225. Germans are finally losing patience with the euro racket – Telegraph Blogs
Forty-nine per cent of Germans, according to Die Welt, think they would be better off without the EU, as against only 32 per cent who think they would suffer. Who'd have thought it, eh? Germans being fleeced by the EU? Es braucht keinen Geist, Gnädiger Herr, der aus seinem Grabe aufstehe, uns das zu sagen: there needs no ghost, my Lord, come from the grave, to tell us this. One of the many things Germans have in common with us is that they are disproportionately penalised by the EU's budgetary structures. For half a century, their politicians have pre-empted any criticism of this unfairness by an elliptical appeal to historical responsibility. The appeal, as you can hear me saying in the above clip, must always be kept elliptical, lest its utter absurdity become evident. An Oxford contemporary reminded me, at our White Wednesday reunion, of a conversation we had had…

226. I don't heart RenewableUK - Telegraph Blogs
Nothing definite yet, just a hunch, but any day now I reckon, I shall be on the receiving end of a lengthy litany submitted to the Press Complaints Commission by one of the most loathsomely vile and leprous organisations it has ever been my misfortune to share a country with. I refer, of course, to the wind industry's propaganda arm: RenewableUK.Why am I expecting a PCC complaint? Only because it's the kind of thing RenewableUK does, all too often, to anyone who has the temerity to tell the truth about the wind industry, which is that it's so noisome, greedy, destructive, repellant and wrong in pretty much every conceivable way that it makes the land-mine industry look about as soft and cuddly as a firm specialising in organic, ethically-sourced teddy bears for children in Great Ormond Street hospital.

227. I try to give the police the benefit of the doubt, but it's becoming harder and harder –...
One of the things that used to set the UK apart from the run of nations was the standing of its police force. The British constable was not an agent of the state, but a citizen in uniform, with no more powers than the rest of us, except in so far as those powers were contingently granted to him by a magistrate. At the recent Olympic Games, I saw plenty of overseas visitors marvelling at the easy relationship between unarmed police officers and trusting civilians.I am trying to hold on to the attitude with which I grew up: the belief that most coppers are motivated by patriotism and service, and that only scoundrels need fear them. But it is becoming harder and harder. There have been altogether too many lies: the crowd preventing emergency aid from reaching Ian Tomlinson; Jean Charles Menezes jumping the ticket barrier; the fans at Hillsborough mistreating the dead. These cover-ups made our front pages because of their awful consequences, which leaves me wondering how many lesser abuses go unreported.

228. Lefties think they're on the side of the masses. They're wrong – Telegraph Blogs
At the Oxford Union the other day, I was comprehensively outperformed by this man: Dr Cornel West. If you’ve heard him live, you’ll know that he speaks in the manner of a charismatic preacher, and that the timbre of his voice captivates almost any audience. The motion was This House would occupy Wall Street. He won.For a while, I sat there in the manner of Harold Abrahams after he loses to Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire. But then, like Abrahams, I picked myself up and started trying to improve my performance. In private, Dr West is the gentlest and most courteous of men. In public, he is moved by righteous anger. The reason he won – the reason Occupy types generally win before student audiences – is that he successfully presented himself as a defender of ordinary people against oligarchs. This is how most Lefties think of themselves, and I don’t doubt their sincerity. The curious thing, though, is that their policies, in effect if not intention, end up privileging vested interests over the general population.

229. Cocking a snook: Boris Johnson heckled by protestor thumbing his nose but gives as good as he...
This is the hilarious moment Boris Johnson gave as good as he got when a heckler cocked a snook at him. When faced with the gesture, more commonly found in school playgrounds, London Mayor quickly raised a thumb to his own nose and told protestors to ‘bog off’.He also faced cries of ‘Tory scum’ and ‘pleb’ as he went on a walkabout on dockyard but responded with a cry of 'lefty tossers!'.Trailled by hecklers calling him 'Tory scum' Mr Johnson eventually turned and bellowed his own insult back at them.Mr Johnson was in the city to offer his support to the Tory party’s candidate for police commissioner in next month’s elections.

230. Knives out for Boris: Now senior Tories are plotting to crush the Mayor if he ever launches a...
Last summer fate provided jolly Boris Johnson, the ultra-ambitious, attention-seeking Tory Mayor of London, with an opportunity to demonstrate his credentials as a potential national leader. He was found curiously lacking.London was burning, with riots breaking out in 29 of the capital city’s 32 boroughs, and the overwhelmed police were being accused of not even trying to contain the unfettered violence, looting and arson that gripped the streets. And where was Boris? In a camper van up a remote mountain in the Canadian Rockies, on holiday with his family. Now nobody can blame a politician for taking time off in the summer. But Boris showed a marked reluctance to return to handle the crisis in his own backyard. Excuses were put out from City Hall to explain his absence. He was not going to ‘reward’ the rioters by dancing to their tune and rushing back, it was said. With modern communications, he could just as easily direct operations from Canada as from his office on the banks of the Thames.Few people were convinced. From David Cameron’s Downing Street — always in two minds about whether Boris is an asset or a troublemaker and a threat — came incredulity at his continued absence. His political opponents went for the jugular. Could he not at least have gone into a local TV studio in Canada and made an address to the embattled people of London from there, asked Brian Paddick, the Lib Dem challenger for his position.

231. Why the Eurozone crisis is a bigger problem for Balls than Osborne Left Watch
Ed Balls is garlanded by the Wintour and Watt double act in the Guardian today for helping to keep Britain out of the Euro: his name takes precedence in their roll of honour over Gordon Brown. (Rightly, the duo also cite John Major and William Hague; wrongly, they omit Sir James Goldsmith.) The list is a reminder of how Balls and Brown forged...

In the week of George Osborne's Autumn Statement, you might think the Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, would be able to score the open goals and publicity that Opposition politicians can usually manage. 234. Portrait of an unbuttoned Prime Minister: It looks as though Cameron is prepared to give the...
Many will have experienced that dreaded feeling that a crucial button or zip is undone - but it is unlikely most will have had to deal with such a sartorial error before giving a speech in a dinner suit.Wardrobe blunders aside, the Prime Minister managed to button himself up after launching into a defensive speech emphasising just how fundamentally important British banks are to the country's economic recovery.David Cameron last night issued his strongest defence of the finance industry since the economic crisis, claiming those who 'trash the banks would end up trashing Britain'.The Prime Minister used his annual speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet – traditionally used to discuss foreign policy – to instead deliver a warning that Britain is in a battle to survive as a major economy in the wake of the financial crisis. He defended both the banks and defence companies, insisting the Government would stand up for sectors vital to the country's economic future. He told an audience at London's Mansion House that Britain was facing a 'moment of reckoning' and would either 'sink or swim' as newer economies expand. In what will be interpreted as a message to Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable, who has led criticism of the banking sector, he urged everyone to 'get behind' a properly regulated financial sector.

235. Euro-enthusiasts can't quite hide their contempt for the masses – Telegraph Blogs
How do you get a poll to register a large majority in favour of EU membership? Easy. Confine your survey to quangocrats, charity heads, civil servants, CEOs of multi-national corporations and the like. The pro-EU lobby group, British Influence, has been trying to get people excited about its poll of “leading figures” – that is, 700 bien pensant metropolitans of whom, sure enough, 69 per cent want to stay in the EU. Indeed, the only surprise is that, of a demographic specifically selected for pro-Brussels bias, 31 per cent don't agree.

236. Passive smoking - another of the Nanny State's big lies - Telegraph Blogs
Passive smoking doesn't give you lung cancer. So says a new report publicised by the American Cancer Institute which will come as no surprise whatsoever to anyone with a shred of integrity who has looked into the origins of the great "environmental tobacco smoke" meme.It was, after all, a decade ago that the British Medical Journal, published the results of a massive, long-term survey into the effects of second-hand tobacco smoke. Between 1959 and 1989 two American researchers named James Enstrom and Geoffrey Kabat surveyed no few than 118,094 Californians. Fierce anti-smoking campaigners themselves, they began the research because they wanted to prove once and for all what a pernicious, socially damaging habit smoking was. Their research was initiated by the American Cancer Society and supported by the anti-smoking Tobacco Related Disease Research Program. At least it was at first. But then something rather embarrassing happened.

237. How Australia surrendered to the wowsers – Telegraph Blogs
Today is ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand. It seems an appropriate time to reflect on what Australia was and what it has become.I said the other day what a marvellous achievement it was, the way those early generations of Aussies turned a relentless hell into a fair approximation of paradise on earth. What I see now, however, is a fair proportion of the current generation doing their damnedest to reverse the process.

238. Australia's green orchidectomy* – Telegraph Blogs
A week into my Australian tour and I already I love the country and its people so much I could happily stay here forever. (Articles like this and this and this may partly explain why.) There's just one small problem – well, one bloody big problem actually: the rampaging political correctness. How, in God's name, did the robust, no-nonsense pioneer spirit of the original settlers who carved an earthly paradise out of burning hell allow itself to be watered down, warped and wimpified by a minority of tofu-knitting greens and tight-sphinctered lefties?Let me give you one example. (Plenty more will follow, let me assure you, for Oz is the land of Political Correctness and Eco Fascism gone mad. Traditional Owners, anyone???) I've just returned from the remote Western Australian fishing port of Exmouth, point of embarkation for one of the most daring missions of the Second World War: Operation Jaywick.

239. After l'affaire Jimmy Carr, Left and Right should agree on flatter, fairer, simpler taxes...
In a speech to Politeia in 2004, Oliver Letwin, then Shadow Chancellor, made a simple but brilliant observation. The complexity of a nation’s tax system, he said, was every bit as damaging to competitiveness as the overall level of tax. It’s true. The more convoluted the tax code becomes, the more time we have to take off work to comply with it. Tolley’s Tax Handbook is now 11,500 pages long, twice what it was when Gordon Brown became Chancellor, and the number of tax lawyers has increased commensurately. There isn’t a small business in the land that doesn’t need to employ an accountant.
