17. Wind farms vs wildlife - The Spectator
Wind turbines only last for ‘half as long as previously thought’, according to a new study. But even in their short lifespans, those turbines can do a lot of damage. Wind farms are devastating populations of rare birds and bats across the world, driving some to the point of extinction. Most environmentalists just don’t want to know. Because they’re so desperate to believe in renewable energy, they’re in a state of denial. But the evidence suggests that, this century at least, renewables pose a far greater threat to wildlife than climate change.

19. Germany's clean energy plan backfired - Salon.com
The nation's move away from nuclear power drove it right back to coal. When a nuclear power plant closes, a coal plant opens. At least, that’s the way things are shaping up in Germany, where the move away from nuclear energy appears to have backfired. For the second consecutive year, according to Bloomberg, the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions are set to increase.German Chancellor Angela Merkel made headlines back in 2011 when, in the wake of the reactor meltdown in Tokyo, she announced the impending closure of Germany’s 17 nuclear reactors.

20. Why do some people and many politicians want to stay in the EU on current terms?
Two arguments are constantly recited by the defenders of our current EU entanglement. Today I wish to deal with the more serious, the proposition that the EU is necessary to prevent wars in Europe. This argument looks to some at first to be attractive and well based. After all, say its proponents, Europe was torn apart by two long and damaging wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Who wouldn’t want to avoid that again? They go on, emboldened by the general agreement that European wars are a bad thing, to point out there has been no recurrence of major European war since the EEC and the EU were formed. This is rather like arguing that we need to belong to the EU to keep horses and carts off our streets.

22. Reply on Immigration | John Redwood's Diary
I recently posted the government statement of what they are doing about immigration because I know how important this issue is to many who read this site. Some of you were grateful and surprised by how much action the government is taking. Others cynically complained that it was all words, pointing out that over the last year there has still been a high level of entry.I have listened carefully to Ministers and talked regularly to them about what they are doing. I am quite sure they wish to control numbers, and are taking actions which they believe will do that in a fair and sensible way. They are well aware that so far the numbers have not reduced, but point out that it takes time to get each of these measures into effect and to ensure they are working well at each entry point into the country. They accept that the proof of their measures comes over the next year, when they expect to see results. They are of course ready and willing to examine other ways to achieve what they wish to achieve, especially if the numbers do not decline as they expect.

25. American economic strengths we could copy | John Redwood's Diary
Yesterday I argued that the US was not growing faster than the UK because it was enjoying a larger fiscal stimulus. Most of you agreed, but some were extremely sceptical of the quality and sustainability of US growth. Today I wish to look at the factors that are assisting the US growth rate. I understand that there is still too much unemployment in the USA, and that some people’s living standards have been badly squeezed. However, the official figures drawn up under international public sector accounting conventions do show faster growth in the USA last year and this, than in troubled Europe. Some have rightly observed that the USA now has very cheap energy in the form of low priced gas, thanks to its enthusiastic embrace of shale gas. Mr Obama was dismissive of Sarah Palin’s “Drill baby, drill” remark when asked about energy policy, yet his administration seems to be adopting it as a practical means of cutting energy bills and providing a big stimulus to industry. The Uk needs to pursue cheaper energy policies, as I have often argued here.

26. Germany's Green-Power Program Crushes the Poor | National Review Online
On May 7, Tom Friedman published an op-ed in the New York Times filled with praise for Germany’s green-power program. “What the Germans have done in converting almost 30 percent of their electric grid to solar and wind energy from near zero in about 15 years has been a great contribution to the stability of our planet and its climate,” gushed Friedman. “ . . . This is a world-saving achievement.” Friedman is not alone in his admiration for the German energy program. President Obama has hailed it too, saying that the world should “look to Berlin” as the model for its energy future. However, what Friedman, Obama, and other admirers of the German green-energy strategy fail to say is that it has come at the expense of sky-high electricity rates.

27. The Nazis' Forgotten Anti-Smoking Campaign - The Atlantic
Nazi Germany’s well-known obsession with creating a master Aryan race led to many atrocities. But from these same sinister motives came research that may have had health benefits for the German people during World War II—studies on the dangers of smoking that led to the most advanced anti-tobacco campaign of its time. Unfortunately, the campaign was only concerned with protecting the health of Aryan Germans.“Nazi Germany was governed by a health-conscious political elite bent on European conquest and genocidal extermination,” Nazi Germany’s well-known obsession with creating a master Aryan race led to many atrocities. 28. Germany 'Like 1938' as 'Berlin Police Cower Before Jew-Haters'
A surge in anti-Semitism in Germany has led Yakov Hadas-Handelsman, Israeli ambassador in Berlin, to say it is like a return to the Nazi era: "They pursue the Jews in the streets of Berlin… as if we were in 1938."His comments came as Islamists were blamed for an "explosion" of anti-Semitism that has undermined Germany’s efforts to banish racism since the Holocaust.

30. Europe's blithering idiots and their flim-flam treaty – Telegraph Blogs
What remarkable petulance and stupidity. The leaders of France and Germany have more or less bulldozed Britain out of the European Union for the sake of a treaty that offers absolutely no solution to the crisis at hand, or indeed any future crisis. 31. France election: Germany rules out reworking EU's 'fiskalpakt' - Telegraph
Germany has ruled out reworking the European Union's "fiskalpakt" despite calls to do so by Francois Holande, France's president-elect."It is not possible to renegotiate the fiscal pact," government spokesman Steffen Seibert said during a news conference. He noted that 25 of the 27 EU member states had already signed the accord imposing strict budgetary discipline in March after major wrangling.Mr Hollande has called for a shift in strategy toward more growth-oriented measures including more public spending. But Mr Seibert said Angela Merkel would not accept "deficit spending" to feed economic expansion, and believed in "growth through structural reforms" such as reducing the cost of job creation as pursued by Germany over the last decade. He dismissed suggestions that the apparently conflicting policies would put Mrs Merkel on a collision course with Germany's closest ally, insisting she was ready for an open dialogue.

32. ‘Project Utter Crap!’ Furious Tory backlash after Osborne warns that Brexit could trigger an 8p rise in income tax | Daily Mail
George Osborne is facing a furious Tory backlash today after warning that Britain would be 'permanently poorer' after leaving the EU.The Chancellor accused London Mayor Boris Johnson and other Leave campaigners of 'dishonesty' as he published an apocalyptic Treasury assessment of Brexit risks. The 200-page dossier predicted that quitting would trigger a 6 per cent slump in GDP and cost every household £4,300 a year. It also said an 8p rise in the basic rate of income tax could be needed to fill a £36billion hole in the public finances by 2030.But the report drew condemnation from a host of senior Conservatives, with 'laughably spurious', 'childish' and 'disreputable' among the politest descriptions. One backbencher said that the Remain campaign's 'Project Fear' approach had 'turned into Project Utter Crap'.
