353. Another environmentalist goes sceptic | Roger Helmer MEP
According to the Good Book, “there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth”. And recently, we’ve had several. There was George Monbiot, long-time anti-nuclear campaigner, recently converted to the nuclear cause (although for the bad reason that it cuts CO2 emissions). There was James Lovelock, of the Gaia Hypothesis, who has said “Twenty years ago we knew where the climate was going. Now we don’t”. And now we have Fritz Vahrenholt.

355. Tax incentives and tax avoidance | JohnRedwoodsDiary
As politicians and some in the media work the country into a frenzy against tax dodgers, please spare a thought for all those politicians and commentators arguing for more tax breaks to promote good works, more gr0wth and healthy lifestyles. One man’s tax dodger is another man’s prudent individual taking advantage of strongly recommended tax breaks which have been carefully honed by government. Some people pay less tax because they give generously to charity, some because they are making accelerated savings for retirement so they will not depend on benefits and taxpayers in their old age, some because they are investing in places and causes approved by politicians, some because they are lending their money to the government to spend on public services.

358. If Greenpeace can lie this easily, why should I believe it on any subject? – Telegraph...
Ruth Davis, the senior policy adviser at Greenpeace UK, is quoted in The Guardian about the deferral of a vote in the European Parliament on whether to increase the EU’s emissions reduction target from 20 to 30 per cent. Here is what she says:This vote was postponed after the prime minister personally intervened so that those opposing a higher climate target could no longer count on the support of his party. The politicians backing dirty industries realised they would lose in their bid to scupper moves towards a greener Europe, and they had no option but delay. Her statement is – there is no way of putting this gently – a lie. The reason the vote was delayed is that the voting session had overrun, and some MEPs wanted their lunch. The postponement was approved on a free vote. From where I was sitting, it looked as though just over half the British Tories voted to carry on with the session. Frankly, though, MEPs didn’t vote on Left-Right lines so much as on the basis of whether they were in danger of missing their flights

359. Why the Euro was bound to be trouble
In 2001 I published “Just Say No: 100 arguments against the Euro”. It is timely to revisit some of them, to see why the Euro is causing such trouble to economies like Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain. I pointed out that the Euro was an “Exhange Rate Mechanism you could not get out of”. As so many countries had found it difficult to sustain their currency levels against the DM in the ERM, why did anyone think they could do so from within a single currency? It was locking the door and throwing the key away. That could prove painful if the building caught fire.

360. When did the Left ditch democracy? – Telegraph Blogs
The Left once stood for democracy. In the tradition of the Levellers, the Chartists and the Suffragettes, the British Left once fought to take power away from the elites and dispersed it among the people. The Labour party, when founded by Keir Hardie, stood up for the working man – and woman. No longer. The Left simply does not trust people. They have become not merely undemocratic, but anti democratic. Rather than standing up to elites, the Left actively defends the concentration of political and economic power in the hands of an unaccountable few.

361. How Sir Mervyn King has rewritten history - Telegraph
As confessions go, it was right up there with “the dog ate my homework”.“We should have shouted from the rooftops,” Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, said by way of an apology for the financial crisis and recession the country has endured on his watch. The message was clear. In his version of events, had the Bank been in charge of financial regulation, Britain would not be where it is today. It was powerless, though, because Gordon Brown had stripped it of every tool bar the megaphone.“We did preach about the risks,” he said, seeming to add silently that it wasn’t the Bank’s fault if no one listened. The phoney apology has riled many in the City, including economists and politicians, for its revisionist version of history.

It looks like a thankless task trying to build a new force in UK politics. It is, says English Democrats chairman Robin Tilbrook, but he still thinks it's worth the bother. For more than a decade his party has campaigned for English devolution without ever coming close to making a breakthrough at Westminster.

363. Pension funds 'sitting on billions’ for new building - Telegraph
The Government is missing out on billions of pounds of funding for infrastructure projects because its proposed investment vehicle for pension funds is badly constructed and too small, say experts.British pension funds are ready to deploy up to £120bn of cash for infrastructure investment but say they need a “larger, safer and more investable gilt” than the Government has proposed.“Our analysis indicates that, with the right investment vehicle provided by government, UK pension funds could deploy enough capital into infrastructure to fund HS2 three times over,” said Hugh Nolan, a director of JLT Employee Benefits, which advises UK pension funds.Roger Mattingly, president of the Society of Pension Consultants, agreed. “The Government is not only behind the timeline on its infrastructure aspirations but also behind the times,” he said.

365. Unpalatable truth about food banks the Left finds so hard to swallow: Political football and...
Growing food banks charity the Trussell Trust has been accused by Iain Duncan Smith of 'political messaging' and 'scare-mongering', writes STEVE BIRD.When the organisers of a charity food bank in Coventry received their 10,000th client, they held a ceremony during which the city’s mayor handed a free bag of shopping to a man considered to be the most deserving recipient.Amid a ripple of applause from the crowd of officials, a grinning Darren Harvey stepped forward to receive the emergency supply of food, which was enough to feed him and his family for about three days. The event was intended to highlight the plight of poor people who cannot afford to buy basic foodstuffs, a situation the Left has blamed on welfare cuts and described as a ‘national crisis’. It was filmed by a BBC TV team as part of a documentary called Britain’s Hidden Hungry.

367. Rebalancing the economy
The government’s economic plan rightly said it intended to cut the share of the economy taken by the public sector, and boost the share of manufacturing and production. The aim is to reverse the dramatic move in the other direction under Labour. In their last three full calendar years they presided over more than a 10% fall in production industries output, and a 3.7% increase in public sector real output.
