369. God, I'm brilliant! – Telegraph Blogs
Like my esteemed colleague Dan Hannan, I have a pathological aversion to posting up videos of myself on my blogs. In this case, however, I feel I must make an exception. It's not often you get to appear on Uncommon Knowledge being interviewed by the mighty Peter Robinson. (Our subjects: Climategate; Watermelons; the imminent collapse of Europe)Peter Robinson is the uber-poised, uber-intelligent, uber-civilised (well he did go to Ch Ch) commentator, broadcaster and former Reagan aide who as a young man scripted the "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" Brandenburg Gate speech in Berlin in 1987. He's the co-founder of the US conservative website Ricochet which contains some of the most brilliant writing in the entire blogosphere and fabbo podcasts too including one mysteriously called Radio Free Delingpole

372. Ignore the scaremongering: America would be better off if Britain left the EU – Telegraph...
Would a British exit from the EU harm Britain’s partnership with the United States, and weaken the Special Relationship? The idea that it would is an argument that is being increasingly deployed by Eurofederalists on both sides of the Atlantic, and the Obama administration has also sent strong signals that it is against a British withdrawal.I expect that the US angle will be hammered on heavily by the pro-EU lobby in advance of the planned 2017 UK referendum, even among those who care little about the Anglo-American alliance. In Nick Clegg’s words, “we would not be taken as seriously by the American friends. The special relationship is special because they rely on us to stand tall in our own European back yard. That would not happen if we turn our back on Europe.” Downing Street has also played into this argument, highlighting US concerns, as has the Labour opposition. Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander has warned that Britain would be “relegated diplomatically and economically.”

373. Lies, damned lies, and The Wind is Free | Roger Helmer MEP
No it’s not. It’s very expensive indeed (or at least energy generated from wind is expensive — and intermittent). It’s an existential threat to our economy and our energy security (see piece below). So I couldn’t resist bringing home this little badge from one of the companies we met in Vaasa, Finland.

374. Sustainable energy just isn't …. well, sustainable | Roger Helmer MEP
I’ve just returned from a flying visit to Vaasa, Finland, with the European Energy Forum. The delegation was led by Slovenian MEP Romana Jordan. Vaasa boasts an “energy cluster” of cutting-edge companies in the energy field, and we spent a very solid day with Wärtsilä, a global Finnish company developing and making very large internal combustion engines. These have been widely used in shipbuilding, where the company has a substantial market share, and has production and assembly operations around the world, including key ship-building nations like China and Korea. But increasingly, engines of this type are also used for power generation, especially as back-up for wind. I’d always assumed that conventional gas-fired generation was the natural back-up for wind, but it seems that these machines are also ideal for the purpose. They can run on heavy or light fuel oil, or natural gas (think shale gas), and on bio-fuels and some oil wastes. They ramp up rapidly as the wind drops, and can switch instantly — literally instantly, we saw it done — from gas to diesel.Wärtsilä has made a rational commercial decision to market these machines as back-up for wind, given the commitment of European governments to renewables. But the message I took away was that wind, as a significant contributor to power generation, absolutely requires back-up.

375. Forever in Boris's shadow..... - Telegraph Blogs
It seems there’s one man who has managed to derive absolutely no joy from today’s triumphant victory parade, and that man is our Prime Minister, David Cameron. After a summer of watching Boris take centre stage, Red Dave must have been furious to discover that his speech to the cheering crowds would take place underneath…

376. The strange death of BNP England | Telegraph Blogs
The BNP looks like it is coming to the end of its existence, the political party’s decline and fall having a suitable touch of comedy. Having collapsed in the polls since their 2009 heyday, party leader Nick Griffin is now displaying the most obvious symptom of a movement in disarray – turning his energy on rivals. As Matthew Goodwin of Nottingham University explains, Griffin has produced a report on the English Defence League, "claiming that behind the EDL lie a number of shadowy neoconservatives and 'Zionist terrorists' who are seeking to manipulate public concern over Islam to launch new wars and split the far right nationalist scene".

377. The Met Office - defending the indefensible, as per usual – Telegraph Blogs
The Met Office is very cross with me. Well you can hardly blame it given that I've just published a big piece explaining what a spectacular waste of taxpayers' money it is.So now it has used some of the £200 million we pay it every year to get one of its in-house turd-polishers to publish a defiant blogpost defending its inglorious forecasting record, such as its non-existent "barbecue summer" and the terrible, snow-bound winter of 2010 which, as late as October that year, it was confidently predicting would be "unusually dry and mild."

378. No politician – not even St Barack Obama – can create jobs by spending more money...
The Independent reports that the Chancellor 'is drawing up plans for a major growth package to boost the British economy'. Good: that's what Chancellors are supposed to do, isn't it?So what are the elements of this package? Is George Osborne sweeping away the legislation that puts so many firms off hiring people? Is he slashing National Insurance? Is he scrapping Labour's equality laws? Is he withdrawing from the EU's 48-hour week rules, or refusing to implement the Temporary Workers Directive? Not according to the Indy. The package will mainly involve spending money and 'creating' jobs – especially in the field of alternative energy. 'The move follows President Obama's $450bn (£280bn) plan to create new jobs'.

379. Crony capitalism is failing; let's try the real thing – Telegraph Blogs
The past four years have seen governments throughout the West turn to a ghoulish corporatism, in which selected private companies are bailed out with public money. Understandably, people from across the political spectrum have reacted angrily. The Tea Partiers and the Occupiers are both protesting against the same thing, viz the rescue of large banks by taxpayers. But whereas the Occupiers, in a slightly inchoate way, believe they are complaining about capitalism, free marketeers point out that, in a capitalist system, bad banks would have been allowed to collapse, their assets sold to more efficient competitors. Bondholders, shareholders and some depositors would have lost money, but taxpayers wouldn't have contributed a penny. When we make that argument in full – as I did in a direct exchange with some Occupy LSX types recently (see here) – the typical response is 'Yeah, well that might be your theoretical capitalism, but we're dealing with the one that actually exists'.

380. Doctor **** - Telegraph Blogs
Phew! What a blessed relief! The rumours that the next Doctor Who was going to be Peter Capaldi – previously best known, of course, for his role as fictional Songs of Praise producer Tristan Campbell in the Vicar of Dibley – turn out to be true."Thank **** for that," as that amusing foul-mouthed spin doctor character in The Thick Of It, whatever his name is, would no doubt say.I'm delighted for at least two reasons. First, because it means an epic fail for Caroline Criado-Perez's most recent Change.Org petition: "Making the 12th Doctor Who another white man is racist and sexist. We want Diane Abbott to get the role – and if she doesn't Caitlin and I are going to scweam and scweam and…

381. How Blair conned the Tory Party into selling its soul | Mail Online
The question of why the Conservative Party so infrequently exhibits true conservative values is driving many Tory backbenchers to distraction. But I believe the answer to this conundrum can be found in one of the most remarkable political speeches of my lifetime — delivered by Tony Blair 13 years ago. On a glittering early autumn day at Bournemouth in September 1999, he had come to bury the Tory Party. His speech about the ‘Forces of Conservatism’ was a full-blooded declaration of war not on a party, but on an entire political philosophy — one that supported, as he put it, ‘fox-hunting, Pinochet and hereditary peers’. It was a vicious and cynical caricature.

382. The case for Swedish-style tax transparency – Telegraph Blogs
I'm half-attracted by Polly Toynbee's suggestion that all data held by the government, including tax returns, should be open to the public. Polly thinks that Nordic-style transparency would lead to Nordic-style income equality, but I'm not sure she's right. In any country, of course, some people will vote out of resentment. That is their tragedy: envy is an ugly and debilitating condition, but it is not nearly as widespread as its sufferers believe. The recent anger over top rates of pay had far more to do with the sense that some financiers were being rewarded for failure than with a general dislike of wealth. Nobody much minded gazillion-pound bonuses while their own ISAs were rising in value. It was only when their taxes were used to prop up incompetent banks that people objected. And who can blame them?

383. Birmingham, once the powerhouse of the nation, has been destroyed by decades of entrenched socialism
What's wrong with Brum?EVERYTHING, according to a damning new report by Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw who has described it as a "national disgrace" which compares unfavourably with Cuba and parts of Eastern Europe.I don't dispute his analysis for one moment. But I certainly don't share the Schadenfreude many will be experiencing on having their worst suspicions confirmed about arguably Britain's most despised city, home – so opinion surveys keep telling us – of Britain's least favourite accent. As someone who used to speak with that accent myself – Alvechurch C of E Primary – and whose grandfather and great-grandfather made their fortunes there, I see no cause for gleeful cackling: only despair at the tragedy wrought against our once-proud country by decades of entrenched socialism.

384. The world is obsessed with the US presidential poll, but the congressional elections matter more...
British Toryism can be surprisingly unpolitical. It's an instinct rather than an ideology. Or, rather, an amalgam of instincts: patriotism, distrust of officialdom, respect for property and so on.American conservatism is a far more doctrinal affair. Its exponents become as passionate when debating the virtues of Rothbardian versus Randian libertarianism as when weighing the merits of, say, Gingrich versus Santorum. In Britain, we see factionalism of this sort as the province of student Lefties, and a bar to electoral success. The American experience suggests that we might be wrong – that idealism stimulates enthusiasm.
