131. Council slammed for awarding £4m bin contract to a GERMAN firm... even though British bid was...
A Labour run council has been attacked for awarding a £4million wheelie bin contract to a German company - despite a British bid that was £250,000 cheaper.Durham County Council will buy 225,000 'twin bins' from the overseas supplier, allowing it to reduce collections to fortnightly next year. The move has infuriated families and workers in the region, which has been one of the worst hit areas in the country during the financial crisis.Cancellations of weekly collections elsewhere in the UK have led to chaotic scenes, with bins overflowing and unsightly rubbish strewn across roads.Campaigners said taxpayers' money was being squandered instead of vital cash being injected into local businesses. With the Labour-run council trying to save around £150m, the £250,000 could have been used to improve roads and youth services, or reduce the 1,600 job cuts being made by the authority. The decision was also called a 'kick in the teeth for British manufacturers' who have lost out on the quarter-of-a-million-pound deal.

132. Another environmentalist goes sceptic | Roger Helmer MEP
According to the Good Book, “there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth”. And recently, we’ve had several. There was George Monbiot, long-time anti-nuclear campaigner, recently converted to the nuclear cause (although for the bad reason that it cuts CO2 emissions). There was James Lovelock, of the Gaia Hypothesis, who has said “Twenty years ago we knew where the climate was going. Now we don’t”. And now we have Fritz Vahrenholt.

134. As Britain is hit by a series of immigration crises where is Theresa May? | Daily Mail Online
Where on earth is Theresa May? The Home Secretary, who is widely seen as a plausible candidate to succeed David Cameron as Tory leader, normally laps up the limelight.Yet as the country debates the vital EU referendum, she seems to have gone AWOL.This is a shameful abrogation of duty, particularly at a time when one of her main responsibilities — immigration — has become the most bitterly contested political issue of the day.

135. The UK desperately needs a free trade alternative to costly EU membership | City A.M.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT that the UK must stump up a further €2.1bn (£1.7bn) to finance the EU’s ballooning budget has understandably caused outrage. Not only does this demand appear to punish Britain’s relative economic success, while France and Germany are rewarded with handouts, but with Greece and Cyprus also asked to pay more, a political farce has been turned into an existential absurdity. The truth, of course, is significantly different from the political outrage being inflated by the Prime Minister’s fury, for the additional bill is a correction to Britain understating its Gross National Income (GNI) over more than a decade. But while the €2.1bn bill may be a one-off adjustment, it is no better for that. It underscores how the UK’s net contribution to the EU has been climbing steadily, and the trend is set to continue. The ONS Pink Book shows that, back in 2002, Britain’s net payment to the EU was only £2.9bn. This had climbed to £11.3bn in 2013, rising £2.7bn alone last year. And that’s before the latest surcharge.

138. State debt and the Bank of England
Today I want to concentrate on the narrower definition of the nation’s debts – the £1300 billion of official borrowing in the name of the nation that gets measured in the international comparisons, some 80% of GDP. This excludes the public sector pension deficits, the semi nationalised bank liabilities and the private finance guarantees.
