65. KWASI KWARTENG: The Tory's new rising star reveals his vision for Britain after Eurogeddon |...
t's difficult to see how we could avoid the economic storm. Our Government would have to reaffirm its commitment to the deficit programme and further cuts in spending would have to be implemented. For this reason, I think a cash freeze of benefits for three years would be simple, fair and save a significant amount. It seems only fair that people receiving benefits should also experience restraint, when people in employment have had to endure pressures due to the cost of living and stagnant wages.

66. Hollande's 'Growth Bloc' spells end of German hegemony in Europe - Telegraph
For two years Germany has had its way in Europe, treating historic nations much as Bismarck treated Bavaria – sovereign only in name. The French-led counter-attack and rumblings of revolt through every branch of the EU institutions last week have brought this aberrant phase of the eurozone crisis to an abrupt end."It’s not for Germany to decide for the rest of Europe," said François Hollande, soon to be French leader, unless he trips horribly next week. Strong words even for the hustings."If I am elected president, there will be a change in Europe's construction. We’re not just any country: we can change the situation," he said.

68. IMF bail outs | John Redwood's Diary
I support President Obama, who has said that the USA does not wish to put more into the IMF to bail out members of the Eurozone. The USA thinks the Eurozone should do more for itself. I do not think the UK should be putting more of our money at risk in the Euro through the IMF either.IMF programmes are for sovereign countries. They usually require austerity packages, which are plentiful in Euroland, and devaluations, which are ruled out within the Euro. They require states going through an IMF programme to follow appropriate monetary policies for them controlled by their Central Banks and governments. Again, Euroland members cannot do this, as they have to accept the one size does not fit all policy laid down by the ECB and the EU.

69. Greece teeters on edge of bankruptcy as debt talks stall | Mail Online
France was tonight stripped of its coveted AAA credit rating in a crushing humiliation for Nicolas Sarkozy.Leading ratings agency Standard & Poor’s cut the French credit score by one notch to AA+ in a major setback to the President’s hopes of re-election.The downgrade – on Friday the 13th – came just a month after a bitter war of words broke out between Paris and London over the relative health of the French and British economies.Fears are also rising that the credit ratings of several other eurozone countries could soon be downgraded - prompting global markets to fall and the euro falling to a 16-month low.Analysts today said that ratings agency Standards & Poor was finally going to deliver the downgrades it had threatened for much of the 17-nation eurozone just over a month ago.It comes because of concerns of Europe's inability to get a grip on a debt crisis that has raged for around two years. And it is on the same day that Greece was revealed to once again be teetering on the edge of a catastrophic bankruptcy - as negotiations on a bond swap to slash its public debt by 100 billion euros stalled.

70. Will the IMF ride to Spain’s rescue?
As we get ready for the meetings of the IMF and World Bank this coming week-end a familiar Euro crisis is brewing again. Yesterday Spanish ten year bond yields rose more, to 6.16%. This week Spain is planning to tap the 12 and 18 month money market on Tuesday, and to raise 2 and 10 year money on Thursday. It needs to carry on borrowing, to keep pace with its deficit, to pay all those public sector bills. Some are alarmed at how much it will have to pay to carry on borrowing.Spanish shares have been falling. Markets have raised more doubts about some Spanish banks. The government has taken powers to be able to move in and run any regional government in Spain which does not do a better job this year of running its own finances. In March Spanish banks were borrowing Euro 316 billion from the European Central Bank, a large sum.
