385. Who are Ukip's new voters? The kind of people who decide elections » The Spectator
An opinion poll to be published next week will reveal that Labour leader Ed Miliband is slightly less popular with the public than the vibrant Islamic State commander ‘Jihadi John’ and the late BBC disc jockey Jimmy Savile, and only two points more popular than His Infernal Majesty, Satan. The same poll will also put Labour slightly ahead of the Tories and therefore on course to be the largest party in a hung parliament come next May, with Ed Miliband as prime minister.

386. Mobile networks block church and 'BBC bias' websites - Telegraph
Mobile phone network censorship systems have cut off community and political opinion websites, the Government has been warned, as it considers imposing similar technology on home broadband networks in an effort to protect children from pornography.Non-sexual websites such as one created by the residents of St Margarets, Middlesex, to act as an online hub for local news and events, and a blog that challenges the impartiality of the BBC, have been blacklisted by mobile networks, a report by the London School of Economics found.Currently, the major mobile networks impose restrictions to block access to content unsuitable for under-18s by default, on the grounds that young people may access the internet from their smartphone unsupervised. Adult customers who want to access such material must ask for the restrictions to be lifted and provide credit card details to prove their age.The blacklists sometimes go too far, the report says. They have also been imposed on eHow.com, one of the biggest general 'how to' websites, on a church in Sheffield, on a London bar, and on the business website of a graphic designer, the researchers said.

387. Cameron 'will face vote of no confidence' from Tory MPs if he loses Rochester by-election to UKIP, Cabinet minister warns | Daily Mail
David Cameron could face a vote of no confidence from furious Tory MPs if he fails to defeat UKIP in the Rochester by-election, it emerged today.Cabinet ministers believe the Prime Minister will face a challenge to his leadership if Tory defector Mark Reckless wins the seat for UKIP.Mr Cameron has urged Tory activists to join the fight to kick Mr Reckless' 'fat arse' off the Commons benches, but one opinion poll put UKIP nine points ahead in the by-election, expected in late November.

389. Why can't the Conservatives all be like Michael Gove? – Telegraph Blogs
Gove: truly we should worship and adore his mighty wondrousness (pic PA)."We're ready to walk out on Europe," Michael Gove has apparently been telling friends. And if there were to be any referendum on the subject he'd vote out.In any sane world this wouldn't be a story. Or only a story along the lines of "Fried eggs don't half go well with bacon," says Education Secretary. Or "dark sky at night, light sky in the morning" observes Gove. The reason it is a story is that we're so unused to hearing any member of our useless government say anything remotely in tune with what the electorate actually feels. Here is Gove saying what most of us have been thinking for years. And being thoroughly, deservedly applauded for it.

391. Small wonder Labour are enthusiastic tax-avoiders - the party is in dire financial straits
Today's Times contains an awkward revelation for Ed Miliband - despite turning a surplus last year, Labour managed to organise its tax affairs so efficiently that the party paid no corporation tax whatsoever.Of course, there's no suggestion they did anything illegal, but given Miliband's regular drum-beating about the immorality of tax avoidance it is more than ironic to see his party's accountants engaged in such nifty footwork. Had they paid tax on the headline surplus, their bill would have been over half a million pounds.

394. Roger Helmer MEP: When they tell you that half our international trade is with the EU, that’s...
I picked up an incoming Tweet this morning from my good friend and colleague Dan Hannan MEP. It reads: “Denis MacShane told me, didactically, that we sell more to Belgium than Brazil. That, Denis, is precisely our problem.”Dan makes an important point. The fact is that between 40 and 50% of Britain’s international trade is with the EU’s 26 (EU less UK). The exact figure is debatable, because of the Rotterdam effect and other technical problems with analysing the trade statistics. There is the standard, familiar Europhile interpretation of this simple fact. “50% of our trade” (they say) “is with the EU. This, by itself, justifies our membership, and means that the costs are worth it”. You will have spotted the errors in this statement. There is the implicit assumption that trade depends on membership (Not true: ask Norway or Switzerland). There is the nice round 50%, which is almost certainly exaggerated. And there is the failure to address the European Commission’s own estimates that the trade benefits of membership amount to around 1.8% of GDP, while regulatory costs amount to about 5.5% - three times higher.

395. If the real Margaret Thatcher had been like Meryl Streep's Iron Lady, I wouldn't have supported...
Last week I saw the film The Iron Lady. I regret to say it confirmed all my worst fears from having seen the trailer some time ago. This is primarily a film about an old lady suffering from dementia. The actress, Ms Streep, is well made up to resemble Margaret Thatcher in both old age and her younger years and has acquired a number of her gestures and movements as well as some entirely new to me.There are other people depicted in the film whom I did not recognise and some who were vitally important to her during her time as Prime Minister who did not appear at all.If you have seen, or intend to see this film, remember that it uses the name and reputation of Margaret Thatcher to sell tickets, but it is not about the Margaret Thatcher whom I knew and served in government. Above all, do not believe that the portrayal of Denis Thatcher is anything like that devoted, humorous, thoughtful and wise man. That is drawn for the same purpose.

397. What do the election results tell us?
Labour won 2158 seats, Conservatives 1005 and Lib Dems 431. Congratulations to Labour on their success. Thank you to all those outgoing Councillors who have worked hard and who now have been asked to stand down.SNP and Plaid came fourth and fifth, with the Greens picking up 40 seats in sixth place, or fourth place amongst UK wide parties. The English Democrats lost their 2 Councillors and UKIP made no net gains, staying with 9.This leaves Labour controlling 75 Councils, the Conservatives 45, the Lib Dems 6 and SNP 2. No other party controls a Council. Turnout was a very low 32%.All parties and anyone who believes in democracy should be worried that 68% did not think it worthwhile voting. There was plenty of choice on the ballot papers in many places. If people still did not think there was sufficient choice they could have stood themselves. So why was there such a mass abstention?

There have been two bad periods of boom and bust in the UK in the last thirty years. The first was the 1986-92 boom-bust cycle. The second was the bigger boom-bust of 2005-10.They have several things in common. Both owed much to the influence of European policy on our economy.

399. Could Irish voters say FU to the Merkozy plan to save the €uro? Tory MPs
Ireland is going to have another one of those double referenda on EU treaties. You know the ones. They vote the 'wrong' way the first time and then a few months later vote the 'right' way. The Irish government had hoped to avoid a vote but legal advice from the Attorney General made a vote impossible to duck.Guido is very excited that the Irish will reject Fiscal Union on the basis that they don't want to bailout the bankers. I hope he's right. The greater likelihood is that the €uro will break up in some way before any Fiscal Union treaty is ratified. That, I understand, is the view of Number 11.

400. Europes Supernova Moment - NYTimes.com
HAMBURG, Germany — More or less since its birth, the European Union has been a subject of apocalyptic talk — a permanent crisis mode that has worked beautifully to enhance ever-closer integration.Today, though, the situation is different, and it is serious. Never before have Europeans been more tired and disillusioned with the promises of the Brussels mandarins. In the run-up to the European parliamentary elections in May, the gap between what’s economically necessary and what’s politically justifiable is growing dangerously wide.
