LORD Tebbit blasted calls for a "mansion tax" yesterday — saying he would be clobbered because his wife was paralysed by the IRA's Brighton bomb.People in homes worth more than £2million would be hit by any new charges.Former Tory chairman Lord Tebbit — whose wife Margaret was among victims of the Provo attack during the 1984 party conference — said: "I've got a bigger house than most people. That's partly because I need it to house two carers to look after my wife."Should I be taxed then on the basis that I live in a mansion? I wouldn't need such a big house if my wife wasn't nearly murdered."

359. The reason we can now debate immigration is that racism is in decline – Telegraph Blogs
“Racist! Racist!” chorused the trainee barristers. And they meant it. It was the early 1990s, and I was debating the Maastricht Treaty before an audience of young lawyers at one of the Inns of Court. My debating partner had listed a series of policies that were being partially transferred to Brussels: policing, diplomacy, environmental regulation and so on. When he added immigration to the list, the gowns before us began to shake angrily. It takes a real effort to remember the way immigration used to be discussed. Or, rather, not discussed. As my debating partner found, to raise the subject at all was to invite accusations of bigotry. Never mind that he hadn’t said whether the EU would increase or decrease migratory flows. Never mind that the beneficiaries of EU free movement would be overwhelmingly white. You couldn’t even use the word “immigration”.

363. Now for a referendum, say sceptics: It's time to redraw the rules on Europe, say Redwood and Co...
Eurosceptics are vowing to step up pressure for a referendum in the wake of David Cameron’s historic decision to veto a new EU treaty. The Prime Minister can expect a hero’s welcome from his party today when he makes a Commons statement on last week’s landmark summit in Brussels. But Tory MPs – emboldened by the decision – have made it clear they will pile pressure on Mr Cameron to go further and take the ‘inevitable’ next step towards renegotiating Britain’s future relationship with Brussels. In a sign of the growing influence wielded by the Eurosceptics, it also emerged that Foreign Office Officials are to hold talks with them tomorrow to discuss which powers might be clawed back from Brussels.Former Tory Cabinet Minister John Redwood yesterday described Mr Cameron’s use of the veto – which has infuriated other EU leaders and the Liberal Democrats – as ‘necessary ground clearing’.

365. Ian Blair's attack on police reform is misguided | Local Government
Peter Walker, a former Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire, on the flawed claims from Lord Blair that police independence is under threatI have liked and respected Lord Ian Blair since I shared a classroom with him on the Police Senior Command Course almost twenty years ago. It was clear even then that he was destined for the very top of the service. However, I simply do not agree with his views on the Police Reform Programme.Writing in the New Statesman recently, Lord Blair declared "Police independence is under threat" and gave four reasons for his views. I truly believe each to be wrong.Firstly, he says that "a series of connected decisions" reinforce the view "the main job of the Police is to catch criminals", which he goes on to criticise.

366. Is there a solution to the Coalition's NHS problem? The Tory Diary
Up until the last election I had my doubts about the implications for other Whitehall budgets of the NHS spending pledge but I understood the politics. Cameron wanted to neutralise the NHS as an issue by spending more on it than could probably be afforded... but in doing so he could concentrate on other difficult areas of reform. That strategy was then thrown out of the window when Andrew Lansley introduced his reforms during the Coalition's breakneck phase. After spending long years in opposition cuddling up to the professions and saying there'd be no reorganisation (although Lansley claims he was transparent) we were suddenly embarking on a very big reorganisation. The professions are now at war with Mr Lansley and he's fighting back - accusing them of obsessing about their pay and perks.Nonetheless some Tories saw significant merit in the initial reform blueprint - notably Nick de Bois MP - but Lib Dem rebels led by Baroness Shirley Williams then got to work and diluted the reforms until the point they have become blunted and bureaucratic.

In Argentina however, violence broke out.Quebracho, a hardline left-wing group behind the HSBC protest, today vowed to repeat its actions.Quebracho leader Fernando Esteche, who was jailed on charges stemming from political violence during a march four years ago, pledged to target a British-owned business in Argentina every week.Fellow militant Federico Lopardo predicted the next protest could attract as many as 500 supporters.
