353. Ed's living wage 'is a disaster for jobs' says former Blair aide behind minimum wage | Mail...
Ed Miliband’s plan to encourage businesses to pay a ‘living wage’ would put 300,000 young people out of work, a former aide to Tony Blair warned yesterday. The Labour leader will today announce that he would offer tax breaks to firms who pay their employees £8.80 an hour in London and £7.65 in the rest of the UK – far higher than the minimum wage, which is £6.31 an hour. But John McTernan, who helped Mr Blair introduce the minimum wage in 1999, warned yesterday that the policy would be a disaster for jobs and hit young people particularly hard.

355. Diane Abbott’s real offence is to deny children the best start in life - Telegraph
We have a choice, don’t we? About Diane Abbott. Not in determining whether or not her words “White people love playing 'divide and rule’ ” are racist; they plainly are. But in deciding what we do next. For almost anyone else in public life, the judgment “Your remark can be construed as racist” would be translated instantly into “Thus: you are racist”, at which point the speaker would be ushered rapidly through the door marked “Exit”. But this is what Miss Abbott had to say, during a discussion about Hackney’s Mossbourne Academy, one of the most successful examples of what can be achieved by a school liberated from local education authority control: “We know what parent power means in London. In practice, it means giving power to small groups of white middle-class parents, or if not to capture by one ethnic group as opposed to another, the best organised. Actually, if you want to empower the breadth of the parent body in inner-city areas you have to look to the local education authority.”In other words, when a Hackney school started to deliver first-class education to some of the most deprived students in the country, Miss Abbott spoke against the political reform which made such schools possible, and, weirdly, sought to identify particular races with particular behaviours.

Commenting on Andy Burnham’s upcoming speech on Labour’s new approach to public health, Communications Manager at the Adam Smith Institute, Kate Andrews, said:Labour’s proposed restrictions on alcohol, sugar and tobacco are deeply illiberal and may even be counterproductive. 359. Labour's claim of TfL "surplus cash" is nonsense | Local Government
The Labour Party have been busy campaigning outside tube stations today with the message that the fares increase is wrong as Boris Johnson already "takes more in fares from you than he needs." Boris supporters have also been outside tube stations with a leaflet which backs the tube upgrades that are taking place as key for economic growth.Commuters are being told by the Ken Livingstone campaign that TfL "has amassed hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus cash." Really? It looks to me from TfL's last Annual Report that there is debt of £6.3 billion and an annual interest bill of £400 million.

360. The Axing of Gove: Cameron at his most cowardly | Speaker's Chair
They got their man in the end. Every teacher up and down the country has been rejoicing. Or so we’re led to believe.Which has always been part of Michael Gove’s problem. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of teachers (they’re usually the head teachers) who have publically backed him and his reforms. Groupthink acts as a natural disinfectant to any would be dissenters.

361. Top Rate Cut Raised £9bn and Proved Labour Wrong on 50p Tax
The reduction of the top rate of UK income tax from 50p to 45p, on earnings over £150,000, has led to an increase in the tax take. The tax cut was brought in at the insistence of the Conservatives, despite Labour predictions that it would lead to reduced revenues. The figures were released by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and show that in the year since the rate was cut revenues have increased by £9bn to £49bn. The increase has more than made up for the £5bn reduction associated with the government taking the two million lowest earners out of tax altogether. When the Chancellor, George Osborne, cut the 50p rate, the Treasury calculated the policy would cost the exchequer £100m. Instead, the move reduced tax avoidance and has turned into a large cash windfall for the cash strapped Treasury.

363. What do the election results tell us?
Labour won 2158 seats, Conservatives 1005 and Lib Dems 431. Congratulations to Labour on their success. Thank you to all those outgoing Councillors who have worked hard and who now have been asked to stand down.SNP and Plaid came fourth and fifth, with the Greens picking up 40 seats in sixth place, or fourth place amongst UK wide parties. The English Democrats lost their 2 Councillors and UKIP made no net gains, staying with 9.This leaves Labour controlling 75 Councils, the Conservatives 45, the Lib Dems 6 and SNP 2. No other party controls a Council. Turnout was a very low 32%.All parties and anyone who believes in democracy should be worried that 68% did not think it worthwhile voting. There was plenty of choice on the ballot papers in many places. If people still did not think there was sufficient choice they could have stood themselves. So why was there such a mass abstention?

368. Polls, polls, polls
It’s the voters turn to say what they think. In France it looks as if an other incumbent who has presided over the Euro crisis, another supporter of Euro austerity, is about to lose office. Latest polls shows Mr Sarkozy trailing Mr Hollande by between 6% and 11%. If Mr Hollande wins, expect rapid moves to bring him on board for the austerity treaty of late last year, sweetened by some kind 0f Growth package to be agreed with Germany and the Commission. Do not expect a radical change in the EU’s approach to the Euro.In Greece the two larger parties of past elections and the last Parliament saw much lower poll ratings in recent months. Pasok, the current ruling party, saw its rating slump from 38% in January 2011, to around 14% in the last permitted polls. New Democracy has had a smaller fall, from 30% to 23%. They do not allow polls close to the election.
