115. Germans are finally losing patience with the euro racket – Telegraph Blogs
Forty-nine per cent of Germans, according to Die Welt, think they would be better off without the EU, as against only 32 per cent who think they would suffer. Who'd have thought it, eh? Germans being fleeced by the EU? Es braucht keinen Geist, Gnädiger Herr, der aus seinem Grabe aufstehe, uns das zu sagen: there needs no ghost, my Lord, come from the grave, to tell us this. One of the many things Germans have in common with us is that they are disproportionately penalised by the EU's budgetary structures. For half a century, their politicians have pre-empted any criticism of this unfairness by an elliptical appeal to historical responsibility. The appeal, as you can hear me saying in the above clip, must always be kept elliptical, lest its utter absurdity become evident. An Oxford contemporary reminded me, at our White Wednesday reunion, of a conversation we had had…

122. Europes Supernova Moment - NYTimes.com
HAMBURG, Germany — More or less since its birth, the European Union has been a subject of apocalyptic talk — a permanent crisis mode that has worked beautifully to enhance ever-closer integration.Today, though, the situation is different, and it is serious. Never before have Europeans been more tired and disillusioned with the promises of the Brussels mandarins. In the run-up to the European parliamentary elections in May, the gap between what’s economically necessary and what’s politically justifiable is growing dangerously wide.

123. A new relationship with the EU?
Mr Cameron’s article yesterday in the Sunday Telegraph did represent an important advance in government thinking. He now agrees with those of us who say we need a new relationship with the EU. He agrees it is not just a case of saying “No” to future transfers of power, but getting powers back that have already been ceded.I also agree with him that holding an In/Out referendum soon would be bad news if the In campaign won. The Uk would then have little bargaining power to get a better relationship, and would have lost the chance to leave the EU if things got worse.

125. It's time we stood up to the vicious bullies of the 'caring' liberal Left – Telegraph...
Who are the most unpleasant people on the internet? Obviously with so much competition, it is, to paraphrase Dr Johnson, like arguing the toss between lice and fleas. Nonetheless, after the recent experiences of critic and author Philip Hensher – which I describe in more detail here – I’d suggest that disability rights activists are a strong contender.Hensher wrote a piece suggesting – not unreasonably given the state of our shrinking economy and the size of our debt – that maybe 2.4 cent of GDP is a bit much for Britain to spend on disability benefits (US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain all spend less) and that maybe not all these recipients of taxpayers' largesse were quite as deserving as others. For expressing this mildly argued and not-exactly-extreme viewpoint Hensher was vilified, threatened with death and all but hounded off the internet by a shrill mob of self-appointed disability rights activists. I doubt they speak for the majority in Britain; I doubt they even speak for the majority of the disabled, most of whom I'm sure are properly appalled that money which could go to the genuinely needy is instead being hijacked by scroungers and fakes.

126. Law Enforcement Officials, Medical Professionals: There’s Something Seriously Wrong With Hillary Clinton’s Health

127. Polls, polls, polls
It’s the voters turn to say what they think. In France it looks as if an other incumbent who has presided over the Euro crisis, another supporter of Euro austerity, is about to lose office. Latest polls shows Mr Sarkozy trailing Mr Hollande by between 6% and 11%. If Mr Hollande wins, expect rapid moves to bring him on board for the austerity treaty of late last year, sweetened by some kind 0f Growth package to be agreed with Germany and the Commission. Do not expect a radical change in the EU’s approach to the Euro.In Greece the two larger parties of past elections and the last Parliament saw much lower poll ratings in recent months. Pasok, the current ruling party, saw its rating slump from 38% in January 2011, to around 14% in the last permitted polls. New Democracy has had a smaller fall, from 30% to 23%. They do not allow polls close to the election.

128. Europe at loggerheads over banking union - Telegraph
European finance ministers clashed over plans for a banking union on Saturday, with Germany leading criticism of proposals to introduce a single banking supervisor by January.Ministers were meeting in Cyprus to discuss the European Commission's proposals for the European Central Bank (ECB) to be given the role of supervisor, with extensive powers to regulate banks. The appointment of a single bank supervisor is a crucial step toward a wider European banking union, which could see the European bailout fund offer direct help to troubled banks. However, ministers disagree over the detail of the proposals.German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble said it would "not be possible" for the ECB to assume its new duties by the new year as planned.
