401. Messages from a tractor factory | John Redwood's Diary
The Prime Minister and his Deputy chose a tractor factory to pre launch the Queen’s speech agenda on Tuesday. They heralded the opening words of the Gracious Speech, that this new session of Parliament is going to be dedicated to sorting out the economy and promoting faster growth. It does not worry me that the Speech was light on new bills. The UK is scarcely short of laws. Much of what needs to be done now requires competent administration rather than lots of new legislation. The health, welfare and school reforms require patient and purposeful execution and follow up.Nor does the backdrop of their news conference cause me as much concern or amsuement as some journalists who wrote the obvious pieces about tractor production statistics, and the sea of blue and yellow tops sported by the workforce. The government after all has said much about leading an industrial revival, so it needs to paint its picture, and it needs to listen more to people who make things to see what else it can do to promote more home grown manufacturing.

402. Angela Merkel's "rethink" on Europe catches Tories on the hop | The Times
Discussions on whether Brussels should “give something back” to member states could begin within weeks, Angela Merkel revealed last night, in remarks which will heap pressure on David Cameron to lay out his re-negotiation strategy. The German Chancellor suggested renegotiations over the way Europe operates should begin this autumn, saying “we will also have this discussion after the Bundestag elections” on September 22.This is far sooner than many Tory MPs had expected and the timing will unnerve those who believe no serious progress can be made on changing Britain’s relationship with the EU while in coalition.

412. Just cut the EU budget
The UK Parliament voted to cut the EU budget. Now I see countries who get more out than they put in saying the budget must be increased to promote growth.Every pound or Euro they spend has to be taken from taxpayers somewhere. Why are they better at spending it than the people who earned the money in the first place? EU spending does not and is not promoting growth. The EU is in recession.

414. €uro fanatics play double or quits | Roger Helmer MEP
Guy Verhofstadt is a former Prime Minister of Belgium, and now leader of the Liberals in the European parliament. He is also the most splendidly unreconstructed €uro-zealot you could hope to meet. With the European House crashing about his ears, his cry in the plenary on Wednesday was “More federalism! More political integration! €uro-bonds! Debt mutualisation! More Europe!”. And yet elsewhere in his speech he reminded us that we faced not a world crisis or a world recession, but a European crisis. He seemed oblivious to the obvious flaw in his logic.I wrote to him afterwards in the following terms...

416. Vladimir Putin's new plan for world domination - The Spectator
It’s been a generation or so since Russians were in the business of shaping the destiny of the world, and most of us have forgotten how good they used to be at it. For much of the last century Moscow fuelled — and often won — the West’s ideological and culture wars. In the 1930s, brilliant operatives like Willi Muenzenberg convinced ‘useful idiots’ to join anti-fascist organisations that were in reality fronts for the Soviet-backed Communist International. Even in the twilight years of the Soviet Union the KGB was highly successful at orchestrating nuclear disarmament movements and trade unionism across the West.
