97. Labour is the 'nasty party' now and Jeremy Corbyn's hate mob could destroy us | Daily Mail...
There should be plenty to cheer about for Labour this week, but no one should get carried away as they remain very much in the danger zone and any short-term boost masks a much bigger problem.

98. Labour are leaving Wales behind | Local Government
Overwhelmingly residents in Wales are facing an increase in Council Tax this month. Overwhelmingly in England there is a freeze or a reduction. In some places in Wales the increase is over 3.5%. In England that level of increase would require approval in a referendum. No English council has decided to chance it.But in Wales there is no need to get such approval from residents. The Labour-run Welsh Assembly Government oppose it. Plaid Cymru's Assembly member Llyr Huws Gruffydd agrees it would be"inappropriate."The Conservative's Shadow Local Government Minister in the Welsh Assembly Janet Finch-Saunders says:In 2010-11, local authorities in Wales spent over £630,000 on official cars and chauffeurs. Rhondda Cynon Taf and Blaenau Gwent each spent £90,000, while Bridgend spent £75,000 and Neath Port Talbot £70,000. I wonder whether the Minister was aware of those figures until I mentioned them. Local authorities spent an average of £1.5 million on printing and paper costs, but Swansea spent £0.5 million. Given that this is public money, this kind of information should be made available through online publishing, to enable processes to be examined and efficiencies to be identified.Labour Assembly member Jenny Rathbone opposes this, saying residents mustn't be "bombarded" with information. So it is better to keep spending secret. On Carmarthenshire Council, run by Independents and Labour, a blogger was arrested for filming a council meeting using her mobile phone, and led away in handcuffs

In an interview on BBC Newsnight last night, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham admitted that his party would put the ideology of socialised care ahead of patient choice and quality of healthcare. He also slammed the Coalition government for increasing private sector involvement in the service by 1.5 percent, despite the previous Labour administration increasing private involvement by 4.4 percent during their tenure.

103. Labour's election strategy in tatters: 'Cost of living' fears groundless as wages rise | Mail...
Ed Miliband faces a fresh crisis as his ‘cost of living card’ evaporates ahead of the election.Figures out later this week are expected to show that pay rises are now outstripping inflation for the first time in six years. This means Labour’s entire election strategy – to blame the Coalition for presiding over a ‘cost of living crisis’ – will effectively become redundant. At the weekend Chancellor George Osborne used a speech in the US to crow that Labour were ‘wrong about the past and they are wrong about the future’.And Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg used his monthly Press conference to lambast Labour for having created the squeeze on living standards in the first place by ‘crashing’ the economy.

105. Mother of union boss love child fixes MPs for Labour: New scandal as McCluskey gives...
The union baron accused of Commons seat rigging is at the centre of a new scandal after a former mistress who gave birth to his child when he was married was given a top job in his union.Unite union leader Len McCluskey’s ex-lover, Jennie Formby, was last month given the £75,000-a-year post of Unite political director, with the task of getting more union supporters picked as Labour Parliamentary candidates. She won the job after leading the public defence of Left-winger Mr McCluskey, dubbed ‘Red Len’ by critics, who was accused of trying to rig a Labour selection contest in Falkirk, Scotland, for another union ally and friend, Karie Murphy.

107. Is Ed Miliband for or against a fuel crisis? - Telegraph
Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite, the union which has called a strike of well-paid fuel tanker drivers. When fuel tanker drivers last went on strike, in 2000, Tony Blair feared it could cost him his job. He admitted afterwards that the speed with which the dispute escalated had taken him by surprise. The Coalition is not making the same mistake. With the Unite union still more than a week away from its threatened stoppage, contingency planning appears well advanced. The Government’s civil contingencies committee has met and military personnel are being trained to deliver fuel. Motorists have been sensibly advised by Downing Street to make sure they have full tanks for the Easter break, prompting accusations of scaremongering. This is one of those instances where the Government is damned if it does, damned if it doesn’t.David Cameron will be acutely aware that with the Tory party’s poll ratings falling after an unpopular Budget, the prospect of garages running out of petrol is hardly an appealing one. And as George Osborne warned yesterday, the impact on a struggling economy could be devastating. The political risks to the Government if the strike goes ahead are – as Mr Blair will testify – all too real. But perhaps even more vulnerable is Ed Miliband, the Labour leader. For this dispute will throw into sharp relief Labour’s unhealthy dependence on Unite. The union keeps Labour afloat financially. Between 2007 – when it was formed through the merger of Amicus and the TGWU – and the 2010 general election, it gave Labour just under £11 million. Nearly half of all Labour MPs are sponsored by Unite. In return it has a big say in the party’s policy-making. A former Labour general secretary has said: “It is absolutely fair to describe the Labour Party as the political wing of Unite.”

109. Budget 2014: Ed Miliband's wretched, incoherent response showed that he is not ready to be PM - Dan Hodges, Telegraph Blogs
Every Budget begins with a prologue. “This is a Budget for jobs”, “this is a Budget for growth”, etc. This afternoon George Osborne claimed his was a Budget for the “maker, the doer and the saver”. As he said it I half expected the old theme to Record Breakers to strike up in the background. But the Chancellor was wrong. It was not a Budget for the maker. Or the doer. Or the saver. It was the Budget that proved conclusively Ed Miliband is not yet ready to be prime minister of this country.

110. Ignore the Spin: 56 Pubs Shut Per Week Under Labour - Guy Fawkes' blog
Labour MP Toby Perkins may well be simple, but that does not excuse his attempts to re-write history. The “Shadow Pubs Minister” has sent out a ham-fisted attack about the “great pub scandal”:“Labour is forcing a Parliamentary debate on backing local pubs, pressing the Government to act as research shows 26 pubs are closing every week. Too many pubs across Britain are closing their doors and we urgently need action but ministers are dragging their feet. Pubs are vital hubs in communities up and down the country.”Perkins, a renowned wally, has accused BIS of “dithering”. But lets just rewind a little…The real “great pub scandal” was that Labour did more to hamstring the pub industry than any other government.

111. The 'Un-Credible Shrinking Man' broadcast: proof that Labour has gone insane – Telegraph...
Labour’s latest party political broadcast has just been uploaded on YouTube. It is a real broadcast, produced at considerable expense by a political party that aspires to be the government of this country. And it proves the Labour Party is slowly but surely going clinically insane. It’s not just the ludicrous caricature of the Conservatives – including a gratuitous dig at the late Baroness Thatcher. Or the infantile portrayal of Nick Clegg. Or the fact it seeks to treat the electorate like they’re sniggering schoolchildren. It proves conclusively that Labour is no longer serious about winning the next election. It has no serious strategy, or serious policy, or any intention of convincing the nation it is serious about governing.Instead the people who run it – or pretend to run it – are playing a game. They are living out a self-indulgent student fantasy in which they get to strike poses, and shout slogans, and scream “Toff!” at every passing Tory they see.

112. Small wonder Labour are enthusiastic tax-avoiders - the party is in dire financial straits
Today's Times contains an awkward revelation for Ed Miliband - despite turning a surplus last year, Labour managed to organise its tax affairs so efficiently that the party paid no corporation tax whatsoever.Of course, there's no suggestion they did anything illegal, but given Miliband's regular drum-beating about the immorality of tax avoidance it is more than ironic to see his party's accountants engaged in such nifty footwork. Had they paid tax on the headline surplus, their bill would have been over half a million pounds.
