129. Cameron convenes Inner Tory Cabinet as Number 10 starts to realise that ConHome was correct...
Fascinating scoop from James Forsyth in the Mail on Sunday. The Spectator's Political Editor reveals that David Cameron gathered together a special 'secret seven' group of Conservative Cabinet ministers before the recent Lords vote and rebellion. The meeting may turn out to be a one off but let us hope not. It is an encouraging sign that the Tory leader may be enlarging his advisory circle which up until now has been built around (1) an ultra-loyalist kitchen cabinet, including many lifetime friends; (2) a very special bilateral relationship with George Osborne; (3) more-or-less monthly dinners with William Hague and Mr Osborne and; (4) most significantly, via The Quad - where the Liberal Democrats are as well represented as Conservatives.

130. Scottish Conservatives launch new logo and website at National Convention The Tory Diary
The Scottish Conservatives have launched a new party logo. The new logo has a distinctly Scottish Unionist tone - it has the dark blue of the Saltire, with the red of the Union Flag. It replaces the previous green tree logo, which was a variation of the national Conservative logo.

131. Owen Paterson makes his bid for the Iron Throne
Today Owen Paterson declared war on the Vichy wing of the Conservative party by telling them exactly like it is: Britain's ongoing membership of the EU is a disaster; we'd be much better off out; the only reason we ever joined it in the first place is because the founding fathers of the EU lied about their true intentions, aided and abetted by equally mendacious useful idiots like Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan, Harold Wilson and Edward Heath. If we'd known what we were getting ourselves into we would never have given up our sovereignty; and we'd all be a lot freer and richer as a result.

132. European criminal justice and the sovereignty of the British people
Yesterday Parliament debated whether to opt back in to 35 of the EU Criminal Justice measures. We have recently rightly opted out of all 135 measures, as we were entitled do under our version of the centralising Lisbon Treaty. I and others told Parliament why we do not wish to opt back in to anything.

133. How Blair conned the Tory Party into selling its soul | Mail Online
The question of why the Conservative Party so infrequently exhibits true conservative values is driving many Tory backbenchers to distraction. But I believe the answer to this conundrum can be found in one of the most remarkable political speeches of my lifetime — delivered by Tony Blair 13 years ago. On a glittering early autumn day at Bournemouth in September 1999, he had come to bury the Tory Party. His speech about the ‘Forces of Conservatism’ was a full-blooded declaration of war not on a party, but on an entire political philosophy — one that supported, as he put it, ‘fox-hunting, Pinochet and hereditary peers’. It was a vicious and cynical caricature.

134. Chloe Smith MP warns that average family's mortgage bill could be £5,000 higher under Labour...
Conservative HQ issued a new dossier overnight that argues that Labour frontbenchers have been making reckless spending commitments that would add £326 billion to the national debt over the next five years compared to the Governments plans. Adding that level of borrowing to Britain's existing borrowings CCHQ suggests that we could be in...

135. Boris Johnson tells David Cameron to 'stop pussyfooting around' and fix the economy - Telegraph
Boris Johnson has told David Cameron to stop pussyfooting around on the economy as he confirms for first time he is considering returning to Parliament. The Mayor of London took advantage of his popularity following the Olympics to deliver an economics lesson to Mr Cameron, urging him to fund a series of major building projects to help drive jobs and growth.Mr Johnson dismissed as "nonsense" the idea that he could return to the House of Commons while in his current post. But, in words which will fuel already heated speculation about his future ambitions, he said he had "honestly" yet to decide whether he would seek to become an MP again when his term in office ends in 2016.Mr Johnson is favourite among Tory activists to replace Mr Cameron as Conservative leader, with his absence from the Commons seen as his biggest impediment.A new poll of Labour supporters today found that Mr Johnson is feared as a "tougher opponent" for Ed Miliband, the Leader of the Opposition, than the Prime Minister.

136. James Wharton MP: How Labour and the LibDems filibustered my EU referendum bill last night
Yesterday was the first day of the Committee stage of my EU Referendum Bill. Having passed its second reading not long ago, I was keen to get it into committee and make progress. The sooner it is back before the Commons for Report and can hopefully get through to the Lords the better. Sadly, however, some of the Labour members of the committee, and its only Lib Dem (Martin Horwood) set out to delay progress as much as they could.

138. Brian Monteith: Will the persecution of smokers ever stop under Conservatives?
In June this year, our Coalition Government agreed a general response to the European Commission’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) at a meeting of European health ministers in Luxembourg. Unfortunately, because the Conservative Public Health Minister, Anna Soubry, avoided the House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee, Members of Parliament were denied the opportunity to discuss the directive and the ramifications of its proposals are only now beginning to emerge. The Luxembourg meeting agreed, among other things, to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes and increase the size of health warnings on all tobacco products throughout the European Union. If passed by MEPs in September, the Tobacco Products Directive will also prohibit smaller pouches of roll your own tobacco and severely restrict the shape and size of cigarette packets.Whatever one thinks of Europe and its hunger for more and more regulations, this latest assault on the buying and selling of a legal product in Britain is entirely self-inflicted by our own government. Who would have expected a Conservative-led government to take Labour’s public health regulations that restricted the availability or consumption of tobacco and the campaigns that demonised smokers – and seek to make them even more punitive?

140. How the Government could cut spending by over £10 billion without reneging on its policies The...
A big thank you to Andrew Haldenby of Reform, Ruth Porter of the IEA, Chris Nicholson of Centre Forum, Matthew Sinclair of the Taxpayers Alliance and Neil O'Brien of Policy Exchange for participating in our ThinkTankCentral series last week on how George Osborne could cut the growth of public spending further and faster in the budget.I reckon that at a very rough estimate their ideas stacked up to some £50 billion - getting on for a tenth of all public spending. Admittedly, some contributors' ideas overlapped and some calcultated savings differently. As I read and edited them each day, I tended to divide them up in my mind into four categories.

141. Chris Grayling defines the enemy The Tory Diary
In a speech to Policy Exchange later today Chris Grayling, Employment minister, will define the enemies of this Government's mission.(1) The Polly Toynbee Left: "I’m afraid that too many people still just don’t get it. Like the “Polly Toynbee left” who rail with outrage against the idea of a young unemployed person being offered the chance to do a month’s work experience with Airbus, British Telecom, UK Mail or Tesco. Slave Labour they call it. Well that’s just insulting to some great companies who are helping young people get a job, not to mention the young people benefiting from placements by picking up the valuable skills and experience they need to get a leg up into the world of work. They just don’t understand that in today’s world, things don’t come on a plate. That Government can’t just create opportunity for all. That people have to go the extra mile if they want to succeed. Nor do they understand that you have to create wealth, not borrow it."(2) The EU bureaucrats: "Then there are the officials in Brussels who sit in meetings about the need to create employment and talk about more regulation as the solution.

143. Cut spending faster, urges Liam Fox, and make room for economy-boosting tax relief The Tory...
In his most important intervention since resigning as Defence Secretary Liam Fox has issued a coded warning that the Coalition's deficit reduction strategy could be at risk if action is not taken to accelerate economic growth. In an article for tomorrow's Financial Times Dr Fox says the Chancellor has "created enough credibility with international creditors and investors to buy time" but, he continues, "there are questions that must be answered if growth is to accompany deficit reduction". He also appears to express misgivings about the long-term effects of Quantitative Easing. "There are issues of inflation and credit expansion," he writes, "that will need to be addressed in the longer term."He expresses concern at the capacity of UK industry to export to fast-growing emerging markets. Why, he asks, are British exports to Asia growing more slowly than countries in the Eurozone like Greece and Spain when sterling has fallen by 25%?The meat of his article, however, concerns cutting red tape and the pace of spending cuts. On deregulation he recommends more political courage:

144. Labour councillors forced to be union members | Local Government
For most the closed show may have gone but it still applies to Labour councillors and Labour council candidates. The Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles is reviewing the rules on councillors' declarations of interest - at present they only have to declare sponsorship from a trade union. However if they can't find a union, affliated to the Labour Party, to allow them to be a member then they are not eligibile to be a councillor. This is surely a relevant concern that should be declared. Surely acting against his union's policy is something a Labour councillor would wish to avoid?
