- 305. Local elections 2012: By linking UKIP to the BNP, Baroness Warsi is insulting voters she should...
As I settled down to watch the BBC coverage of the election results, I groaned when I saw that Baroness Warsi had been deployed to put a gloss on the good kicking the voters had given the Tories.But, however low my expectations, nothing prepared me for the quite disgraceful, cynical and plain stupid attempt she made to try to link the UK Independence Party with the BNP.it's bad enough that the Chairman of the Conservative Party doesn't know the difference between 'less' and 'fewer', but her ignorance of basic grammar - unsurprising in the representative of a party opposed to grammar schools - is trifling compared to the sheer wrongheadedness of her attempt to smear the disillusioned natural conservative supporters who had deserted her party to put their cross by UKIP candidates.

- 306. Failed, failed, failed: Blair said his priorities were education, education, education. But Labour's billions did nothing to raise standards, says report | Daily Mail
Billions of pounds poured into education under Labour resulted in ‘no improvements’ in standards, a major report revealed yesterday.Despite Tony Blair declaring his priorities as ‘education, education, education’ when he swept to power in 1997, a huge increase in spending on schools led to ‘no improvement in student learning outcomes’, the report found.In fact, the UK’s teenagers have slipped down world league tables in crucial subjects while the country’s schools have become among the most socially segregated across the world.

The end-December survey of ConHome members found a big jump in support for the Northern Ireland Secretary, Owen Paterson. - 310. Coalition lacks vision, says Vince Cable - Telegraph
Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, has admitted in a leaked letter that the Government lacks “a compelling vision of where the country is heading” after the financial crisis.The Liberal Democrat minister described elements of the Government’s economic policy as “frankly, rather piecemeal” and said it was not clear how Britons would “earn our living in the future”.The leaked letter, sent by Mr Cable to David Cameron and Nick Clegg last month, is evidence of a growing rift between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats over economic policy in the run-up to the Budget. Senior Liberal Democrats have broken with recent convention by being increasingly vocal in their demands for new taxes on expensive properties to fund greater tax breaks for low-paid workers.

- 313. Sir Antony Jay: slash the BBC by two thirds! – Telegraph Blogs
The BBC's reporting of David Cameron's recent adventures in Europe has been a disgrace. Last night – following the example set by that very exemplar of quisling Europhile values the Today programme – the BBC's Ten O'Clock News managed to reiterate about half a dozen times its view that Britain had been left more "isolated" than ever by Cameron's eminently sensible decision not to sell his country's interests for a mess of pottage. To listen to Nick Robinson and co, you might actually have imagined that it was somehow a bad thing for Britain not to wish to shackle itself to the rotting corpse of the EU;

- 314. Autumn Statement: George Osborne dares Labour to oppose his 1% a year cap | Mail Online
Benefits will be squeezed for three years as George Osborne tries to lay down dividing lines with Labour before the next election.The Chancellor vowed to return ‘fairness’ to the benefits system by capping rises in working age benefits at 1 per cent from April 2013, half the rate of inflation.And he said the Government would introduce a Bill to enshrine the cap in law – forcing the Opposition into a corner over whether to oppose limits in welfare which polls show are popular with the public.

- 315. Spare us the fibs about the EU and the Euro
The “debate” about the EU and Euro remains higgled by misunderstandings that serious people peddle out. Let’s just deal with a few of them.1. If the UK makes a stand or declines to support the Merkel plan, we could lose the 10% of our National Income based on exports to the EU.Response: Whatever happens at summits, Germany will still want to sell us cars and France will still want to sell us wine. The UK will still be selling products and services in the EU, under existing EU rules and WTO controls. That does not change, whatever we do or say on the architecture of the EU and Euro.2. The Merkel plan for greater fiscal controls will save the Euro.Response:The Merkel scheme does not suddenly shrink the Greek deficit, or miraculously refinance the large Italian debt. Printing money could buy them a bit of time, but is not conditional on changes to rules and Treaties. Nothing in the Merkel plan solves the twin probems of too much debt and too little competitiveness in the problem countries.

- 316. Miliband Poster Girl's Union Link Dishonesty - Guy Fawkes' blog
Who would be the perfect person to introduce Ed before he delivered his big speech on trade unions this week? Why, a Labour candidate with no trade union links, of course. Miliband’s team had Birmingham Yardley candidate Jess Phillips warm up for the Labour leader, making sure she emphasised her credentials as a poster girl for Labour’s independence from the unions....Just the one problem: Jess’ claim that she was selected “Not because of my links with any union, company or political pressure group. In fact for the exact opposite reason, because I was none of these things” is a bit of a whopper.

- 317. 'I look like Wallace, not a PM in waiting': Ed admits resemblance to animated character but...
Ed Miliband has admitted he looks less like a Prime Minister than David Cameron – and highlighted his resemblance to Wallace of Wallace and Gromit fame.Declaring that ‘there’s more to politics than the photo op’, the Labour leader attempted to portray himself as a politician of substance, compared with Mr Cameron’s political ‘posturing’ and focus on appearance.But within minutes of finishing his speech yesterday, it emerged Labour is to hire an £80,000-a-year spin doctor to improve the way Mr Miliband looks on television.And critics pointed out that he left the country this week – missing a debate on the Ukraine plane crash in the process – for a photo opportunity with US President Barack Obama.

- 319. Miliband's growing reliance on unions exposed: Labour's paymasters provide 77% of party's funding
Ed Miliband's growing dependence on Labour’s union paymasters was laid bare yesterday as it was revealed that the barons are providing 77 per cent of the party’s funding.Figures released by the Electoral Commission watchdog revealed that the Unite union, led by far-Left firebrand Len McCluskey, was again Labour’s biggest donor, contributing £772,195 between April and June.In total, the unions gave Labour more than £2.4million in the second quarter, out of a total of just over £3million, which included lump sums of £485,830 from the GMB and £458,080 from Unison.Labour’s reliance on union cash is particularly stark since the figures also show that Labour is in a staggering amount of debt, with outstanding loans of £12.8million, compared with £2.6million for the Tories. The party was forced to increase its overdraft facilities by £2.4million earlier this year with the troubled Co-operative Bank.
