386. If the NHS is the envy of the world the world is bonkers – Telegraph Blogs
I'm trying to think of professions where killing people wins you promotion, a higher salary and a bigger pension. Apart from the military, the only one I can think of is the National Health Service. Lest you think this is a sick joke, consider the case of Cynthia Bower. This lovely, talented lady first proved her mettle as chief executive of the strategic health authority NHS West Midlands, whose responsibilities included Mid-Staffordshire hospital. When evidence emerged that vast numbers of patients – possibly as many as 1,200 – were dying there from neglect and shoddy care,

388. Sore Balls in a squeeze | Left Watch | ConservativeHome
The Independent headlines its interview with Ed Balls today: "Lib Dems should leave the Coalition and join us". This is the best news angle that can be found from it, though the Shadow Chancellor is scarcely likely to have said: "So you're asking what I'd do if the Lib Dems quit government, betrayed Cameron, voted with us and offered to help make me Shadow Chancellor? It's obvious, isn't it: I'd tell them to get lost!" However, he is careful to make the obligatory reference to Nick Clegg having to go in any such circumstances. I think Balls's response is a means of spinning himself as more coalition-friendly - and less tribal - than his critics assert without conceding nothing of substance: if he'd said he was open to coalition after the next election that would indeed have been news.

390. First tobacco, then booze, then sugar: the control freaks who would happily ban everything...
In this week's Spectator I have a rant about all those pressure groups you see quoted in all the papers pretty much every day. Some are small, obscure and marginal – Bright Blue, the think tank for Lib Dems who want to play at being Tories, comes to mind – while some sound superficially respectable – the British Medical Association, say. What they all have in common is that they tend, on the whole, to lend far, far too much credibility to a hardcore of professional activists whose tedious and unhelpful opinions we would most of us do better to ignore completely.

391. Which? hails Boris’s rail investment | Back Boris 2012 Blog
A rail passenger survey by Which? Magazine shows that London Overground has been voted the most improved commuter company, a ringing endorsement of Boris Johnson’s management of and investment in the line. Southeastern railway, which the Mayor proposes to takeover with his plans for suburban rail, came bottom of the table – showing how needed his improvements are.The results come on the day Boris visited Clapham Junction, which would benefit from his plans for extending London's first orbital rail network. This independent survey is also a boost for point 8 of Boris’s 9 point plan for Greater London: reducing tube delays by 30% by 2015, building Crossrail and an orbital rail to link our suburbs, and extending the bike hire scheme.

392. Osborne's tax breaks for frackers: at once too much and too little – and far, far too late...
Two cheers for George Osborne's latest announcement on tax breaks for frackers. Actually, maybe one cheer, because I can see at least a couple of things seriously wrong with it.The first is that it is a function not of high principle and sound practice but of the internecine warfare which has been ravaging this useless Coalition throughout its existence. Fracking would be great for Britain and it's what our economy very much needs sooner rather than later. All the relatively sane members of the Coalition have long known this from Owen Paterson and Michael Fallon to Osborne himself. But at every turn they have been hamstrung by the Lib Dem green ideologues at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, led by the dreaded Ed Davey, who have put every conceivable obstacle in the nascent industry's way. Osborne's tax break, in other words, is merely an expensive means of trying to counter DECC's obstructionism.

393. Cameron's reshuffle: too little, too late – Telegraph Blogs
David Cameron, as we know, is an arch practitioner of government by essay crisis. Every time you think it's all going to come crashing on top of him, he stays up all night on his Red Bull and Pro Plus, and dashes off something just good enough to persuade the world that the moment to send him down has not arrived quite just yet.

394. 'Kim so horny': pornography might be the one North Korean industry that's flourishing –...
Porn, porn, porn, porn, porn. Thanks to David Cameron’s crusade against filth, all anyone can think about in Britain at the moment is porn (and the Royal Baby – that’s a big thing here, too). And with so much hardcore smut on my mind, I of course got to thinking – do the North Koreans indulge in this most vile of vices? Turns out, they do.At first, you might think North Korea is a very puritanical society. Back in the 2000s, a South Korean women’s underwear factory operating in the Hermit Kingdom was nearly shut down after communist officials found that workers were wrapping the produce in paper that featured nearly-nude women. Golly gosh, shock horror! The only way to keep the factory open was to let only female labourers do the wrapping in closed rooms. It gives the impression that North Koreans are all too busy launching satellites and building socialism to waste time on Debbie Does Dallas. But think again. According to blogger Moon Sung Hwee, one of the few liberalisations that Kim Jong-il (AKA The Dear Leader) brought to North Korea, after he replaced his father as Kim Number One, was a voracious appetite for smut.

395. Rotherham, Hislop, Common Purpose – Telegraph Blogs
Perhaps the least surprising aspect of the Rotherham childcare story is that Car Crash Commissar and Child Catcher in Chief Joyce Thacker was a member of Common Purpose. The secretive Fabian organisation has been getting quite a bit of media attention, lately, thanks to a bravura investigation conducted by the Daily Mail. Common Purpose has been described as a Left-wing version of the Freemasons (apologies to the Freemasons who certainly don't deserve to be bracketed in the same noisome category) and to get an idea how it operates, here's an excerpt from the Mail piece

396. The euro is nothing more than a sacred cow. It is time to take it to the abattoir –...
At the turn of the year we naturally look forward to what the next twelve months might hold for us, both as individuals and as a country. But it is not a bad idea to look back to what was happening, or rather not happening, twelve months ago. What strikes me is that very few of the Guardianista or BBC establishment were then even prepared to discuss the possibility that the euro might be heading for partial, let alone complete, collapse.Yet here we are. Today Programme interviewers can no longer laugh to scorn those who have long predicted a crisis of the kind now facing the eurozone. Senior bankers and Treasury Ministers now admit to contingency planning for the odds-on case of Greece leaving the euro – and for the possibility that Italy and Spain might follow.

397. The greatest lesson of the last 50 years: change isn't always progress – Telegraph Blogs
It is all too easy for a blogger to respond a bit too much to the headlines of the day, so every now and again I think it useful to stand back and look at some long-term trends.David Cameron used to speak about Britain's broken society, and even Ed Miliband makes socialist noises about society from time to time. The Lib Dems concede, too, that there are some deep-rooted problems facing any government which could not be solved by handing everything over to Brussels.I know well enough that as a man of eighty years, if I say that many things were better in our society when I was young, those who never knew those years will condemn me as an addled old fool living in the past.
