369. Paxo gets a stuffing - Telegraph Blogs
So how exactly would the BBC cover Peter Lilley's devastating critique of the Stern Review? This week we had our answer on Newsnight: by trying to bury it beneath a piece of reportage so shrill and tendentious it might have come straight off a Greenpeace press release…. (H/T Bishop Hill)As indeed it pretty much did. The report concerned a Cambridge professor named Peter Wadhams who would like us to believe that he has found devastating new evidence that the arctic is melting faster than ever before. And guess who's providing the mother ship for his adventures?Greenpeace, that's who!Now can you imagine the fuss if a polar research team was sent to the arctic on a ship paid for by Koch Industries. Or Exxon. Or even Biteback, evil, mainly right-wing publisher of James Delingpole's Watermelons. The greenies would have a fit wouldn't they? There'd be a whole wailing wall's worth of lamentation from Monbiot, and Leo Hickman, and Damian Carrington and all the usual suspects. Any scientific research that emerged therefrom would be declared wholly invalid because of its outrageously biased source. So why don't similar rules apply to Greenpeace, a hard-left, virulently anti-capitalist organisation

370. Hollywood fracks up – Telegraph Blogs
Matt Damon's new film Promised Land sounds really promising. It's about a cynical young man sent by a large wind farm company to a lovely village in rural Pennsylvania to seduce the locals with tales of the massive sums of money they'll make if they sign a deal to have huge wind turbines built on their farmland.Dollar signs flash in the greedy hicks' eyes. This wind farm scam is crazy: no way would they have made that much money in their entire lives from just farming. Every one rushes to Damon: "Where do I sign?"But Damon has begun falling in love with a local farm girl who tells him the truth about wind farms: that they're ugly, that they kill birds and bats, that they ravage the countryside, blight views, divide communities and make people sick with their Low Frequency Noise. So instead of bribing locals to have these bat-chomping bird-slicing eco-crucifixes erected in their village, Damon leads the fight back. NO MORE WIND FARMS!f only. But the sad truth is that this lame-assed, eco-propaganda movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the genuine threat of wind farms but with the almost wholly imaginary one of fracking. Fracking has been a godsend to the US economy, blessing it with clean, cheap, abundant energy which has enriched those states lucky enough to have big shale gas reserves, created jobs and increased America's energy security by reducing its reliance on imported gas from unstable countries. What's not to like about shale gas?Well indeed. And this is proving something of a problem for America's showbiz bleeding hearts.

372. Children just aren't going to know what sun is – Telegraph Blogs
There's a great piece by David Rose in the Mail On Sunday nicely summing up what a lot of us here knew already: that the thing we really need to fear right now is not global warming but global cooling. And that, on current evidence, it's global cooling we're going to get.The supposed ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming is facing an inconvenient challenge after the release of new temperature data showing the planet has not warmed for the past 15 years. The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.Rose's piece comes hot on the heels of an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal signed by 16 distinguished scientists (proper ones: not "climate" "scientists") noting the continuing absence of ManBearPig:

373. Boris Johnson speech's extraordinary attack on the 'quitters, the splitters, the kippers' |...
The London Mayor addresses a rally of Conservative activists tonight, before his official speech to the conference faithful in Birmingham tomorrow.Mr Johnson vowed to take on the 'quitters, the splitters, the kippers' who are trying to undermine the Tory party. And he mocked defectors with an extraordinary sex joke. He told delighted Tory activists:'The EU commission wants to ban vacuum cleaners on the grounds that they are too powerful.‘If you do not handle your vacuum cleaner correctly, you may end up inhaling the hamster – the budgerigar through the bars of the cage.‘And I have read that there are some people – probably the type who are thinking of defecting to UKIP – who present themselves at A&E with barely credible injuries sustained through vacuum cleaner abuse.’The outspoken remark is likely to infuriate UKIP supporters, and will draw comparisons to when defence minister Anna Soubry said of Mr Farage: 'I always think he looks like somebody has put their finger up his bottom and he really rather likes it.'

379. How should Conservatives deal with UKIP?
Members of the new ConservativeHome Jury offer their thoughts. These thoughts were first submitted a week ago and appeared in the ConservativeHome Party Conference newspaper. ANGIE BRAY MP: We need a robust response on prisoner votes and, more topically, the rights of trade unions as they persuade the European Court of Human Rights to re-examine issues like rights to secondary picketing. We need action, not just words, on repatriating a swathe of regulatory powers.LOUISE MENSCH: Not an in-out referendum - the Europhile's dream. Proposed by ex Euro MEP, this question almost demands a 'Yes' vote. We should have a referendum on new terms of membership - a semi-detached relationship. Cameron and Osborne should define the terms. Then the referendum should offer three choices. (Can you see UKIP's fox cowering in the corner? We're about to shoot it.) 1. Leave the EU altogether. 2. Demand new membership terms (as listed) and leave if we don't get them. 3. Remain as we are. Can anybody doubt a massive victory for point two?

380. Red Pill, Blue Pill | Telegraph Blogs
The other day m'learned colleague Ambrose Evans Pritchard wrote a piece in praise of money-printing. What the world needs is more Quantitative Easing, he argued, though this time deployed in "nuclear force."I have no doubt that this would bring about a full recovery very fast if conducted with enough panache, but is it possible to marshal political consent for such revolutionary action? The Tea Party Congress, like Europe's bourgeousie, would rather wallow in liquidation, Puritan cleansing, and mass default than tolerate the possibility of a solution.I couldn't disagree more violently with this analysis.

382. God, I'm brilliant! – Telegraph Blogs
Like my esteemed colleague Dan Hannan, I have a pathological aversion to posting up videos of myself on my blogs. In this case, however, I feel I must make an exception. It's not often you get to appear on Uncommon Knowledge being interviewed by the mighty Peter Robinson. (Our subjects: Climategate; Watermelons; the imminent collapse of Europe)Peter Robinson is the uber-poised, uber-intelligent, uber-civilised (well he did go to Ch Ch) commentator, broadcaster and former Reagan aide who as a young man scripted the "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Brandenburg Gate speech in Berlin in 1987. He's the co-founder of the US conservative website Ricochet which contains some of the most brilliant writing in the entire blogosphere and fabbo podcasts too including one mysteriously called Radio Free Delingpole

384. The strange death of BNP England | Telegraph Blogs
The BNP looks like it is coming to the end of its existence, the political party’s decline and fall having a suitable touch of comedy. Having collapsed in the polls since their 2009 heyday, party leader Nick Griffin is now displaying the most obvious symptom of a movement in disarray – turning his energy on rivals. As Matthew Goodwin of Nottingham University explains, Griffin has produced a report on the English Defence League, "claiming that behind the EDL lie a number of shadowy neoconservatives and 'Zionist terrorists' who are seeking to manipulate public concern over Islam to launch new wars and split the far right nationalist scene".
