161. The EU Lisbon Treaty: Gordon Brown Surrenders Britain's Sovereignty
Prime Minister Gordon Brown's decision to reject a referendum on the new European Union Reform Treaty (Treaty of Lisbon) should be viewed as one of the biggest acts of political betrayal in modern British history. Despite a rebellion by 29 of its own backbenchers, the Labour-led government defeated a Conservative proposal to hold a popular vote on the Lisbon Treaty by 311 votes to 248 in the House of Commons on March 5. Brown's refusal to support a referendum represented a stunning reversal of the government's 2005 manifesto pledge to hold a plebiscite on the European Constitution.

162. How police waged a 'guerrilla war' on ministers: Union in Plebgate storm funded secret campaign over pay reforms
The police union paid a PR firm for advice on using ‘guerrilla tactics’ against ministers just weeks before the Plebgate scandal. The media strategy also called for a military-style ‘blitzkrieg’ to halt government plans to reform pay and conditions for officers. The secret plot was laid down in a £10,000-a-month contract handed to the public relations company by the Police Federation. The revelation will worsen relations between the union’s officials and the Conservative Party, which believes Andrew Mitchell was ‘stitched up’ in the September 2012 Plebgate affair.

163. Livingstone wasn't moved to tears by real Londoners supporting his candidacy. They were actors....
The headline above tells the story.Labour Uncut's Atu Hatwal has highlighted it today. It was in yesterday's Guardian diary but seems to have got little traction. As Hatwal writes:"At the time the explanation given to reporters was that Ken was moved by the genuine words of Londoners and the responsibility he felt to win the election for them.Stirring stuff. Shame it was rubbish."

166. Ed Balls so badly wants the Government to fail, he can't even celebrate Britain's successes
The other day I picked out an example of Labour's miserablism: "Ed Balls' apparent enthusiasm when the economic data is poor, and his deflation when the figures improve" It's a sad fact that Balls can barely contain his desire for things to go wrong in the economy so that he can promote himself on the back of a crisis. Given the...

Eric Pickles isn't afraid to pick on people of his own size - in political terms, that is. I cite as evidence his long-rolling row with his Cabinet colleague Caroline Spelman over waste collection, and what the Communities Secretary has splendidly labelled the right of every Englishman and women to have the remnants of their chicken tikka masala collected weekly. But he may have gone a bit too far yesterday. Today's Daily Mail reports a clash with the Treasury.

169. Boom: This TX Rep Just Slammed Main Stream Media
Lamar Smith (R-TX) spoke on the House floor for one minute citing a recent Rasmussen poll of 1,000 likely voters who say that media bias is a bigger problem in today’s politics than big campaign contributions. Liberals have been successful in deceiving the masses instead of reporting the truth. They cherry-pick the issues and events that fit the current administration’s agenda. Until we have more truth seekers in the media, rather than political ideologues, they will continue to influence public opinion.

171. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.

173. David Cameron rushes Commons EU referendum vote to Monday as Tory revolt grows | Mail Online
Tory Eurosceptics today hit out at the 'political elite' seeking to block a referendum on Britain's relationship with Europe. As it emerged that Labour would join the Coalition in ordering its MPs to oppose the referendum vote on Monday, a senior backbencher accused political leaders of not allowing the public to 'have their say'.The Conservative high command was said to be in 'complete panic' as Eurosceptics began to turn on the 'out of touch' David Cameron.Ukip leader Nigel Farage described the situation, which has left Tory MPs 'bloody mutinous', as 'the people versus the politicians'........Tory MPs said the whips’ office was in ‘complete panic’ about the impending vote as a string of heavyweight MPs signalled their support for a referendum. More MPs are expected to sign the motion overnight. Some 58 MPs, including 46 Tories, signed up in support – far more than the Government expected.Signatories include the former leadership contender David Davis, the influential chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee Graham Brady, the former Cabinet minister John Redwood and the millionaire MP Zac Goldsmith.........Senior Tories are urging Mr Cameron to treat the vote in a similar way to a debate earlier this year on giving prisoners the vote, when front bench MPs were allowed to abstain. Some are privately questioning why the Prime Minister has turned next week’s vote into a defining show of strength, risking resignations from the Government and the biggest rebellion of the Parliament.Tory MP Philip Davies warned Mr Cameron would do lasting damage to the Conservative Party if he tries to prevent MPs voting for a referendum.‘They seem to have been thrown into complete panic, which does make you wonder how in touch they are with the mood of the party, because this has been coming for a long time,’ he said.‘Trying to dragoon people on a three-line whip will cause a great deal of resentment within the party and leave the public – who support a referendum on Europe – completely mystified about what we stand for.’.......Mark Pritchard, secretary of the 1922 committee of backbench Tory MPs, warned that it would be dangerous for the ‘political elite’ to be seen to be blocking public demand for a referendum again.Leading eurosceptic Conservative MP Bill Cash said: 'The prospect of an intervention by the coalition Government is beyond belief.'Why should the Government prevent the British people from having their say, especially when the European project is quite clearly failing?

By Tim Montgomerie: My favourite tweet of yesterday came from the Labour MP Jamie Reed: It's of course right that an American president gets the warmest of welcomes from the British state. 175. Ian Blair's attack on police reform is misguided | Local Government
Peter Walker, a former Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire, on the flawed claims from Lord Blair that police independence is under threatI have liked and respected Lord Ian Blair since I shared a classroom with him on the Police Senior Command Course almost twenty years ago. It was clear even then that he was destined for the very top of the service. However, I simply do not agree with his views on the Police Reform Programme.Writing in the New Statesman recently, Lord Blair declared "Police independence is under threat" and gave four reasons for his views. I truly believe each to be wrong.Firstly, he says that "a series of connected decisions" reinforce the view "the main job of the Police is to catch criminals", which he goes on to criticise.

For roughly ten years you have been able to take your telephone number with you when you change phone provider – imagine if you could take your bank account number with you if you decide to change your banker?Oftel, under the leadership of Sir Don Cruickshank from 1993-98, saw through legislation that forced telephone companies to allow customers to transfer their telephone number from one company to another with ease. Now the Treasury Select Committee, of which I am a member, has discussed the possibility of requiring banks to do the same.
