- 273. 'Disney World can keep better track of its visitors than Britain': Immigration policy attacked after report reveals figures rely on counting just 12 people a day
Britain is less able to keep track of its visitors than Disney World, it was claimed last night, as a scathing report exposed the failings of official immigration statistics.Crucial estimates of arrivals from overseas rely on random interviews carried out with just 12 people passing through ports and airports each day – and even they may be lying, MPs said.Ministers were warned they should not base their controversial immigration target – to limit population growth to the tens of thousands every year – on such shaky figures.

- 274. Outside the EU, Britain can be a beacon for free trade | CapX
The cat is out the bag! Despite recent scaremongering from Gordon Brown, Nick Clegg and vested interests supporting an ever closer union, a strong consensus is developing that – so long as we choose the right trade policies – the UK has nothing to fear from leaving the European Union.Indeed there is a great deal of evidence to suggest we could become more prosperous and successful if we chose Brexit.Groups such as Business for Britain have said that an unreformed EU will hold back the UK from greater economic growth and prosperity; just last week Europhile campaign group Open Europe admitted that so long as we had the right policies Britain would be successful – and last year in a seminal piece of detailed research the Mayor of London Chief Economic Advisor, Dr Gerard Lyons, reported that with a pro-business approach the UK could have better economic outcomes than from remaining in an unreformed EU.

- 275. Conservatives in crisis: Will John Major's be the last ever Tory government? | Mail Online
David Cameron doesn’t understand why he is distrusted by so many Tory voters and media pundits — not to mention MPs in his own party.Whenever he opens a newspaper, he finds commentators on the Left and the Right attacking him.Whenever he turns on the radio, he hears a Tory backbencher moaning about the Coalition’s progress. For many of Cameron’s critics, the attitude towards him is, at best, one of distrust, and at worst, contempt. But what should worry him the most is that, particularly in the past week, it has been people from the blue corner of politics who have been accusing him of being an out-of-touch toff. The Prime Minister believes, not unreasonably, that he has inherited the most difficult circumstances of nearly all of his post-war predecessors, and can’t understand why suddenly he has so many critics.

- 276. The German surplus
Let us talk today about the German surplus. There it stands, enormous, giving Germany a great sense of achievement and power. No wonder so many Germans want to keep the Euro. They associate it with high levels of exports throughout the EU, and rising cash balances as they seek payment for their goods. In 2010 Germany exported 179 billion Euros more than it imported. 60% of its exports were to the rest of the EU.It leads Germans to say to other Euro members, you can be like us. Work as hard as we do, set realistic wages, and you too can have a surplus like ours. The German surplus is matched by the southern states’ combined deficits. Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Italy had a combined deficit about as large as Germany’s combined surplus. They like Germany do a lot of trade within the EU. They recognise that Germany has become more competitive than them. They want a way to pay for the goods they buy from Germany. They seek loans or grants from the surplus country to pay the bills. Germany is not keen to send them grants, and is trying to restrict the borrowing. The southern states are forced in to austerity measures, to curb their appetite for German products.

- 277. The case for Swedish-style tax transparency – Telegraph Blogs
I'm half-attracted by Polly Toynbee's suggestion that all data held by the government, including tax returns, should be open to the public. Polly thinks that Nordic-style transparency would lead to Nordic-style income equality, but I'm not sure she's right. In any country, of course, some people will vote out of resentment. That is their tragedy: envy is an ugly and debilitating condition, but it is not nearly as widespread as its sufferers believe. The recent anger over top rates of pay had far more to do with the sense that some financiers were being rewarded for failure than with a general dislike of wealth. Nobody much minded gazillion-pound bonuses while their own ISAs were rising in value. It was only when their taxes were used to prop up incompetent banks that people objected. And who can blame them?

- 279. On EU, is Miliband ignorant or deliberately dishonest - The Commentator
Power is being transferred all the time to the EU. Every new Directive and regulation gives the EU more power and the UK government less. Mr Miliband has no intention of holding a referendum on it despite his promise.Mr Miliband sat firmly on the fence the other day in his speech on a referendum. The bottom line, we were told, was a referendum would be unlikely between 2015 and 2020 if Labour win the election. The Mirror can say that means a vote is possible, and the FT can reassure business (just the Europhile kind of course) that there will be no referendum. The problem with the policy is that it is based on a lie. It assumes no powers are currently passing to the EU, and that no powers will pass to the EU in the next Parliament.

- 281. Russell Brand loses his temper when asked how much his home cost | Daily Mail Online
Russell Brand lost his temper after he was asked how much he pays to rent his London home, which is believed to be a £5,000-a-month bachelor pad.The comedian, 39, yesterday joined hundreds of tenants from the New Era Estate in east London, who marched on Downing Street because they have been threatened with eviction. But Mr Brand, who claims 'profit is a filthy word' despite being worth £9million, called a journalist a 'snide' because he asked the value of his home and how much he pays in rent. The star has been calling for an anti-capitalist revolution in a series of video blogs filmed in a flat in trendy Hoxton, a £5,000-a-month property where he is understood to live.

- 284. Free Schools: the stake in the heart of the Progressive vampire – Telegraph Blogs
Last night I saw the future of education in Britain – and it worked. The occasion was the launch of Katharine Birbalsingh’s free school in Lambeth, South London. As a local parent I was naturally very interested in this because at the moment round these parts you have two options when your kids turn 11: either you consign them to the dustbin of whichever failing state school you’re unlucky enough to get them into. Or you consign yourself to an old age of misery and penury by forking out for one of the many excellent local private schools.
