- 33. Robert Halfon MP: Conservatives should believe in good business, not big business - as the oil market shows
Today in Parliament, I will lead a debate in Parliament, urging the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority to investigate the oil market. This is for three reasons:Petrol and diesel have never been more expensive, despite a two-year freeze in fuel duty.Oil companies - we have proof - are stopping cheaper oil prices from getting to market. This hurts people on low incomes, who are filling up the family car.A professional oil trader has now given an explosive statement to my PetrolPromise.com website, explaining in detail how the oil-price is being rigged by speculators and banks........Now I want to see lower fuel taxes, too. I have always campaigned in Parliament - with the Sun, Times, Mail, Express, Telegraph, FairFuelUK, and others - for a cut in fuel duty. In the future, I will always urge the Government to reduce fuel duty if they can.But as Conservatives, we should believe in good business, not big business. If cartels and crony corporates are pushing up the cost of living, we should oppose them just as strongly as we oppose Labour’s vision of a centralised “Big State”.

- 34. Tories plotting to form a coalition with Northern Ireland MPs to avoid sharing power again with Clegg
Senior Tories are secretly preparing the ground for a potential power-sharing deal with unionist MPs from Northern Ireland in the event of another hung parliament after next year’s general election.David Cameron and George Osborne have ordered ministers to say nothing in public to indicate they believe their party is contemplating anything other than outright victory. But privately, many fear the Conservatives are likely to struggle to assemble a majority, though they are increasingly confident that they can remain the largest party. If they again fall short of the 326 MPs needed for an outright win, senior Tories suggest the Democratic Unionist MPs from Northern Ireland could hold the balance of power.

- 38. Robert Halfon MP: Ed Miliband isn't talking about Disraeli's One Nation, and this presents Tories with a wonderful opportunity | ConservativeHome
I am one of those who believe that pessimism is a luxury that no Tory can allow himself. So, whilst we can watch Mr Miliband's speech and congratulate him for some political ingenuity — regarding his 'One Nation' clarion call — in practice this gives Conservatives a tremendous opportunity: a chance to reinvigorate the Big Society. For Labour, 'One Nation' still remains another way of saying “the State”. Looking at his speech closely, Mr Miliband argues for “collective action” through the mechanisms of the State. This has been the Socialist cry through the ages; alleviate poverty through redistribution using the levers of Government. He still is arguing for a social-democratic state that robs from the rich in order to give to the poor.Another thought: “One Nation” as expounded by Disraeli was intrinsically “Tory” — it spoke for tradition, not for its own sake, but because it provided an anchor of stability between the generations. For Labour, the '500 year old Oak Tree' is anathema because their view of “One Nation” means Year Zero.Instead of uniting, Mr Miliband's Year Zero seeks to divide. If you have inherited wealth (except, of course, if you come from Hampstead Liberal stock), if you went to a posh school, then automatically you are placed in the category of “undesirable”. An opening for class war — and an opening, too, to create an “internal enemy” — the actions of demagogues throughout the ages, and hardly the stuff of 'One Nation'.

- 43. Top firms 'must file a greenhouse audit': Latest plan by zealot Clegg for more red tape | Daily Mail
A thousand of Britain’s biggest firms will be forced to report all their greenhouse gas emissions under a scheme to ‘benefit the planet’ announced by Nick Clegg yesterday. All FTSE-listed companies such as BP, Aviva and Tesco will have to comply with the regulations, which will cover their entire UK operations from next April. It could be extended to all large businesses in Britain within four years as a way to calculate green taxes already imposed on firms.Mr Clegg said that emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane are leading to dangerous global warming, sea level rises, droughts and floods and said the regulations would help businesses save money on energy bills. He added: ‘Counting your business costs while hiding your greenhouse gas emissions is a false economy.‘British companies need to reduce their harmful emissions for the benefit of the planet, but many back our plans because being energy efficient makes good business sense too. Climate change is one of the gravest threats we face. The UK is leading the urgent action needed at home and abroad.’But the CBI called for other green regulations under the Carbon Reduction Commitment to be scrapped as they do little to improve efficiency and damage business competitiveness. Alan McGill, an independent analyst with PwC, said: ‘As a company, measuring carbon means setting targets, reducing cost, increasing margins. For large companies this won’t be seen as a huge burden.

- 47. Michael Gove's O-level plan: Labour and unions throw up their hands in horror | Mail Online
Plans to end years of dumbing down in schools by replacing GCSEs with rigorous new O-levels rocked the Coalition yesterday.Nick Clegg erupted with fury and vowed to block Michael Gove’s proposals – revealed exclusively in yesterday’s Daily Mail – to toughen up exams taken at 16, saying they would ‘turn back the clock’ and should not be allowed to ‘cater to the few at the top’.The Deputy Prime Minister accused the Education Secretary of seeking to send schools back to the 1950s and throw children on ‘the scrap heap’ by proposing a new simple CSE exam for less able pupils alongside the tough new O-levels.

We don’t need any new 'garden’ cities. London’s brownfield sites can solve the housing crisis.Oi! Clegg! No! Congratulations to this paper for exposing the appalling plans of the Deputy Prime Minister. He wants new cities in the Home Counties, he says – and he is going to fight until he gets his way.
