305. Margaret Thatcher dead: Maggie did more for workers than her Leftie critics ever did | Mail...
Perhaps the greatest canard about the Thatcher years is that she was merely the champion of the wealthy. But this is nonsense. She did not win three elections by appealing just to millionaires, writes DOMINIC SANDBROOK.

306. Labour caused our problems with energy prices and social mobility. Now they want to make them worse
The BBC/Guardianista Left seems to have become fascinated by the idea that the unpleasant squeeze on family budgets as pay rises lag behind prices could be magicked away by arm-twisting, strong arming or requiring, by law, employers to raise wages. Sadly they have forgotten, and would like the rest of us to forget, that it was the Blair-Brown-Balls-Miliband gang who ran up on behalf of us all the huge debts which faced George Osborne when he came into office in 2010. The debts are still there, indeed they have increased, and so too has the interest on them. That is why wages are lagging behind prices.

307. Labour councillors denounce Ed Miliband's support for cuts | Local Government
It is not just Labour MPs who rely on the trade unions to fund their election campaigns but also Labour councillors. In return the trade unions have reps on the Local Government Committee of constituency parties which choose council candidates. So it is not surprising that Labour councillors are anxious to toe the union line. So they have been attacking their leader Ed Miliband's support for spending cuts and public sector pay freeze.

308. We'll ditch married tax break, says Ed Balls
Labour will scrap the Conservatives’ ‘perverse and unfair’ new Ł1,000 transferable tax allowance for married couples, Ed Balls announced last night. The shadow Chancellor said a Labour government would reverse the Government’s proposal to restore recognition for the institution in the tax system, and spend the money to help fund a reintroduction of the 10p tax rate.Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, the staunchest champion of marriage in the Cabinet, condemned the announcement.Only the 24 million basic rate taxpayers will benefit, though David Cameron has signalled he wants to go further if re-elected with a Conservative majority.Polls show overwhelming support for the new allowance, though it is opposed by both Labour and the Liberal Democrats. A recent YouGov poll found that 62 per cent of people back the idea, with just 20 per cent against.Assessing Mr Osborne's tax policies ahead of next week's Budget he said: ‘Personally, I think that first of all, George Osborne should first of all admit the 50p tax cut at the top was a big mistake.

I mentioned in previous posts the BBC’s refusal to report the Governor of the Bank of England’s remarks about capping bank market share and bonuses…..it looks like they knew but refused to publish it because it was too ‘Tory friendly’…….The BBC now are eager to examine Carney’s remarks…but the BBC’s Chris Mason seems to have forgotten that he is supposed to be impartial and not be pushing Labour’s narrative as in this entirely negative, one sided, Labour’s side, look at Carney….

A Labour MP has demanded renewed and wider inquiries into the Paedophile Information Exchange amid fears that government files proving it received taxpayers’ cash have been shredded. An ex-civil servant has previously claimed the government gave money to the PIE – which called paedophiles ‘ordinary, decent, sensible human beings’ – during the 1970s.Home Secretary Theresa May has asked Mark Sedwill, the permanent secretary at the Home Office, to investigate after details of the claims were passed on by Labour MP Tom Watson.Last night Mr Watson welcomed the probe but also demanded a wider-ranging police inquiry into the PIE.

311. Labour supporters turn on Livingstone | Local Government
Over the past week scarcely a day has gone by without an impassioned attack on Ken Livingstone by a Labour supporter. Nick Cohen in The Observer writes:I will vote for Labour assembly members, then Green, Lib Dem or something equally silly for mayor, and offer no second preference. If Johnson wins by one vote, I'll say that was Labour's fault for putting forward Livingstone, not mine. We own the politicians. They don't own us.Cohen feels that Livingstone "is a hypocrite worthy of the pen of a Swift or Dickens." Livingstone "is now the champion of the suffering 99% and enemy of the despised 1%."

312. Osborne throws the kitchen sink at Balls... and Balls throws it back at Osborne The Tory Diary
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown committed their party to Conservative spending plans when they fought the 1997 election. Their shrinking of the target at which their enemies could fire set the tone for the next 20 years, followed as it was by one of biggest landslide victories in British history. Voters, the orthodoxy held, are always fearful that Labour, once translated from opposition to Government, will raise taxes more than a Tory Government; and the Conservatives (once the same translation has happened) will cut spending more than a Labour Government.

313. Labour lost a million jobs, says Bank chief - Telegraph
More than a million people may have lost their jobs unnecessarily because the Labour Government failed to act on warnings from the Bank of England which could have prevented the recession, Sir Mervyn King claims. The Bank governor claimed that action by Gordon Brown’s administration had been “too late” to prevent the banking crisis causing a recession, which led to the sharp increase in unemployment.Sir Mervyn said that he argued “from the beginning of 2008” that British banks required more than Ł100 billion of extra funding to avert a crisis.Mr Brown and other senior ministers failed to bail out the banks until October 2008, which was “too late to prevent the financial crisis from spilling over into the world economy”, he claimed. He said that the delay in intervening, and the subsequent recession led to unemployment in Britain rising by over a million people.

Female MPs who complain about how macho politics are not the victims of sexism but simply ‘useless’, Ann Widdecombe has claimed. The outspoken former Tory minister dismissed the idea that Westminster was biased against women, and insisted both sexes were ‘roughed up’ during debates. In remarks likely divide opinion in Parliament, Miss Widdecombe said women must not go into politics with a ‘sense of grievance’.She lashed out against the 101 female New Labour MPs swept into Parliament by Tony Blair;s landslide election in 1997.Miss Widdecombe said too many of them thought they were treated rudely by opponents because they were women – when I fact they just were not very good. She said: ‘I vividly remember that about six months after the Blair Babes came in – you may remember them? 101 of them came in and I always thought they might as well have had the 101 Dalmations.

315. GEOFFREY LEVY SATURDAY ESSAY: The man who hated Britain: Red Ed's pledge to bring back socialism is a homage to his Marxist father. So what did Miliband Snr really believe in?
The man who hated Britain: Red Ed's pledge to bring back socialism is a homage to his Marxist father. So what did Miliband Snr really believe in? The answer should disturb everyone who loves this countryOn a hot summer day, a young man made his way alone to Highgate Cemetery in North London to make a lifelong vow.Solemnly, he stood at the grave of Karl Marx at a moment when, in his own words, 'the cemetery was utterly deserted . . . I remember standing in front of the grave, fist clenched, and swearing my own private oath that I would be faithful to the workers' cause'.The year was 1940. The young man was Ralph Miliband, a Jewish immigrant who, with his father, had fled to London from Belgium just weeks earlier to escape the Nazi Holocaust.Miliband, father of Ed and David Miliband, died in 1994, aged 70, soon after the publication of his last book, Socialism For A Sceptical Age. In it, the venerated Marxist philosopher and academic continued to espouse his lifelong 'socialist' cause.

317. Vince Cable, the Psammead Business Secretary - Left Watch (ConHome)
Readers may recognise the two faces above. One is an ancient, grumpy and rather self-centred creature which claims to know secrets unavailable to ordinary mortals. The other is the Psammead, from Edith Nesbit's Five Children and It.The cantankerous Psammead promises its audience that their fantastical wishes can come true - and then brings them crashing down to earth within a few hours. His uneasy coalition with the five children who discover it living in a sand pit is an uneasy one - without him, they would never be able to go on their adventures, but in return they have to put up with his constant grumblingand the limits of his powers. I suspect you're starting to see that the resemblance with Vince extends beyond the eyebrows. The Business Secretary is playing out his Psammead role again today. Only a couple of days since George Osborne's positive headlines about the progress the economy is making, and there is more good news from the employment statistics today, but Vince has brought the dark clouds rolling back in.

Benefits will be squeezed for three years as George Osborne tries to lay down dividing lines with Labour before the next election. The Chancellor vowed to return ‘fairness’ to the benefits system by capping rises in working age benefits at 1 per cent from April 2013, half the rate of inflation. And he said the Government would introduce a Bill to enshrine the cap in law – forcing the Opposition into a corner over whether to oppose limits in welfare which polls show are popular with the public.
