257. Livingstone wasn't moved to tears by real Londoners supporting his candidacy. They were actors....
The headline above tells the story.Labour Uncut's Atu Hatwal has highlighted it today. It was in yesterday's Guardian diary but seems to have got little traction. As Hatwal writes:"At the time the explanation given to reporters was that Ken was moved by the genuine words of Londoners and the responsibility he felt to win the election for them.Stirring stuff. Shame it was rubbish."

258. That was no light touch regulation – that was wrong touch regulation
The way Labour and the BBC framed the debate yesterday about financial regulation was typical of the skewed view of the what is going on that now passes for public debate in this country. The Labour spokesman on Newsnight tried yet again to blame Margaret Thatcher for the crisis for “deregulating” the banks in 1986. If that policy was so wrong why did they not reverse it in 1997? If it was so bad, why weren”t the banks in financial trouble ten years later on the eve of Labour coming to power? Did they not notice that she kept in place strong regulation of capital and cash by the Bank of England, which worked? No bank over lent and overstretched in the way they have been doing this century because they were not allowed to. As Michael Fallon rightly pointed out, it was Gordon Brown who put in a new system of regulation in 1997. It was that system of regulation which failed to control the over expansion of bank activities with too little cash and capital in some cases to support them.

259. DOMINIC SANDBROOK: Miliband's Marxist father and the real reason he wants to drag us back to the nightmare 1970's
What we saw on Monday was the real Ed Miliband, the idealistic son of a North London Marxist who believes there is no problem that state intervention cannot fix, says DOMINIC SANDBROOK.

260. Voters say David Cameron is cruel . . . but Ed Miliband is wet, thick and sexless | Mail Online
Ed Miliband was left red-faced last night after voters rejected his boast that he is ‘more intelligent’ than David Cameron.According to a Mail on Sunday poll, the Prime Minister is seen as more than twice as intelligent as the Labour leader, who is lagging behind UKIP’s Nigel Farage in the brainbox ratings. Even more embarrassing, Miliband is regarded as ‘thicker, wetter and more sexless’ than Cameron, the Lib Dems’ Nick Clegg and Farage.

261. Ed Miliband shows he doesn't trust the British public | Leo McKinstry | Columnists | Comment |...
LABOUR leader Ed Miliband constantly trumpets his commitment to “nation” politics. Tragically that nation is not ours. It is the European Union’s federal superstate. This is the truth behind his wilfully obscure rhetoric about Britain’s relationship with the EU.

262. Labour MP Austin Mitchell: 'Even if we selected a raving alcoholic sex paedophile we wouldn't lose Grimsby'
Veteran Labour MP Austin Mitchell has dismissed Ukip’s chances of winning the Great Grimsby constituency at the general election, saying that Labour would win the hotly contested seat “even” if it had selected a “raving alcoholic sex paedophile” as its candidate. The long-serving Labour MP, who is stepping down at the election, has represented the constituency in north Lincolnshire since 1977 and Labour has held it since 1945, but Nigel Farage’s party polled strongly in the area in recent local elections and in the 2014 European election, while a recent Lord Ashcroft poll suggested it only trailed Labour in the seat by one per cent.

263. Ed Miliband savaged in phone-in - Telegraph
Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, has been savaged in a radio phone-in, with callers telling him he is not up to the job and will never be prime minister.Mr Miliband faced several personal attacks from callers to BBC Radio Five Live. He also endured the embarrassment of a caller mistaking him for his brother, David.Despite opinion polls putting his party neck-and-neck with the Conservatives, the Labour leader has faced persistent questions about his performance since defeating his brother to take the leadership in 2010.His appearance on the Victoria Derbyshire show today was meant to highlight his call for greater pride in British goods and manufacturers. However, it rapidly became a litmus test of his personal appeal, as several callers strongly criticised his performance and abilities. One caller told Mr Miliband he was “a laughing stock” who could not win the next general election.

264. Sore Balls in a squeeze | Left Watch | ConservativeHome
The Independent headlines its interview with Ed Balls today: "Lib Dems should leave the Coalition and join us". This is the best news angle that can be found from it, though the Shadow Chancellor is scarcely likely to have said: "So you're asking what I'd do if the Lib Dems quit government, betrayed Cameron, voted with us and offered to help make me Shadow Chancellor? It's obvious, isn't it: I'd tell them to get lost!" However, he is careful to make the obligatory reference to Nick Clegg having to go in any such circumstances. I think Balls's response is a means of spinning himself as more coalition-friendly - and less tribal - than his critics assert without conceding nothing of substance: if he'd said he was open to coalition after the next election that would indeed have been news.

265. Labour Friends of Iran - Guy Fawkes' blog
This disturbing turn of events was compounded by Angela Eagle popping up on the Daily Politics afterwards to spin for the Iranian regime. When it was pointed out that the new President has called for the “extermination” of protesters she replied “I said he was more moderate I didn’t say he was a democrat”. Perhaps, as a lesbian, Angela should visit Tehran to see just how moderate Labour’s new chums really are.

266. Labour voters - and even The Independent - support IDS' benefits cap, leaving Miliband and the...
YouGov found (£) (PDF) that 69% of British people, including two-thirds of Labour supporters, either support the Coalition's benefits cap of £26,000 per household or think it should be even stricter. Only 16% want a more generous cap or no cap at all. The cap is one of the reasons why welfare reform is the most popular part of the Coalition's programme. In times of plenty hard-working families are more willing to indulge a wasteful benefits system but when the "squeezed middle" is facing a decade of flat or falling incomes there is no support for any indulgence of any kind.

267. The week that proved Red Ed is totally out of touch with the British people | Mail Online
During various crises over the past two years, Ed Miliband has been able to rely on the complete loyalty of his party. As one Labour insider said to me recently: ‘Even those of us who originally wanted his brother to be party leader see there’s nothing to be gained by criticising Ed.’Mr Miliband’s position is safe until the next General Election. Indeed, he appears invincible if the opinion polls (which give Labour a 12-point lead) are to be believed. But is he really? His abject and pathetic Commons performance on Wednesday, after David Cameron’s historic promise of an in-out referendum on Europe, should make even his most loyal supporters question his political judgment.
