178. State debt and the Bank of England
Today I want to concentrate on the narrower definition of the nation’s debts – the £1300 billion of official borrowing in the name of the nation that gets measured in the international comparisons, some 80% of GDP. This excludes the public sector pension deficits, the semi nationalised bank liabilities and the private finance guarantees.

180. Eurocrats: 'The more we spend, the more you save!' – Telegraph Blogs
It seems pretty clear that, in the short term at any rate, Eurocrats can't muster the necessary majority for a Financial Transactions Tax. So they've moved to Plan B: an EU-wide stamp duty on share trading.Such a levy already exists in some states, including the United Kingdom. But to propose it is to beg the question. There is an implicit assumption that EU spending must rise in real terms every year – as, indeed, it has for the past half century. But why, at a time when every one of the 27 member states is looking to cut its budget, should the EU, uniquely, be trying to acquire new revenue streams? The EU budget will rise by 15 billion euros over the next two years. According to the OBR, Britain's net contributions will go from £6.9 billion to £9.3 billion over that period; our gross contributions from £11.9 billion to £14.8 billion. This compares to total savings of £8.6 billion across the whole of our domestic spending.Other countries – Ireland, Latvia, Portugal – are making far deeper cuts. They, too, can see their austerity measures being cancelled out by the Brussels budget. Why doesn't the EU look for savings in line with its constituent states?

185. Germany's constitutional court misses the last chance to save Europe from its folly –...
Supporters of the euro keep talking about the need to avoid 'contagion' – which is, when you think about it, a curious metaphor. After all, the usual defence against contagion is quarantine. Yet the EU has done precisely the opposite since the debt crisis began, taking the liabilities of insolvent states and spreading them among countries which, until then, had been healthy. In order to do so, Eurocrats have had to ignore the plain text of the Treaties and to violate the basis on which the single currency was agreed in the first place. To remind you, Article 125 of the Treaties says:The Union shall not be liable for or assume the commitments of central governments, regional, local or other public authorities, other bodies governed by public law, or public…

186. Failed US president Obama is a liar and a hypocrite « Snouts in the Trough
How does failed US president Obama keep a straight face when ordering the British public to vote to remain in the EU?The US is part of NAFTA – the North American Free Trade Agreement. This was signed by Canada, Mexico and the United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. NAFTA came into force on January 1st 1994 and superseded the Canada-United States Free Trade AgreementSo, NAFTA is a kind of North American Common Market just like we used to have in Europe before the political elites changed the European Common Market into their grand political project – the European Union.

187. Now Labour is dragged into bank rate scandal as leaked documents show Brown's baroness proposed scheme to drive down rates | Daily Mail
Leaked documents last night brought the interest-rate fixing scandal that has shaken Britain's banks closer to the heart of the last Labour government. They suggest that Baroness Vadera, a former Cabinet Office minister and one of Labour's chief economic advisers, told officials in 2008 that bringing down the rates which determine how much banks lend to each other would be 'a major contribution to the stability of the banking system and to the health of the economy'.A paper prepared by the peer with former colleagues at the bank UBS was headed 'Reducing Libor' – the name for the inter-bank lending rate at the centre of the scandal.

188. Europe's blithering idiots and their flim-flam treaty – Telegraph Blogs
What remarkable petulance and stupidity. The leaders of France and Germany have more or less bulldozed Britain out of the European Union for the sake of a treaty that offers absolutely no solution to the crisis at hand, or indeed any future crisis. It is EU institutional chair shuffling at its worst, with venom for good measure.

189. It would cost me my job, but here's my blueprint for how Britain can escape the EU | Mail...
What would happen if we left the EU?Michael Gove is the most senior minister so far to suggest that the Prime Minister’s declared policy — to recover powers from the union while remaining a member — can’t succeed without a credible threat of withdrawal. The Education Secretary is absolutely right: there is no chance of our own EU officials seeking the meaningful repatriation of powers, let alone the EU granting it, unless everyone understands that we will otherwise leave. This isn’t something we can bluff about. We have to be prepared to walk away if our minimum terms are not met.So what would happen if we reached that position? What if the EU refused to meet our bottom line? What if we were left with no alternative but to pull out?
