81. Labour's election strategy in tatters: 'Cost of living' fears groundless as wages rise | Mail...
Ed Miliband faces a fresh crisis as his ‘cost of living card’ evaporates ahead of the election.Figures out later this week are expected to show that pay rises are now outstripping inflation for the first time in six years. This means Labour’s entire election strategy – to blame the Coalition for presiding over a ‘cost of living crisis’ – will effectively become redundant. At the weekend Chancellor George Osborne used a speech in the US to crow that Labour were ‘wrong about the past and they are wrong about the future’.And Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg used his monthly Press conference to lambast Labour for having created the squeeze on living standards in the first place by ‘crashing’ the economy.

82. Nick Clegg amuses his little cult by sneering at the 1950s. Are families really happier now?...
Whilst I would not want The Daily Telegraph and these blogs to become a festival site of back-scratching, I have to commend both Cristina Odone's column of today on Mr Clegg’s diatribe against marriage and the society of the 1950s and Charles Moore's Saturday article on Mr Cameron's attempt to “meddle with the Monarchy”. Not only are they each persuasive insights into their separate subjects but they both say a great deal about the Prime Minister, his deputy and the Government.

83. Matthew Hancock MP: Why Labour has zero credibility on living standards. And what Conservatives...
So, the economy is growing. Recent surveys of activity are solid. Confidence is rising. Our crucial task is to make sure everyone who wants to work hard – in all parts of the country, in all sectors of our economy, have the chance to be part of the recovery. We hear too that Labour, having lost the argument on deficit reduction, have a newfound interest in living standards. It’s a vital subject. So let’s look at the debate on living standards, past present and future.

85. Christopher Snowdon: Plain packaging proposals for cigarettes may actually harm the public...
The coalition of state-funded anti-smoking groups have started revving up their trusty public relations machine for yet another legislative campaign. While their temperance counterparts concentrate on minimum pricing, the anti-tobacco lobby has its heart set on ‘plain packaging’. The packaging will, in truth, be anything but plain. If we are to follow Australia’s example—where a plain packaging law has been passed, but not yet introduced—cigarette packs will show a very large photo of a tumour or corpse against a green-brown background. The White Album, this is not.

86. Lord Ashcroft writes an open letter to Justine Greening: Overseas aid doesn't work and we can't afford it | ConservativeHome
By Lord Ashcroft, KCMG PC.Dear Justine,Congratulations on your new job. You will, without doubt, find the Department for International Development “Dfid” far more pleasant than your previous post in the Department of Transport. Yes, you will spend a lot of time in the air, giving you perhaps a fresh perspective on Britain’s aviation needs. But you get to travel the world like a medieval potentate, with politicians in the developing world keen to tap into your generosity. You will visit some of the world’s most wonderful nations and see some of the globe’s most stunning scenary. And you can spray around taxpayers’ money just like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown did in the days before the banking crisis. The downside is you may not be very popular when you are in Britain. At a time when libraries are being closed and people with disabilities face benefit cuts, there is growing fury over giving away ever-increasing sums to foreigners. Despite the downturn, your department’s budget is the only one still soaring, set to grow 50% during the term of the Coalition from £7.8bn in 2010 to £11.5bn by 2015.Many Conservatives are horrified by this. They think it morally wrong to carry on giving away such vast sums abroad - more than £300 per household - at a time of domestic spending cuts. Others argue it is politically insane to modernise by currying favour with Guardian type readers that looks out of touch in current circumstances.

87. Chris Huhne: Ringleaders exit allows Tories to move in for kill - Telegraph
Throughout Westminster there was initially unrestrained glee in many high offices of state at the news that Chris Huhne was being charged and, therefore, his career was in tatters. In recent weeks, David Cameron had taken to sighing when the latest accusations of the Energy Secretary being “on political manoeuvres” had been brought to his attention.Mr Huhne had been caught repeatedly “smearing” and briefing against Conservative ministers, including Theresa May and Philip Hammond. He regularly arrived in Cabinet to deliver “rebukes” on government policy which were reported accurately within minutes. His relationship with his senior Liberal Democrat colleagues was also far from straightforward. The leadership campaign he waged against Nick Clegg was one of the dirtiest in the party’s history.

88. The Today programme forgets to ask Nick Clegg about the euro. How odd… – Telegraph...
As Holmes told Watson long ago, it is often the fact that the dog did not bark which tells us something important. So it was with the Nick Clegg interview on the Today programme on Thursday. Naturally enough, the interviewer spent more time on what, when and who the Prime Minister told his deputy about the famous "veto" at the December meeting of the EU Council than anything else. That gave Mr Clegg plenty of time to drag out the familiar old chestnut about the three million British jobs put at risk should the United Kingdom become once again a self-governing nation. This time, however, Mr Clegg went further – asserting, without contradiction or question, that those jobs would be "at risk" unless Mr Cameron got back to the "top table". Mere membership of the EU, it seems, is no longer enough to ensure access to its markets. That, however, was not the most remarkable feature of the interview. That was the unspoken agreement between Mr Clegg and the Today interviewer that neither of them would utter the word "euro".Odd, wasn't it? That Council meeting was all about the euro. The biggest threat to the jobs of British workers is the economic shambles in our markets caused by the euro.

89. Steve Barclay MP: Conservative Voice is for everyone on the centre right who wants to reach out...
Yesterday morning I was delighted to join the launch of Conservative Voice, a new group founded by Don Porter, alongside fellow MPs Liam Fox, David Davis, Dom Raab and Robert Halfon.Political party membership is falling across the board and progressively ageing. A key challenge is therefore how we engage and enthuse those who hold right of centre views but who do not currently identify with the Conservative Party. In doing this, the focus of Conservative Voice is unashamedly to secure more elected Tory representatives across all levels of local and national government and - above all - to defeat Labour at the next election.

90. Sarkozy out on a limb as Germans side with Cameron after devastating triple whammy for French PM...
A week ago it was Britain that looked isolated from Europe following David Cameron’s veto of a eurozone treaty. But yesterday it was France and its president Nicolas Sarkozy who seemed to have no friends left after a devastating triple whammy.First, French prime minister Francois Fillon was rebuked by Nick Clegg, who said a series of provocative comments about the British were ‘simply unacceptable’.Secondly, amid fears that the floundering French economy is heading for the rocks, a report revealed that nervous British banks pulled almost £20billion out of the country between July and September.Thirdly, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told David Cameron she wants to resist Mr Sarkozy’s grandiose plans to redraw EU rules and undermine Britain’s interests in the EU single market.Mr Cameron’s relationship with Mr Sarkozy – forged during the war in Libya – appears to have broken down, with Downing Street announcing that he has ‘no plans’ to talk to the president.

91. Nick Clegg needs cutting down to size. If only the Prime Minister was brave enough to do the job...
It is good news that the Prime Minister is now beginning to understand that the judicial adventurists and imperialists of the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights are interfering in matters which should be the concern of the British people and no one else. It is, however, no use going cap in hand hoping that in three or four years the Council of Europe might graciously agree to some limitation of its power to interfere in such matters as our immigration policy. The right way to deal with this problem is to begin the procedures to denounce the Convention and to inform the Council that we will leave within twelve months unless the changes we require are agreed by then.Of course, there would be squawks of horror from the Labour Party, its allies in the Lib Dems and that absurd organisation called Liberty. They will claim that since the Convention was supported by Winston Churchill, largely designed by Maxwell Fyffe and negotiated by Attlee and Bevin it would be an impious act to touch, or even criticise, the outrageous findings of the Court.

92. Robert Halfon MP: Yes, Labour messed up migration. But there's nothing unConservative in critising TESCO
So much for Labour and the recasting of immigration policy. Chris Bryant’s interview on Radio 4 Today was a car-crash, not just because mistakes were made in the pre-release (Kent instead described as the place where Tesco closed a Distribution Centre, rather than Harlow, Essex, being a prime example), but because most fair-minded people know why we are in this mess in the first place. The last Labour Government allowed de facto uncontrolled immigration, and grossly underestimated the amount of migrants who would come here - especially those from Eastern Europe. They also signed all the EU Directives that allowed big companies to hire agency workers on the cheap - in technical parlance, known as ‘The Swedish Derogation’.But behind the political posturing, there is a more serious point: the problem of big corporate juggernauts, and the way they treat their workers.

95. Sketch: the day the Energy Secretary lost power - Telegraph
Yesterday morning, Nick Clegg left a Lib Dem do in Eastbourne so he could return to London and talk about Chris Huhne. Every so often, the BBC News channel would repeat a clip of the Deputy Prime Minister getting into his car. The back, obviously, not the driving seat – he had a chauffeur. Again and again I watched the car drive off slowly.Oh, Mr Clegg. Talk about rubbing salt into the wound. All morning, Westminster fizzed. At 10am, hacks gawped at the TV, awaiting the statement from the Crown Prosecution Service. It was like the way normal human beings watch the Sunday night editions of The X Factor. Our glamorous host, CPS head Keir Starmer, presented the live result. The votes had been counted and verified, and the act leaving the Cabinet would be… Chris Huhne!

96. Douglas Carswell MP: 'Small-state Conservatism' is more popular than 'wind turbine Conservatism'...
It’s not all doom and gloom. Here in my part of Essex, our brand of Conservatism actually seems to be doing rather well.“Wind turbine Toryism” might be struggling a little elsewhere. But in my experience the appetite for small-state, direct democracy Conservatism has never been stronger.Take our local Association membership, for example. Nationally, fewer folk each year seem to join political parties. Not here. Over the past year alone, over a hundred new members have joined, including young people and families.Far from struggling to find local candidates to field in local council elections, as was once the case, our local Association has been inundated with applications from local residents wanting to serve their community – even in seats we’ve not held for decades.
