417. Texas secession petition reaches 25,000 signatures. Even Obama doesn't warrant this conservative...
If at first you don’t succeed … secede! That seems to be the attitude of the folks in 20 states who have reacted to the re-election of Barack Obama by petitioning for independence from the United States. Anyone over thirteen can sign up on the White House website and it requires only a first name and last initial to do so. The petitioners in Texas have reached the threshold of 25,000 signatures necessary to trigger an official response from the administration. The answer will doubtless be a big fat "no" – and Governor Rick Perry has affirmed that Texas should stay in the Union. But it’s interesting to note just how many in the Lone Star state would rather go it alone than suffer "four more years".The mood on much of the Right is pure Götterdämmerung – as if America had just elected Lenin himself.

A nursing union official who accused Andrew Lansley of lying is being investigated by hospital and union bosses after it was revealed that she runs a private health consultancy in her spare time. In the newspaper report that detailed Ms Pilgrim’s attack on Mr Lansley, she was described as a ‘nurse for 33 years and union representative’.She gave up nursing some time ago and is a full-time union official paid an estimated £40,000 by the hospital.

420. And after we've left the EU | Telegraph Blogs
I think I've decided what to do when I put myself out of a job as an MEP. The next big task, once we're safely out of the EU, will be to repair the Anglosphere: the community of free English-speaking democracies. I have written a piece about it in that superb newspaper The Australian.I've recently visited a number of Anglosphere countries to plug the message: Ireland, the US, Australia, Canada. The past two centuries have been dominated by the English-speaking peoples and, though we've made our share of mistakes, we can also be proud of the way we have spread our values: personal liberty, parliamentary supremacy, the rule of law, free trade, property rights.

421. Greece wants the euro but doesn't want the austerity. How much longer can this go on? –...
Supporters of the euro, in Athens and in Brussels, have been quick to proclaim victory. Greek Euro-enthusiasts congratulated their countrymen on their level-headedness, while EU officials indicated that the country might be rewarded with a slight relaxation of the bailout terms. Yet there is something contrived, rehearsed even, about the triumphalism. The Greek electorate is in denial. It rejects austerity, but insists on keeping the euro. All the main parties duly parroted what voters wanted to hear, making for a fantasy election, a make-believe election, a fingers-in-my-ears-I-can't-hear-you election. The only list which was honest about the necessary cuts – a coalition of three liberal parties – failed to gain a single seat.

422. The coolest (if not the safest) five science demonstrations you can do at home – Telegraph...
When the time comes for me to inflict my genetic material on the world, I want geeky children. Pace Baroness Greenfield, I want them to spend hours every day in front of the computer, so that they can give me a decent game on Mario Kart by the time they're eight. (More seriously, I want them to be computer literate, in this computer-driven world.) And I want them to be excited about how the world works. Yes: I want them to know why science is important, and why it's beautiful. Otherwise they'll end up doing journalism or something, and I shall die of shame.Since we apparently can't trust our schools to do it any more – they'll just print out a copy of next year's exam questions and get the poor brats to memorise them; thanks, EdExcel – we're going to have to do it ourselves. So I asked Twitter for the best demonstrations of science that you could do at home.

423. What does the Queen think about wind farms? – Telegraph Blogs
Many of us have our suspicions, obviously. Some of us think it's exceedingly likely that in her private apartments at Buckingham Palace – and quite possibly in the games room at Balmoral too – she keeps a dart board with pictures of wind farms on it. And that she has vowed never ever ever to give Sir Reginald Sheffield Bt an Order of Merit so long as she lives, on account of how much she despises him for the fat, rent-seeking fortune he is making from the wind turbines on his estates. And that were civil war ever to break out over global warming, she would certainly act as figurehead for the Realist side led by Generals Booker, Monckton and Delingpole rather than the unwashed rabble of shrieking alarmists led by the puritanical General Porritt, the grim Leveller Monbiot and the Ranter Ward.

424. Women are great: they don't need quotas – Telegraph Blogs
I love women. Women are great. I've married one, I've personally bred one and I've got lots who are my friends. And after years of close observation, here's what I've concluded: chicks are definitely the superior species. They're more intuitive, more versatile, more articulate, more competent. Plus, of course, they have breasts.

425. London 2012 Olympics: Seb Coe lays down the law on branding at the Games | Mail Online
Mean-spirited Olympics chiefs have already banned frisbees, flags and oversized hats in a list of oppressive rules to keep ticketholders under control. But now it has emerged sports fans will also be hauled out of official London 2012 venues for daring to wear a Pepsi T-shirt - simply because it is not an accredited sponsor. In the latest example of the increasing dominance of commercial sponsors in international sport, the draconian law was revealed by Olympic supremo Sebastian Coe today as he defended claims of a heavy-handed approach to protecting endorsers' rights.Fizzy-drinks fans, however, can still get past the tightly guarded turnstiles as long as they only wear T-shirts bearing the slogan of bitter rivals Coca-Cola - an 'Official Olympics Partner'.

426. Alex 'Butcher' Salmond has destroyed Scotland – Telegraph Blogs
Today is the Scottish National Party conference in Perth. At some stage, SNP leader Alex Salmond will no doubt be crowing, as he is wont to do, about his success in transforming Scotland into the "Saudi Arabia of renewables". This is inaccurate. What he has actually done is transform Scotland into the Saudi Arabia of tourism, which is to say he has turned a once-beautiful country into a vast, inhospitable desert which no one in their right mind would want to visit.Scotland's landscape was, until recently, one of the great glories of our national heritage. What made it so special was its vastness, its remoteness, its stark, unspoilt magnificence. Though, of course, man has played his part in shaping it – the stone walls and bothies built by crofters, the patchwork colours on the hillside caused by burning sections of heather on the moor in order to provide new shoots for the grouse – but till now his presence has been discreet and has enhanced the country's beauty rather than detracting from it. No more, however. Wind farms have ruined everything.

430. George Osborne and the Budget of meh – Telegraph Blogs
If this is the best Gideon can do it's no wonder the markets have responded with a yawn of supreme indifference. This isn't a Budget for growth. It isn't a Budget for the squeezed middle. It's a Budget of meh.Osborne is not stupid. (At least not totally so). He knows damned well that renewables are a hopeless waste of space and money. He also knows – as the second bit intimates – that Britain's abundant shale gas supplies are by far our best hope for a secure, clean, cheap energy future.Unfortunately, he faces at least two major problems. One of them is the Guardian/green/Lib-Dem/BBC nexus, which is being given carte blanche to continue with its mendacious, junk-science claims that "fracking" and shale gas production represent some kind of major environmental threat

431. The debt crisis spreads to Spain and Italy: will MPs vote to continue Britain's liabilities?...
The Government has responded to Mark Reckless’s anti-bailout motion with a wrecking amendment. Where his motion “requires” the government to halt the bailouts, theirs “urges”. The Whips’ motion also deletes the reference to the illegality of the bailouts – an illegality which no one in Europe seriously challenges.

432. Jimmy Carr's credibility is toast – Telegraph Blogs
I can think of at least two differences between me and the brilliantly funny, heroically near-the-knuckle comedian and satirist Jimmy Carr. One is that I don't earn in excess of £3.3 million a year. And the other is that in the unlikely event that I ever did and were – very sensibly - to channel it through an elaborate Jersey tax avoidance scheme, I could do so without the slightest stain on my conscience or my credibility. Why? Because, as I make perfectly clear in every article I ever write on the subject, I believe that tax is legalised theft and that earners have a sacred duty to stop as much money as they (legally) can getting into the filthy hands of Big Government, because…
