371. Why have the markets crashed?
Markets have been in the limelight because they have simultaneously decided there will be too little growth ahead to sustain the massive debts the west has built up. The spend now pay later model followed by the US, and much of Euroland, only works if enough of the money is spent wisely on productive investments which can pay the interest and repay the capital in due course. If public and private sectors borrow to spend too much on current consumption, eventually lenders ask “How can you afford to pay us back?”

372. Wages are too low
Let me make common cause today with the labour movement. Wages in the UK are too low. Instead of spending so much time complaining about the pay of a minority who are well paid in the private sector, maybe we should spend more time asking how more people can enjoy higher pay. I am not one of those hypocritical commentators on a good salary always urging pay restraint on others. Before the labour movement gets too excited, however, I do believe a couple of other things about pay. I do not think you can legislate successfully for higher pay. It has to be earned. The problem with minimum wage legisaltion is if you set it too high you drive jobs away, and if you set it too low it has no benefiical impact. If you get it somewhere in the middle it does not deliver great living standards, and may still encourage non compliance and a larger black economy. Labour’s minimum wage has left many people on low pay and in receipt of benefit top ups so they have a more reasonable income.

373. Supply-Side Solutions | Roger Helmer MEP
Last week I attended a lunch with EU Commissioner Almunia, responsible for Monetary Affairs. He reminded us how lucky we were to have the strength and stability of the euro during these difficult times, and asked us to contemplate how difficult things would be if Euroland states still had separate currencies. So I contemplated. I contemplated how the Irish Punt would have tracked Sterling and the Dollar, not the Deutschmark, so that the Irish economy, while facing difficulties, would not be looking in to the abyss. The PIGS — Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain — would have exchange rates and monetary policy appropriate to their national circumstances. Italy would not be disadvantaged 30% in terms of unit labour costs versus Germany. Greece’s tourist industry would not have collapsed, and quite possibly the eruptions of street violence in that country would not have occurred.

377. Local elections 2012: By linking UKIP to the BNP, Baroness Warsi is insulting voters she should...
As I settled down to watch the BBC coverage of the election results, I groaned when I saw that Baroness Warsi had been deployed to put a gloss on the good kicking the voters had given the Tories. But, however low my expectations, nothing prepared me for the quite disgraceful, cynical and plain stupid attempt she made to try to link the UK Independence Party with the BNP.it's bad enough that the Chairman of the Conservative Party doesn't know the difference between 'less' and 'fewer', but her ignorance of basic grammar - unsurprising in the representative of a party opposed to grammar schools - is trifling compared to the sheer wrongheadedness of her attempt to smear the disillusioned natural conservative supporters who had deserted her party to put their cross by UKIP candidates.

379. Never mind the PIGS, worry about the DOGS
The problem in Euroland is not just a problem of a few countries which are no longer competitive. There is a problem of too much government debt. The same issue haunts the US, where there is a poltical war over how to get the deficit down. The UK now has a government which says its main purpose is to eliminate the deficit. The problem of the west rests in a series of countries that could properly be called DOGS – Democratic overspending government sovereigns.

380. QUENTIN LETTS: Red Ed the genius, hiding a grenade in his trunks | Mail Online
What a genius Ed Miliband is. He came flippering into the Commons, up to his snorkel in a party-funding row. So what did the great frogman do? He ensured that almost every question at Prime Minister’s Questions was about … party funding. Man cunningly hides hand grenade down front of swimming trunks – then pulls out pin by mistake.Kaboom! What on earth was Baldrick thinking? Were I a Labour moderate I would take two slices of Mother’s Pride, spread them with thick butter and make myself a club cyanide sandwich.Labour troops were under strict orders from their Whips: ask about Tory party donors at every chance you get. Don’t ask about schools or hospitals or the economy or transport or foreign policy or business or farming or anything that might affect the voters’ lives.

381. Failed, failed, failed: Blair said his priorities were education, education, education. But Labour's billions did nothing to raise standards, says report | Daily Mail
Billions of pounds poured into education under Labour resulted in ‘no improvements’ in standards, a major report revealed yesterday.Despite Tony Blair declaring his priorities as ‘education, education, education’ when he swept to power in 1997, a huge increase in spending on schools led to ‘no improvement in student learning outcomes’, the report found. In fact, the UK’s teenagers have slipped down world league tables in crucial subjects while the country’s schools have become among the most socially segregated across the world.
