161. QUENTIN LETTS: Red Ed the genius, hiding a grenade in his trunks | Mail Online
What a genius Ed Miliband is. He came flippering into the Commons, up to his snorkel in a party-funding row. So what did the great frogman do? He ensured that almost every question at Prime Minister’s Questions was about … party funding. Man cunningly hides hand grenade down front of swimming trunks – then pulls out pin by mistake.Kaboom! What on earth was Baldrick thinking? Were I a Labour moderate I would take two slices of Mother’s Pride, spread them with thick butter and make myself a club cyanide sandwich.Labour troops were under strict orders from their Whips: ask about Tory party donors at every chance you get. Don’t ask about schools or hospitals or the economy or transport or foreign policy or business or farming or anything that might affect the voters’ lives.

163. 'Ordinary Londoners' who moved Ken Livingstone to tears were hired by an ad agency | Mail...
Ken Livingstone today admitted the party political broadcast that made him burst into tears featured Labour activists hired by an ad agency, reading a script he had already heard. The veteran politician's election team say the film made 'on behalf of ordinary Londoners' had used 28 of his supporters who were all paid expenses.Despite all this he had wept anyway at its premiere on Tuesday because he was 'only human', his spokesman said.At the time he told journalists the YouTube film was 'a real tear-jerker' and the people on screen represented 'hundreds of thousands of Londoners who desperately want a Mayor who is going to make their life easier in this city.'Revealing how the three-minute film was made, Labour said top ad agency BETC had hired people from the street who were given lines to follow.A spokesman said: 'We have a script. They film it. They are all Londoners. They are all Labour supporters. They are saying things they believe.'

165. Major parties show major panic with fake UKIP leaflets - The Commentator
Britain's two major political parties have entered into yet another stage of dirty tricks campaigning in producing and delivering what appear to be fake or disingenuous "UKIP leaflets" around the country. The Labour Party, which has previously been thought to be less affected by UKIP gains, has joined in after this weekend's revelations that Conservative Party HQ (CCHQ) was briefing journalists on the background of UKIP candidates using their Facebook and Twitter accounts.Labour's candidate in the South Shields by-election has begun to distribute leaflets in UKIP's trademark purple and yellow colours, replete with a mocked up logo that reads, "Are UKID ding?" (Are you kidding) before going on to attack the local UKIP candidate as "a career politician" and "worse than the Tories".

167. Keogh review: 11 NHS hospitals to be placed in special measures as Jeremy Hunt reveals thousands of patients needlessly died
Labour faced its ‘darkest moment’ yesterday over its stewardship of the Health Service as a devastating report laid bare an appalling catalogue of failings at 11 hospitals where ‘thousands’ of patients needlessly died.Voters are told that Labour is the only party in whose hands the NHS is safe, but David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt said the study proved the opposite to be true.Labour had presided, they said, over a culture of ‘cover-up’ where targets were more important than people and ministers’ reputations more important than care.A damning review by the NHS medical director, Sir Bruce Keogh, into 14 hospitals with higher-than-expected death rates found that all had ‘ingredients’ of Mid Staffs, the hospital where up to 1,200 died on filthy wards.

168. As Labour falters in the polls, can Ed Miliband silence the doubters? | Politics | The Observer
It hasn't been a very comfortable Christmas for Labour's leader, with Cameron basking in media praise and his own gloomy MPs beginning to murmur ominously. Tim Montgomerie, editor of the ConservativeHome website, casts doubt on the notion that Ed can pull things round as Cameron did. He thinks Ed's problem is that he is just too "odd". "In 2007 Cameron only needed a course correction, he didn't need a personality transplant," Montgomerie says. "Miliband's problems are deeper. He can deal with his 'Red Ed' problem in 2012 by moving to a sensible policy on deficit reduction. His 'Odd Ed' problem is probably impossible to fix. Voters simply think he's weird. They can't close their eyes and imagine him on the steps of Number 10," he adds."

Ed Balls’s hopes of replacing Ed Miliband as Labour leader have been ‘buried’ by his bungled Commons onslaught on George Osborne last week, a Labour MP claimed last night.Bassetlaw MP John Mann said the Shadow Chancellor’s lacklustre response to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement plans to slash welfare and raise taxes for the well-off had damaged Mr Balls’s leadership prospects – and made Mr Miliband’s position secure.Mr Mann spoke out amid claims that Mr Balls and his supporters have given up hope that either he or wife, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, could succeed Mr Miliband.

171. Ditching Ed Miliband will not change the fact that 'socialism’ has no relevance these days - Daily Telegraph
Labour wants to save its panda – but the party's problems run deeper than Ed.Uh-oh, folks, this is starting to look serious. There really does appear to be a plot to remove Ed Miliband. One paper has reported that there are 20 shadow ministers who are “on the verge” of asking him to step down. Nameless Labour MPs have said that the rebellion against Ed has reached “critical mass” – and one has a vision of fuel rods starting to shudder in a nuclear reactor. Toxic steam is spurting from the innards; cracks are showing in the casing. Any minute now the whole thing is going to go ka-boom, they say.

172. A week after Miliband's pledge to reduce union influence, the GMB boast of their Parliamentary...
Despite its practical flaws, Ed Miliband's speech on Labour's union links appears to have put off his party's crisis on the subject for now. The obscure nature of the proposals, combined with a clever attempt to bounce the issue back onto the Conservatives, mean that the scandal has simmered down. But it hasn't gone away. While he carefully avoided committing himself to a timetable, at some point the press will expect to see results - and the unions are going to start squealing if he does take meaningful action to prevent their takeover attempts.A measure of the unions' commitment to their campaign comes in the summer edition of the GMB's in-house magazine (which bizarrely appears to have stolen its logo design from Heat and Nuts). The London edition is called Candid - and it lives up to the name.On page 11, GMB General Secretary Paul Kenny attacks Parliament, calling it a "phoney democracy". And he should know - on the very next page is a spread headlined "Look at our success", profiling those GMB members who have successfully been selected as Labour candidates and promoting the union's "political education" programme for new members

173. Ed Miliband'ss windfall tax on tobacco to fund the NHS is economically illiterate | The Spectator
The ‘windfall tax’, a concept introduced in the UK by the Blair government, is by definition a one-off seizure of revenue from a profitable industry, to fund an invariably unprofitable but popular project. It has been justified as putting ‘right a bad deal’ on the excesses of profits of unpopular industries. Between 1997 and 1998, Gordon Brown raised £5 billion from privatised utility companies to fund the Welfare-to-Work Programme.Today we have face another well-intentioned policy initiative, of ensuring every NHS patient is guaranteed a cancer test within 7 days, supposedly to be funded by a windfall tax on tobacco companies. Labour’s incoherent economic policy is enough to challenge whether this plan is even sustainable for anything but a short period of time. But the wider concept of a windfall tax is more political gimmickry than sound sustainable policy.

174. Labour wants to introduce the one policy guaranteed to make the housing crisis worse | City A.M.
The UK's housing crisis is no secret, and political solutions are offered two a penny.Unfortunately, Ed Miliband's plan to limit rents is perhaps the one thing that can be relied upon to make the situation worse for Britain's renters. At the launch of Labour's election campaign in Redbridge, Miliband is expected to say that "the next Labour government will legislate to make three year tenancies the standard in the British private rented sector".These tenancies, Miliband is set to say, "will limit the amount that rents can rise by each year too - so landlords know what they can expect each year and tenants can’t be surprised by rents that go through the roof."Like any price ceiling, Labour's pledge will reduce available supply, if rents are capped below their market level. Economists call such policies rent controls, and they are a rare area of consensus among academics.
