193. Boris blasts the opposition: Labour want to return to the 'nasty, racist 1970s', Ukip to the 1950s and the Greens would rewind to the bronze age
The London Mayor, who today launched the Tory campaign in the capital, said the Labour leader was 'hostile' to people who wanted to own their own home and would embark on an 'orgy of regulation'.

labours-attempts-to-woo-lib-dems-like-vince-cable-are-clumsy-but-importantThere is a certain amount of eye-rolling and sniggering at Westminster over Labour’s rather clumsy efforts to woo Vince Cable, and at Mr Cable’s response. Partly this is because the whole thing is just a bit too obvious: if Labour really thought they had a chance of luring Mr Cable into some sort of illicit…

195. Chris Bryant's immigration speech isn't just a car crash, it's a full on, bollard-smashing...
During the 2010 General Election campaign, a Labour photo opp with Gordon Brown was interrupted by a car colliding with a bus stop. At that point, I thought it was as bad as things could get - how could any metaphorical car crash by a politician possibly outdo the real thing?Chris Bryant is evidently more imaginative, and has today embarked on a one man mission to prove me wrong. Belted into the driver's seat of a rhetorical red mini metro, he careered through the political media, ploughing into bollards, oncoming traffic, tourists and both mounted cavalrymen outside Horseguards.Just to ensure the job was done properly, he brought his political road-trip to a halt by effecting a head-on collision with an Alan Partridge-style joke about how easy it is to mistakenly think obese women are pregnant. The metaphorical car is definitely a write-off.

196. Trust the people to decide on Europe? Whatever next! - Telegraph
The public are perfectly capable of casting an informed vote – but Labour won’t let them.I don’t often get to read the entire transcript of debates in the House of Lords, but the other day I found myself mesmerised by the one on the EU referendum that was initiated last Friday by the thriller writer Michael Dobbs. I came to the juddering climax of the text, and put it down breathless and stunned – staring pop-eyed at the window as I grasped a new geopolitical reality. It is quite obvious that Labour is not going to give the public a vote on Europe. Miliband has plainly made up what passes for his mind.

199. In every area of our public life, the Left is losing the argument – Telegraph Blogs
The facts of life are Conservative – as Labour’s smartest minds now realiseIt is now widely accepted that the years of New Labour government were an almost unalloyed national disaster. Whichever measure you take – moral, social, economic, or the respect in which Britain is held in the world – we went into reverse.Nevertheless, historians may come to judge that these 13 years of Labour misrule served a vital purpose. In retrospect, the Brown/Blair period may be seen as a prolonged experiment which taught the liberal Left that its ideas cannot work, do not work, and have no chance of ever working. It takes time to ruin a country. Four years, the average period between elections, was never going to be enough. But 13 years of Left-wing government has produced a mountain of evidence that the Conservative analysis is better and more truthful.

200. Ed Balls's refusal to admit defeat on the economy is like Monty Python's Black Knight insisting that losing both arms is "just a flesh wound" | Daily Mail
Ed Balls was today likened to Monty Python’s Black Knight for refusing to admit defeat on the economy.Chancellor George Osborne mocked his Labour opponent for repeating claiming the government’s economic plan had failed despite signs of the recovery gaining momentum. In the famous scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail the Black Knight brushes off losing both arms as ‘just a flesh wound’.The political battle over the economy has heightened as growth forecasts for Britain have been upgraded.Mr Osborne yesterday used a major speech to argue the economy had ‘turned a corner’ and promised more help to cut energy, water, housing and travel costs. In the Commons, Mr Balls was ridiculed for refusing to admit his mistakes in the last Labour government, and in opposition since the election.Mr Osborne said: ‘He is increasingly like Monty Python’s Black Knight defending that bridge.‘When unemployment falls he says it’s but a scratch, when business confidence rises he says I’ve had worse, the recovery is just a flesh wound.‘The limbs are falling off his economic argument and it would be a comedy if it were not for the fact Labour’s economic policies were a tragedy.’

204. Ed Miliband's speech: nice delivery and a new "One Nation" theme - but no substance or indication of economic maturity | Left Watch - ConservativeHome
Ed Miliband finished delivering his big conference speech a short while ago. It was nicely delivered (impressively, Miliband spoke for more than an hour without notes), felt strong and purposeful, and had a positive message of solidarity: "One Nation". Indeed, Miliband said "One Nation" countless times, determined to drill home the message and audaciously take the label away from the Conservatives.

205. Benjamin Disraeli: Miliband leads the No Nation party, not the One Nation party | The Tory Diary - ConservativeHome
By Benjamin DisraeliYou cannot follow Lord Beaconsfield on Twitter, since he hasn't a clue what it is.I cannot deny that my grasp of public affairs is not as sure as it might be since, for reasons that readers of this publication will understand, I am presently incapable of taking my seat in the House of Lords. I must also confess that my mastery of the means of communication on which this modern age depends is, alas, incomplete (the mysteries of the telegraph remain a wonder to me). None the less, Mary Anne, being returned yesterday afternoon to Hughenden from her duties, has read to me a transcript of the speech of the Labour Party leader to his conference, and I am dictating this article to her by way of response.I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am by no means ill-disposed to Edward Miliband. As I say, my grasp of present events is a little tentative, but I understand from Mary Anne that my party is now in coalition with Mr Gladstone. Readers will comprehend that I find this deeply disturbing, and I see from the opinion polls that my view is widely shared: as I once said, England does not love coalitions. So I am prepared to give Mr Miliband a fair hearing. As I once told the Commons, the cause of labour is the cause of England. This is why the Conservative Party is - or should be - the party of labour, as well as the party of capital.

206. DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Flirting Labour party is bankrupt of ideas | Mail Online
Yesterday, after the benefit of a long summer of preparation, Ed Miliband delivered what was supposed to be a major speech on how Labour would return the country to economic growth. He began by at least acknowledging his party’s need for ‘new ideas to rise to the challenges facing Britain today’.But, depressingly, he then proceeded to trot out the same tired old demands for extra spending on public services and infrastructure projects without explaining how a country that is £1trillion in debt can possibly hope to pay for them. There was no acknowledgement of the need to shrink the bloated State to fund the tax cuts essential for reawakening demand in the economy.Indeed, Mr Miliband spoke of ‘cuts’ only in terms of the Coalition reducing spending ‘too far and too fast’ – when, in reality, it has barely made a start.

Three senior Labour figures were under mounting pressure last night to apologise for supporting a vile group campaigning to legalise child sex.Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman, her husband, home affairs spokesman Jack Dromey, and former Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt all held key roles in the National Council for Civil Liberties. The left-wing human rights organisation built extraordinary links with the notorious Paedophile Information Exchange during the 1970s and 80s, yet the trio refuse to comment on the NCCL’s activities or apologise for them.
