321. Tories plotting to form a coalition with Northern Ireland MPs to avoid sharing power again with Clegg
Senior Tories are secretly preparing the ground for a potential power-sharing deal with unionist MPs from Northern Ireland in the event of another hung parliament after next year’s general election.David Cameron and George Osborne have ordered ministers to say nothing in public to indicate they believe their party is contemplating anything other than outright victory. But privately, many fear the Conservatives are likely to struggle to assemble a majority, though they are increasingly confident that they can remain the largest party. If they again fall short of the 326 MPs needed for an outright win, senior Tories suggest the Democratic Unionist MPs from Northern Ireland could hold the balance of power.

322. Ed Balls treats the TUC like simpletons – Telegraph Blogs
Ed Balls has never been a reticent fellow but even by his standards of bare-faced cheek his speech to the TUC this morning will take some beating. Here’s the man who helped master-mind Gordon Brown’s transformation of a thriving economy – courtesy of Ken Clarke – into a debt-ridden basket case in a...

324. In defence of capitalism, the most virtuous economic system yet devised – Telegraph Blogs
There’s nothing selfish about capitalism. Like every economic model, it is a matrix within which individual actors can behave morally or immorally. But here’s the thing: no one has yet come up with a system that rewards decent behaviour to the same extent. In an open market based on property rights and free contract, you become wealthy by offering an honest service to others. I am typing these words on a machine developed by the late Steve Jobs. He gained from the exchange (adding fractionally to his net wealth) and so did I (adding to my convenience).Under the various forms of corporatism tried by fascist and socialist regimes, by contrast, someone else – generally a state official – gets to allocate the goodies, guaranteeing favouritism and corruption.

326. Chris Bryant's immigration speech isn't just a car crash, it's a full on, bollard-smashing...
During the 2010 General Election campaign, a Labour photo opp with Gordon Brown was interrupted by a car colliding with a bus stop. At that point, I thought it was as bad as things could get - how could any metaphorical car crash by a politician possibly outdo the real thing?Chris Bryant is evidently more imaginative, and has today embarked on a one man mission to prove me wrong. Belted into the driver's seat of a rhetorical red mini metro, he careered through the political media, ploughing into bollards, oncoming traffic, tourists and both mounted cavalrymen outside Horseguards.Just to ensure the job was done properly, he brought his political road-trip to a halt by effecting a head-on collision with an Alan Partridge-style joke about how easy it is to mistakenly think obese women are pregnant. The metaphorical car is definitely a write-off.

327. Why I'm rooting for Barack Obama – Telegraph Blogs
Let's get one thing clear: Obama unquestionably ranks among the bottom five presidents in US history. In terms of sublime awfulness he's right up there with our late and extremely unlamented ex-PM Gordon Brown – which is quite some doing, given that Brown singlehandedly wrought more destruction on his country than the Luftwaffe, Dutch Elm Disease, the South Sea Bubble, the Fire of London and the Black Death combined.

328. Obama's literary agent says he was 'born in Kenya'. How did the mainstream media miss this?...
Whatever you think of Breitbart.com’s punishing vetting process, it has exposed just how little work the mainstream media did in investigating candidate Obama back in 2008. Not all of Team Breitbart’s revelations have been election-deciders, but they have often been stuff that a simple Google would have uncovered. If they revealed tomorrow that he’d had his own cross-dressing-themed sitcom on primetime TV in the 1980s, I wouldn’t be surprised. The latest find is a fascinating inversion of the birther conspiracy. Breitbart.com has discovered that in 1991 Barack Obama’s literary agent (who also represented New Kids on the Block) published a booklet that included a biography of the future President. The audience was “business colleagues” in the publishing industry and it was designed to promote Obama’s anticipated first book (later abandoned) called Journeys in Black and White. Here’s how it describes the author’s origins.

329. A return to capital punishment? It is time we thought once more about the deterrent effect...
The murder of two unarmed women police officers is bound to re-ignite the debate over whether our police officers should be armed as a matter of routine and whether there should be a return to capital punishment for limited categories of murder, such as that of a police officer, or more generally. The first option of arming police officers would be allowed by our masters in Brussels and Strasbourg even though it might lead to cases of summary execution of the innocent; the second would not.For my part, I would be reluctant to see the routine arming of the police. Effective policing demands that the relationship between the police officer and the public should be a comfortable one, reflecting that the constable is a member of the public and historically had few powers which were not also possessed by any other citizen. The carrying of guns would widen the gap which has grown between the police and the public in recent years. That does not mean that the whole question of the deterrent effect of capital punishment should not be re-examined.

330. Free Schools: the stake in the heart of the Progressive vampire – Telegraph Blogs
Last night I saw the future of education in Britain – and it worked. The occasion was the launch of Katharine Birbalsingh’s free school in Lambeth, South London. As a local parent I was naturally very interested in this because at the moment round these parts you have two options when your kids turn 11: either you consign them to the dustbin of whichever failing state school you’re unlucky enough to get them into. Or you consign yourself to an old age of misery and penury by forking out for one of the many excellent local private schools.

331. David Cameron's greatest crime – Telegraph Blogs
Apparently David Cameron is sometimes wont to ask: "Why does James Delingpole hate me so much?"It's a fair question: we used to be friends after all. And if I'm honest I wish we still were. Life would be so much easier and more fun if I were part of the Prime Minister's inner circle: all those weekends at Chequers; all the hanging out with Jeremy Clarkson and the other groovesters of the Chipping Norton 'n' Witney set; all that material I'd be given for the eventual Authorised Biography.Problem is, if there's one thing I value even more than the friendships I made at Oxford it's the British countryside.

332. Sorry: but what exactly is wrong with UKIP wanting to put country before party? –...
"When you were the Yorkshire Ripper's assistant how many of his victims did you personally kill and dismember?" Though this wasn't one of the questions John Humphrys actually put to Nigel Farage on the Today programme this morning, you could tell from his tone it was the sort of thing he'd much rather be asking than all that tame stuff about whether a Tory/UKIP alliance might ever be on the cards. The fact is that Humphrys/the Today programme/the BBC generally all loathe Farage and UKIP probably even more than they detest the BNP or even Israel or the Tea Party.

333. EU regulation is making the next crash inevitable – Telegraph Blogs
The European Parliament is back in full session, carrying on as if nothing untoward were taking place beyond its walls. José Manuel Durão Barroso is calling for federalism and a new world order. MEPs are regulating private industries whose workings they barely understand.Their chief target in this session is the financial services sector, which they find at once baffling and frightening. You won’t be surprised to learn that their proposals will drive business out of the EU as a whole, and London in particular. What might surprise you is that, at the same time, they make another banking collapse far more likely.Bank failures are not a sign that capitalism has broken down. On the contrary, they are a sign that capitalism is working. A market depend…

334. Something odd is happening to Britain's once superb Civil Service – Telegraph Blogs
Some very odd things are going on in the Civil Service. Until very recently it has been a model of integrity and (despite all the jokes), in its upper reaches in particular, more competent than almost any other. It owed its quality to the great 19th-century reforms which ended the practices of buying commissions in the Armed Services and promotion that depended on who you knew, or who your father was, in the civil service.

336. John Bercow: A public rollicking for 'scurvy' Speaker | Mail Online
There was a screamingly awkward scene at a smart dinner this week when, in front of more than 100 VIPs, a veteran Labour peer tore into Speaker John Bercow and his ‘scurvy’ lack of manners.Monday’s event, held at Speaker’s House, honoured the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, which embeds MPs with the military to give them a taste of life in uniform.
