vast majority of conservative members of UK Parliament are that mankind is the main driver behind global temperature rises. While a slight majority (51 percent) of members of parliament (MPs) say that global warming “is largely man made” and an established fact, nearly three quarters of conservative MPs disagree.PR Week reports that 53 percent of conservative MPs agree with the statement that it “has not yet been conclusively proved that climate change is man made.” Another 18 percent of conservative MPs say “man-made climate change is environmentalist propaganda”.

19. (5/10) The next phase of modernisation needs to focus on the economy and blue collar Britain...
Last week in Birmingham I presented a ten step plan to deliver the first Conservative majority since 1992. The plan is summarised on the new StrongAndCompassionate.com website. Parts one, two, three and four have already been published.(Step 5) The next phase of Conservative modernisation must blend traditional Tory causes with a commitment to blue collar, striving BritainModernisation is an ugly word in some Tory minds but any student of recent Tory election results cannot credibly argue that the Conservative Party doesn’t need to change. The real choice isn’t between those who want change and those who don’t but between different kinds of modernisers and the scale of modernisation that might still be necessary. This ConservativeHome Majority Project argues that modernisation is at best half done. We added 4% to our share of the vote at the last election and we need to add at least another 4% at the next in order to be sure of winning a majority. We argue that modernisation up until now has had four serious flaws.

20. If it carries on like this, the review of EU powers is set to fail - and here are four reasons...
When a Government announcement on the EU causes Liberal Democrats to celebrate and Conservative backbenchers to complain, it is never a good sign for eurosceptics. So it is with the newly published first batch of Balance of Competences (BoC) Reviews, which assess six areas of powers split between Brussels and Westminster. In short, the yellows are cheering while the backbenches are spitting blood because the reports have come back with the conclusion that the balance of powers on tax, foreign policy, the single market, healthcare, aid and food safety is "broadly correct".While the finding is absurd, it is no great surprise given who is running it and how it is run. There are four major problems with the BoC process, so far as I can tell.....

22. The two articles that every pro-Obama British Tory should read International
I've made my own brief case for Mitt Romney in today's Times (£). I've argued that he's far different from the demonised caricature of the Democrat ad campaign. Instead he's better-placed to end the gridlock in Washington that is preventing America from facing up to its fiscal challenges. I give examples of the ways in which Barack Obama is far from the uniting figure that is sometimes suggested.Posted below are some of the best chunks of writing on the American election. I particularly recommend the top two quotes from David Frum and Ross Douthat - especially to any British Conservative who is supportive of Barack Obama...

By Tim Montgomerie Follow Tim on Twitter. I don't quite believe David Campbell Bannerman's reasons for joining the Conservative Party but his defection (on Tuesday) was no less welcome for that. 25. Wisconsin Sheriff David Clarke kicks some liberal butt at NRA convention - Allen B. West -...
Wisconsin Sheriff David Clarke will surely have a target on his back now after his superb comments at the annual NRA convention in Indianapolis. As reported by The Blaze, Clarke revealed the seven words he would add to the Second Amendment: “Keep your hands off our guns, dammit.” What Sheriff Clarke again demonstrates is for conservatives it’s nothing to do with race — it’s all about individual character.

27. Steve Barclay MP: Conservative Voice is for everyone on the centre right who wants to reach out...
Yesterday morning I was delighted to join the launch of Conservative Voice, a new group founded by Don Porter, alongside fellow MPs Liam Fox, David Davis, Dom Raab and Robert Halfon.Political party membership is falling across the board and progressively ageing. A key challenge is therefore how we engage and enthuse those who hold right of centre views but who do not currently identify with the Conservative Party. In doing this, the focus of Conservative Voice is unashamedly to secure more elected Tory representatives across all levels of local and national government and - above all - to defeat Labour at the next election.

One of the world's leading conservative philosophers, Roger Scruton, and one of Britain's leading historians are joining Britain's oldest conservative think tank, the Bow Group, as senior patrons. The news comes despite the Conservative Party's recent attacks on the Bow Group in the Telegraph newspaper, a strategy that has been closely linked to Tory Party Chairman Grant Shapps and his bag carrier Paul Abbott, who are known to be opposed to traditional conservative values.

29. Cutting the number of MPs.
I voted to reduce the number of MPs by 50 when it last came up, and am willing to do so again when the boundary review is complete. I read that some Lib Dems are no longer happy about this Coalition policy.I voted for it because I think public spending has to be reduced and it seemed like a good idea to start with a cut in Parliament, to show we can do more for less. We need to raise public sector produtivity across the board, so Parliament should show how.

30. Ken Livingstone begins his 'kick Cameron, oust Boris' campaign The Tory Diary
Boris Johnson is loved by ConHome readers. In our end-year readers' survey he came second only to Margaret Thatcher as the politician that members felt, ideologically, closest to. This is understandable given his views on Europe, tax and crime but Boris is no cardboard cut-out Tory. His support for an immigration amnesty and a much higher minimum wage are examples of his very independent worldview. Nonetheless he topped a slightly frivolous poll we ran asking who members would vote for if there was a party leadership race tomorrow. Boris Johnson won 34% against William Hague's 26%. Gove won 18%, Osborne 13%, Jeremy Hunt 5% and Theresa May 3%.Just before Christmas the London Evening Standard was leaked a Labour tactics document which set out the strategy of painting Boris Johnson as a "true blue" Tory. Labour literature will portray Boris as "a Conservative mayor who meets bankers more than police; describes his £250,000-a-year second salary as 'chicken feed' but does not hesitate to raise fares". Those themes were repeated in Livingstone's Guardian piece.Boris has a long list of achievements and a reputation for independence. His optimism is also a huge contrast with Ken Livingstone's snarling manner.

31. Deliberate, defamatory lies from the Mail on Sunday | Roger Helmer MEP
On June 1st, the Mail on Sunday published what purported to be a report on my interview with their Political Editor Simon Walters. In fact, the piece bore little or no relation to our interview, and appears to be simply a pre-cooked hatchet job, packed with deliberate and defamatory lies. Back from his overseas trip (for which the Prime Minister made an excellent defence in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph) David Cameron will today launch the Conservative Party's local election campaign. His key message is the one at the top of this post:"If you look at what Labour did to our country why on Earth would you let them anywhere near your council?"A very, very good question.
