228. In every area of our public life, the Left is losing the argument – Telegraph Blogs
The facts of life are Conservative – as Labour’s smartest minds now realiseIt is now widely accepted that the years of New Labour government were an almost unalloyed national disaster. Whichever measure you take – moral, social, economic, or the respect in which Britain is held in the world – we went into reverse.Nevertheless, historians may come to judge that these 13 years of Labour misrule served a vital purpose. In retrospect, the Brown/Blair period may be seen as a prolonged experiment which taught the liberal Left that its ideas cannot work, do not work, and have no chance of ever working. It takes time to ruin a country. Four years, the average period between elections, was never going to be enough. But 13 years of Left-wing government has produced a mountain of evidence that the Conservative analysis is better and more truthful.

230. A recession made in Downing Street – Telegraph Blogs
Ed Miliband is right. This is indeed a recession made in Downing Street. It was manufactured painstakingly over a decade, first in Number Eleven and then in Number Ten, by Gordon Brown. The lugubrious Fifer inherited a Chancellor's dream scenario: falling expenditure, rising revenues, strong growth and low inflation. For two years, as promised in Labour's 1997 manifesto, he stuck to Conservative spending plans, and debt was paid off. Then, purposefully and methodically, he started blowing everything away.

232. How much extra revenue do you get from cutting the top tax rate - The Treasury says £4billion
As always the Red Book published at the time of the last budget rests unread by many MPs and commentators. In it is the following interesting figures:Revenue from self assessment Income Tax2011-12 £20.1 billion2012-13 £22.3 billion2013-14 £22.9 billion2014-15 £28.5 billionSelf assessment tax receipts are dominated by receipts from higher rate taxpayers. 2011-13, when they average £21.2 billion a year , is in the period of the 50%tax rate. 2013-15, when they average £25.7 billion, is a period of the lower 45p rate. The figures also include, of course, the impact of the reduced allowances on the tax revenue, which the Treasury forecasts to increase revenues by £490 million in 2014-15, but to have no impact in 2013-14. So if we exclude that effect, the average Self Assessment revenue for the second two year period comes out at £25.45 billion, still £4.25 billion higher per year than at the 50p rate.So according to the government they will average £4.25 billion a year more at the 45p tax rate they are currently averaging at the 50p tax rate.

234. Anti-business anger is threat to UK prosperity - Telegraph
Most people have little love for the market economy: they tolerate it when the going is good, and turn against it in bad times. It is no surprise, therefore, that every recession triggers a backlash against capitalism. But the current bout of anti-business sentiment is far worse than usual, fuelled by the extraordinary length of the downturn. The anger has become so extreme, so one-sided that it is beginning to threaten the very foundations of Britain’s prosperity. I’m not referring to the perfectly legitimate revulsion at the endless stream of disgusting corporate scandals, or to public support for cracking down on rewards for failure. Such sentiments, if channelled properly, will help reform and strengthen the system. White-collar criminals are a disgrace and should be locked up.But we are also witnessing a corrosive development: an emerging consensus that the economy is rigged against ordinary folk, that it has become a zero sum game for the benefit of the rich, that everybody is corrupt. Anybody successful is now viewed with suspicion, as they were prior to Lady Thatcher’s 1980s. With inflation eating into most people’s incomes, and house prices falling, envy and class war, those old British diseases, have made an ugly comeback.

235. Supply-Side Solutions | Roger Helmer MEP
Last week I attended a lunch with EU Commissioner Almunia, responsible for Monetary Affairs. He reminded us how lucky we were to have the strength and stability of the euro during these difficult times, and asked us to contemplate how difficult things would be if Euroland states still had separate currencies. So I contemplated. I contemplated how the Irish Punt would have tracked Sterling and the Dollar, not the Deutschmark, so that the Irish economy, while facing difficulties, would not be looking in to the abyss. The PIGS — Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain — would have exchange rates and monetary policy appropriate to their national circumstances. Italy would not be disadvantaged 30% in terms of unit labour costs versus Germany. Greece’s tourist industry would not have collapsed, and quite possibly the eruptions of street violence in that country would not have occurred.

236. After We're Out | Douglas Carswell | Home
Britain's EU membership is no longer a settled question. The great and the good have finally woken up to what my constituents have longer known; the current terms of our membership are unacceptable. Unless they change pretty dramatically, we will quit. But what would leaving the EU mean? What would things be like outside?According to a coalition of ex-ministers, failed politicians and corporate lobbyists, life outside the EU would be bleak and lonely. For them, no longer able to suckle off the Euro system, perhaps. But what about the rest of us? Life would be better outside the EU.Higher living standards: It is not a coincidence that European countries outside the EU, like Switzerland and Norway, tend to have higher living standards than EU member states.

239. EU Referendum: Re-establish the connection
Whichever way you look at it, £1 billion is a lot of money. That is £1,000,000,000.00, and it is our money – more money than you and I will ever see, or ever dream of earning. It is a sum of money that would buy 150,000 hip replacement operations. It would pay the energy bills for two million pensioners for a full year, or pay the university fees for 600,000 students. More specifically, and of some personal interest, it would pay for 100,000 life-saving heart operations.Yet the fuckwit pictured is going to take that amount of money from us to play around stripping plant food from coal-fired electricity generation and bury it deep in a hole in the ground. This man, therefore, will – indirectly – be responsible for many deaths, lost in "opportunity costs". The money frittered away on this moronic enterprise cannot be spent on life-saving functions. And we do not have the money to spare. If we waste this money, it is not available for anything else. People will die because of this action.
