225. Wages are too low
Let me make common cause today with the labour movement. Wages in the UK are too low. Instead of spending so much time complaining about the pay of a minority who are well paid in the private sector, maybe we should spend more time asking how more people can enjoy higher pay. I am not one of those hypocritical commentators on a good salary always urging pay restraint on others. Before the labour movement gets too excited, however, I do believe a couple of other things about pay. I do not think you can legislate successfully for higher pay. It has to be earned. The problem with minimum wage legisaltion is if you set it too high you drive jobs away, and if you set it too low it has no benefiical impact. If you get it somewhere in the middle it does not deliver great living standards, and may still encourage non compliance and a larger black economy. Labour’s minimum wage has left many people on low pay and in receipt of benefit top ups so they have a more reasonable income.

During Owen Paterson’s vocal conversation with David Cameron in defence of his record as Environment Minister after learning he was being sacked, Paterson reportedly said: ‘this will be a kick in the teeth to 12 million countryside voters… you are making a big mistake’.There is already mounting evidence to suggest Paterson could be right. Judging by the two standing ovations that Paterson went on to receive last Friday at the Game Fair at Blenheim Palace (at the mere mention of his name), Charles Moore commented that ‘you could almost see the disaffected Tory voters fleeing to Ukip across the tent’.

By Matthew Barrett Blue Labour - the new thing in left-wing politics - is interesting. Blue Labour is about the Left rediscovering...

239. David Cameron's EU referendum law a 'dead parrot' as Labour and Lib Dems kill off in-out vote prospect
However, he could not bring forward government legislation on the idea because Nick Clegg said the Lib Dems would not back it.Instead, Tory MP James Wharton took it through the Commons but it has floundered in the Lords.Today peers voted by 245 votes to 158, majority 87, to amend the wording of the question that would be put to voters in the referendum in 2017.It means the European Union (Referendum) Bill will have to go back to the Commons for further consideration - eating up more of the little remaining parliamentary time for its consideration.Lord Hill, Conservative leader in the Lords, added: ‘Labour and the Liberal Democrats have today done yet another U-turn on their position on an In-Out referendum on the European Union.‘Having accepted this Bill in the House of Commons, they are now trying to kill it in the Lords. Having stayed mum in the Commons, they have now been revealed in their true colours.‘Although they daren’t admit they do not think the British people should have their say, they are trying to do their dirty work unnoticed in the Lords.

240. Ed backs off showdown with unions: Miliband accused of watering down attempts to weaken stranglehold on party
Ed Miliband was accused of watering down attempts to weaken the stranglehold of Labour’s union paymasters on his party last night amid claims that his Spring showdown with the unions will last just two hours. The Labour leader has billed the meeting with the union barons in March as an historic event that will redraw the relationship between union and party members. The changes were deemed necessary after accusations that the Unite union attempted to fix a selection in the Falkirk constituency. Labour are also reeling from publicity about Unite’s bully boy tactics during the strike at the Grangemouth petrochemical plant, when union officials intimidated staff and their families.Last weekend, it also emerged that another company boss was hounded at his family home after he announced plans to move a transport operation. Matthew Ingle from a village near Skipton, North Yorks, had to hire security guards and sought a High Court injunction after protestors descended on his home and bad mouthed him to his neighbours.
