161. Reddit has banned climate change deniers, and ripped its own reputation to shreds –...
Reddit, the massively popular links-sharing website where users post stories, pictures or info that they find interesting, prides itself on being open and liberal. It describes itself as “passionately dedicated to free speech”. In which case, why has it banned from its forums anyone who raises awkward or annoying questions about the science of climate change? In a move that has been described by one British academic as “positive censorship”, a Reddit moderator has announced that Reddit is becoming “increasingly stringent with deniers”. The Reddit moderator says climate “contrarians” were too often expressing “uninformed and outspoken opinions”, and so the site decided to adopt a much more “proactive moderation”. Now, whenever a user makes a “potentially controversial submission” on climate change, the moderators issue that user with a “warning”. If the user persists in posting “potentially controversial submissions”, he’s “banned from the forum”.

162. Cameron should scrap the Foreign Aid budget, not increase it – Telegraph Blogs
Yesterday I was on BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show sparring with Cristina Odone about Dave's mooted compulsory foreign aid levy on the British taxpayer. She was arguing – with some high level support from Lord Gummer – that it was a good thing, part of our moral obligation to the world, and really not that much money all things considered. I was arguing that, no, actually, £8 billion now (rising to £11.4 billion in 2015) is quite a lot of money and that in these dark economic times the very last thing our government ought to be doing is hosing down ungrateful foreigners with cash we haven't got.The biggest recipient of our foreign aid largesse is currently Pakistan to which over the next four years we will be sending a total of £1.4 billion. This is roughly the same amount that Pakistan has earmarked to spend on a new fleet of Chinese made submarines; these will go nicely with the two squadrons of Chinese J-10 fighters which Pakistan has also bought at a cost of $1.4 billion. So, in effect, our foreign aid donations are helping to underwrite the military expansion of the country which until recently was shielding the world's number one Islamist terrorist, organised the massacre in Bombay and is doing so much to fund the Taliban insurgency killing and maiming our forces in Afghanistan..........But though all these examples quite neatly expose the profligacy, political correctness and imbecilic incompetence of DFID what they also do is distract from the bigger picture. The real story – as I should have said on Jeremy Vine's show if only I'd had my wits about me and hadn't been so keen to major on the Ferris Wheel anecdote – is not that our Foreign Aid budget is grotesquely misspent (though of course it is) but that we shouldn't have a Foreign Aid budget at all.For chapter and verse on this I refer you to m'learned friend Dambisa Moyo, the Zambian-born, Harvard-educated author of Dead Aid. In her superb book, she explains how, far from helping the Third World, well-meaning aid packages from the West – such as the $1 trillion dollars spent in the last 50 years on aid for Africa – have only harmed it.

163. Sun Causes Climate Change Shock – Telegraph Blogs
If Michael Crichton had lived to write a follow-up to State of Fear, the plotline might well have gone like this: at a top secret, state of the art laboratory in Switzerland, scientists finally discover the true cause of “global warming”. It’s the sun, stupid. More specifically – as the Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark has long postulated – it’s the result of cosmic rays which act as a seed for cloud formation.

167. How the pro-choice Today programme distorted Lansley's inquiry into the abuse of the Abortion Act | Telegraph Blogs
The Today programme obviously reckons it is the highest authority in the land – the Supreme Court, Government and General Synod all in one. Today sets the agenda and the priorities – and woe betide any hapless minister who dares challenge their liberal orthodoxy. That orthodoxy rates abortion on demand up there with FairTrade Coffee and Boardroom Quotas. So when Andrew Lansley had the temerity to order the CQC investigation into what this paper had exposed as the grotesque and potentially illegal abuse of the 1967 abortion law, he had a fight on his hands. Today attacked him for politicising the issue – why the urgency? Why waste a whole million pounds and 'cancel' inspections into care homes?

170. The EU in a nutshell | Telegraph Blogs
The EU in a Nutshell is a miscellany of facts and anecdotes about the system which rules us. It’s a book you can delve into in pursuit of a particular fact, or crack open for entertainment at virtually any page. There are sections on how the Brussels institutions work in real life, on how the Euro-quangos have multiplied, on what each country thinks it is getting out of membership (complete with historical detours). And, of course, there are devastating numbers.Take, for example, the argument about the European Economic Area. We’re all familiar with the traditional integrationist rebuttal: if Britain went for an Iceland-style market-only deal, we’re told, we’d have to apply lots of directives over whose drafting we had had no say.

172. By all means shoot rioters but… – Telegraph Blogs
Yesterday I had a bizarre, typically BBC-ish debate on the BBC with someone called Professor Gus John about the policing and the riots. Professor Gus came up with the usual guff about the riots being caused by social deprivation, while I countered that this was really about bored, feckless youth protesting about the injustice of not having new enough trainers and big enough flat screen TVs – something which they managed to remedy very effectively.

173. How the BBC ganged up with the militant Left to attack Jeremy Clarkson – Telegraph Blogs
Yesterday, the BBC went totally bananas over the Jeremy Clarkson non-story. In twenty-five years of journalism I have never been so inundated with interview requests. First in was the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine Show; then BBC Radio Ulster; then the Richard Bacon Show on Radio 5 Live; then Scotland Tonight and BBC Wales; then the World Tonight on BBC Radio 4; then Channel 4 news (which, though not strictly the BBC is very much part of the same problem I'm about to describe). Oh, and today I'm doing Radio 5 Live again, followed by BBC World News. What the hell is going on?I got my answer from a chance remark made by Jeremy Vine after our interview. He was telling me about the phone-in he'd done the day before during the public sector workers' strike and what had astonished him was the mood of the callers. If I remember what he said correctly, one of his studio guests was a nurse on a £40,000 PA salary, with a guaranteed £30,000 pension, and this had not gone down well with the mother-of-three from Northern Ireland struggling as a finance officer in the private sector on a salary of £14,000 and no pension to speak of. The callers were very much on the side of the private sector. In fact, they were on the whole absolutely apoplectic that privileged, relatively overpaid public sector workers with their gold-plated pensions should have the gall to go out on strike when the people who pay their salaries – private sector workers – have to go on slogging their guts out regardless. This, of course, was much the same point Clarkson made on the One Show, albeit more colourfully.

174. Climategate 2.0: junk science 101 with Michael Mann – Telegraph Blogs
At last, I've arrived.Michael Mann, inventor of the Hockey Stick, has written to the Wall Street Journal branding me a "denier" and a "contrarian" and "silly." These are badges of honour I shall wear with pride. The letter is interesting for lots of reasons, not least its grotesque hypocrisy. "In recent years", he writes, "attacks on climate science have become personal" – as if somehow the real victims of all this are not the innocent taxpayers being screwed to pay for the great green boondoggle, but ordinary decent climate scientists like Mann and his Hockey Team just trying to get on and do their job.

175. Gove labels Academies' critics "enemies of promise" who are "happy with failure" The Tory Diary
In a speech today at the Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College in New Cross, south-east London, Education Secretary Michael Gove accused critics of the Academies programme as being "enemies of promise".Gove said that whilst most councils had been supportive of the Government's Academies programme, those local education authorities who have attacked it are "happy with failure": "The same ideologues who are happy with failure - the enemies of promise - also say you can't get the same results in the inner cities as the leafy suburbs so it's wrong to stigmatise these schools."Criticism of the programme, Gove said, had been of the Government "underpinning motives" and that "the talk was of an 'ideologically-driven Academies programme’ and ‘ideologically-motivated school reforms". It was "ironic" he said, that those who brandished the Government as ideologues, could now be labelled as such themselves.Their prejudices, Gove said, should be held "up to the light", and that the underlying message behind their sentiment suggesting there is little hope for inner city schools achieving as well as those in the suburbs, is something sinister. This was an example, Gove said of "the bigoted backward bankrupt ideology of a left wing establishment that perpetuates division and denies opportunity ... an ideology that’s been proven wrong time and time again".

176. In every area of our public life, the Left is losing the argument – Telegraph Blogs
The facts of life are Conservative – as Labour’s smartest minds now realiseIt is now widely accepted that the years of New Labour government were an almost unalloyed national disaster. Whichever measure you take – moral, social, economic, or the respect in which Britain is held in the world – we went into reverse.Nevertheless, historians may come to judge that these 13 years of Labour misrule served a vital purpose. In retrospect, the Brown/Blair period may be seen as a prolonged experiment which taught the liberal Left that its ideas cannot work, do not work, and have no chance of ever working. It takes time to ruin a country. Four years, the average period between elections, was never going to be enough. But 13 years of Left-wing government has produced a mountain of evidence that the Conservative analysis is better and more truthful.
